The Man From China Episode Fourteen

The village people did not know what hit them. They did not know where the gun men came from or who sent them. They also did not expect the attack and they were not prepared to fight back. Even if they were prepared, they didn't have the kind of weapons the gun men had. There was no way they were going to defend themselves. It was therefore a total disaster. Many people "kpai" after the attack. Villagers clustered in groups to cry. Men were ashamed that they could not do anything to defend their women and children. It was only the next day that people started to try to understand what happened based on what they had heard from the attackers.

After the village king and the crown prince were killed, the gun men imposed a new king on the village. The new king imposed heavy taxes on everyone. People lost their farmlands and crops to the gun men as they seized everything of value belonging to the villagers. Those who refused to pay taxes were killed. People started living in fear of death. Anything could happen to anyone at any moment. It was a hellish experience for everyone in the village. Nobody expected that such a thing would ever happen in the village. Elders who survived it said they have never experienced such a thing in the past.

Apart from people who died, there were people who were taken prisoners. They were dumped in the numerous dungeons in the palace. In the dungeon, the prisoners met Chin Cheng who was originally kept there by the crown prince who had been killed by the armed invaders. He was surprised to see a large number of people who were being brought to the prison every morning, afternoon and night. He wondered what was going on in the village. He had heard gunshots, but didn't know why or what was happening. It was when he asked some of the prisoners that they explained what was happening to him.

"The village is under attack. You may have heard gunshots. Those gunshots were coming from the invaders and they were killing our people like flies. We did not do them anything and we don't even know where these people come from. But we are hearing stories and rumours. All of a sudden, we started hearing gunshots from all directions. Those who tried to run could not make it. We don't even know why they are attacking us. They have killed our king and our crown prince. There is no one to help us. The village is finished and our linage is in trouble. These people want to wipe us out. I pray the gods send us a helper." One of the men locked up in the prison tells Chin Cheng. He was sobbing, trying hard to control his tears.

"I lost my wife and children. My wife was also pregnant but they did not listen to me when I was begging them to spare her. I lost my four children and my pregnant wife. I just managed to run away when they tried to attack me too. But they still ended up catching me. They brought me here as a prisoner. I don't know what they want to use us to do, but I'm pretty sure we are not going to last long. They will soon come and kill us because I heard one of them saying we are just like dead people walking. I'm suspecting they might kill us tomorrow if their king orders it." The man lamented. He looked like something the cat just dragged in. He has passed through a lot since the previous 24 hours.

"Those people killed every living thing in my compound. I was just so fortunate to survive. They even killed my hunting dog. They went to my barn and packed all my yams. They also

stole all my chickens and packed the eggs. Yesterday was a very sorrowful day for me. I know I'm not alone in this. A lot of the villagers here experienced the same thing. It was a total disaster. Some families were completely wiped out. I mean no one is remaining to carry on the family. It means that the linage is closed. Some people were able to run away to neighbouring villages but those who escaped were very few. This kind of thing has never happened. Our people here are largely very peaceful and I don't know who we offended." The man continued talking. Chin Cheng kept listening to him with pain in his heart.

"But the people who attacked the village, do you understand their language? What were they saying when they were attacking you? I mean, did they say anything at all? Did they say something we can use to determine who they are? Did you understand the language they spoke? Because clearly, they were talking to you when they were attacking you right? Did they say anything of value?" Chin Cheng asked.

"They were not speaking our language. They didn't speak much of English. They were speaking in their language which I don't understand. But one of them who spoke English

You know our crown prince who is now dead was a lover of women. He was a womanizer. These people are from a faraway village. Yet, our crown prince went there to sleep with their king's wife. I also heard them saying in the process of sleeping with her, the woman died because it is against their tradition for a married woman to allow another man to touch her. Our crown prince was able to escape but they tracked him down to our village. So, essentially, they are here to carry out revenge." The man said.

"But if it was only the crown prince who touched their king's wife, why are they killing innocent people in the village? That is cruel and I will not allow them to continue. We have to organize ourselves and fight back. We can't allow them to wipe out the whole village. We must be strong, and attack them the way they are attacking us." Chin Cheng said.

"I have a plan. All of you must listen to me carefully so that we will defeat these people." Chin Cheng said. He had gathered everyone in the prison and they were preparing to escape so that they can fight back. Chin Cheng agreed to lead the battle.

After a night of planning, they were able to break the wall of the prison and all of them escaped from the back of the palace.

The villagers told Ching Cheng that the only place the will stay and the attackers will not catch them was a place called the evil forest. He agreed and followed them there. When they got there, they started a preparation to launch a counter attack.

"Now, I'm going to train you people on how to fight. We will attack the village and take it back.

"Chin Cheng said.
