The Twin Pregnancy Episode Five

When she woke up that morning, Nene felt weak physically, though her spirit was strong. She was feeling extremely dizzy but she was not scared. She just figured out it must be because of the stress she has gone through for the past 24 hours.

"I think I need to go to the hospital. I have not gone for antenatal visit since I discovered my pregnancy. From what I was taught in my secondary school biology, a pregnant woman is supposed to be seeing the doctor often so that If there is any issue, it will be discovered and attended to on time before it affects the mother and her baby." Nene said to herself as she stood up from the bed and started preparing to visit the hospital. She took her bath, wore her clothes and started going. She knew a government hospital in the area and she knows it's cheaper than the privately owned ones.

"Where is your husband?" The nurse attending to Nene asked her as soon as she settled down in the maternity section of the hospital.

"I'm not married. I got pregnant out of wedlock and the man who got me pregnant denied it. I decided to carry my own cross without shame. So, I came here on my own." Nene tells the nurse. Her willingness to open up about her situation and her refusal to be worried and ashamed impressed the nurse.

"What about your parents? And how old are you?" The nurse asked.

"I'm 19. And my mother lives in the village. I was living with my aunt as a househelp, but she chased me away after I told her I was pregnant." Nene informed the nurse.

"The antenatal registration fee is N10,000. How are you going to pay?" The nurse asked.

"Don't worry, I have money." Nene said as she brought out money from her bag and made the payment.

The nurse attended to her with happiness. She scanned Nene's belly to see if the baby was well positioned. But as she was looking at the computer screen, she saw that there were two children in Nene's womb.

"Wow! You are going to have twins! You are such a blessed woman. Congratulations to you Nene." The nurse said.

"Really? My God!" Nene shouted. She wanted to stand up from the hospital bed and dance but the nurse held her. She was so excited such that she started crying.

"Imagine if I had not insisted on keeping this pregnancy, the two babies would have gone. I'm happy I took the difficult decision to keep the babies against all odds. Now, I'm going to be the mother of twins. What a blessing!" Nene shouted.

After the scanning, she joined other pregnant women where they were given all the advice they need on how to stay healthy while pregnant. Soon, she was on her way home after she was told to return to the hospital every first week of a new month. Nene was happy that she had gone to the hospital.

When she returned to the hotel, she picked her ATM card and went out into the town.

"It's time to get an appointment for myself. I cannot continue to stay in a hotel room. It's too expensive. Nene said. When she came outside.

expensive. Nene said. When she came outside, she was able to find an estate agent who helped her look for an apartment that fits her budget. When she was taken to the apartment, she liked it because it is close to the roadside.

"I will be doing my business in front of the house if I don't want to go out." Nene said. The cost of the one room apartment was N65,000. She paid for it. She got water and washed it that same day. She also went out and bought a small bed and cooking utensils for herself and then moved her bags from the hotel into the apartment. When she was done, the time was already 6pm. She decided to rest after cooking her first food and eating in the apartment.

"I'm happy now. At least, I have a roof under my head. Life has now started. I'm not worried about the future. The future is great and holds a lot of positive promises for me. All I need is to be strong and focused. In the future when I look back, I will be proud of the decisions I took this year. Getting pregnant out of wedlock was a huge mistake, but I will not allow it to weigh me down. I will fight and win. Life is a battle and whoever is alive can still win the game." Nene said to herself as she fell asleep.

The next day, she went to the market to buy groundnuts for sell. Her money was remaining close to N100,000 after all the expenses and she decided to put half of it in business.

She saw that her apartment is very close to the street road where many people usually pass. She decided to buy provisions and other basic things she knows that people usually needs at home. When she came back, she looked for a carpenter to construct a little shop attached to her apartment. It looked nice. She displayed the goods she bought on the small wooden shop.

"I now have a shop. I know it's small, but I can grow from here. Because of the pregnancy, I don't want to be hawking again. I don't want anything to happen to me or the babies. I just pray that people will patronize me." Nene said as she brought out a small stool and sat in front of the shop.

To her surprise, people came to buy from her. In fact, the two packets of Maggi she bought finished that night. She also finished selling one carton of Indomie and two crates of eggs. Nene discovered that the area was far from the main market and there were no shops around her neighborhood. A lot of people were happy that neighborhood. A lot of people were happy that someone was finally selling provisions to them.

"I think today was very successful. Tomorrow, I will go to the market and buy more goods." Nene said as she slept off later in the night.
