The Breadwinner Episode Seven
When John entered the living room, he came face to face with his wife and her boyfriend. Mirram was holding the man tightly in a romantic way. They had finished having fun in the bedroom. John was not able to punish them the way he wanted because of the distraction caused by his landlord who came to ask for rent during what John considered was a wrong time. He was so sad and heartbroken when he saw Miriam, his wife holding another man romantically in his presence.
"Who was shouting outside? It's as if you were talking to someone. Who might that be? Why was the person shouting like a dog?" Miriam asked her husband in a manner that suggested she had no intimate relationship with him. John was startled at just how far his wife was prepared to go to ridicule him in the presence of his fellow man.
For some few seconds, John could not respond to his wife. He was busy sizing up the man and checking to see if he could be able to take him in a battle. One part of his mind was telling him to pounce on the man and tear him apart, the other part told him to blow him in the mouth and remove all his teeth. However, the more rational part of him told him to hold on, calm down and look for another way to retaliate.
"John! Did you not hear me? I said who was shouting outside like a dog? His voice resembleed that of the landlord. Is he okay and why was he shouting at our doorstep this evening? What is going on?" Miriam asked her husband again, this time with serious emphasis on each word. It was like John came back to his senses and decided to respond to his wife in a respectful way, talking to her as if he was a houseboy.
"It's the landlord's dog.
Although the landlord was here but he wasn't the one shouting. He brought his dog for me to help him castrate." John responded.
"John! You castrate dogs? How come I never knew this aspect of you? You mean you can successfully castrate dogs?" Miriam asked her husband with surprise written all over her face. She was left in shock because she never knew her husband could do such.
"Yes of Castration is one of the best skills | have. I learned it from my father who was the best dog castrator in our village. So the landlord said I should help him and I couldn't say no. I did it perfectly. That's why the dog was shouting." John responded to his wife who was bewildered. The man who just finished browsing her website was also startled by what John was saying. The man decided to ask questions because he became confused at some points.
"Wait Miriam! You said this man here is your brother and not your husband. That means you shared the same parents. But how come you didn't know he could castrate dogs? How come you never knew your father was a famous dog castrator? What's going on here? Can you please tell me who this man really is?" Miriam's boyfriend asked, drawing close to John as if he wanted to attack him.
"Yes, she is right. She is my sister. You know she didn't really grow up with us. She was given to another relative to raise, that's why she doesn't know many things in our family, including the fact that I'm a good castrator." Said John with a gentle smile which softened the tensed moment. He ironically defended his wife.
"Oh! I see! So tell me, why would the landlord want to castrate his dog? Why not leave the innocent dog to enjoy himself with other female dogs out there in the neighborhood?" Miriam's boyfriend asked John on a lighter note.
"The thing is that the dog wanted to put him in
trouble. Previously, he had no intention of
castrating the dog. In fact, some neighbors used
to come and borrow the dog to get their get their
own dogs pregnant. But problem started when
the landlord's dog started sneaking into the
house of an army general who owns a female
dog. The landlord's dog got the soldier's dog
pregnant. There was a serious problem. So the
landlord decided to castrate his dog to end the
whole matter." John lied.
Miriam's boyfriend was fascinated by the story. He laughed out loud. Miriam was bewildered that her husband was successfully catching cruise with her boyfriend.
"Please, let's go. It's getting dark. It's time for you to go." Miriam said to the intruder. But the man insisted he wanted to have more conversation with John, noting that John was fun to be with.
"Tell me more of other castration jobs you have done in your career as a professional castrator." Miriam's boyfriend said to John.
"The most interesting one was when I did it on a man. The man was browsing one of my father's wives right inside his own room. My father caught the man. The man's browsing system was castrated so that it will never bring network again. He would never brows another man's wife again. I was the one who did it." John said. Mirram's boyfriend was shocked and he started moving away from John. He was filled with guilt knowing what he did with Miriam moments ago. The worse was how John was looking at him.
"What? That was gross!" The man said to John with fear.
"Yes. I can still do that type of job today. I mean , right now. I can do it to you." John said, drawing close to the man in a way that suggested he wanted to launch an attack on him and pin him to the ground. But Miriam 's quick intervention saved the day.
"Have you paid the landlord? Did you pay the rent with the money I gave you?" Mirram asked John. The question did not completely ease the tensed moment but John used it to his advantage.
"The landlord said he has increased the house rent from N500,000 to N2 million. I'm wondering if your boyfriend here can help us bring the remaining N1.5 million so we can pay our rent. After all, he doesn't want his browsing system castrated for sleeping with another man's wife. Surely he can help us." John said threateningly. He was still standing face to face with Miriam's boyfriend as if he would pounce on him any moment. He had his hand in his pocket as if he was bringing out razor blade for the castration. Miriam's boyfriend was shivering.
"What? How dare you ask my guest for such a huge amount of money? Are you threatening him? Even if he was going to help us, I will be the one to ask, not you. You are just my brother, not my husband and you have no right to ask my man for favour." Miriam said.
"Shut up Miriam." The man shouted at her. He has since realized that John was Miriam's husband and knew he was in trouble.
"Put your account number here." The man said,
giving his phone to John while shivering.
"Good. I have seen the alert." John said after a while. He stepped back from where the man was. The man practically ran out of the house in fear. Miriam followed him.
"You lied to me. You are still married. That's your husband." The man said to Miriam once they were outside.
"I'm sorry please. Forgive me. Don't break up with me. Miriam pleaded.
"Forgive you? You think I will ever touch you again? You are another man's wife. I don't want my browsing system to be castrated by your husband." The man said to Miriam as he entered his car and drove away with speed.
"John, you will have me to contend with. John you will pay for this." Miriam said as she rushed back into the house to face John.
