The Breadwinner Episode Six
When John saw his landlord standing at the doorstep, he froze in fear and shock. He did not expect to see him at that crucial moment when he was about to attack the man who entered his house and was browsing his wife's website right inside his own room. He still had the cup of blended pepper in his hand.
John had already imagined how he was going to pour the pepper on his wife and the man who was with her in the bedroom. The arrival of the landlord at that moment presented a serious challenge. John was just standing there speechless and not knowing what to tell the man who had already made up his mind to chase them away from his house.
"Didn't you hear what I said? I said you should leave my house. Leave my house with immediate effect. Enter there right now, pack your family and property and disappear because I don't want to see you people here again. Shameless man who can't pay a common house rent. Are you still a man? I heard that it is even your wife that is feeding you, fuelling your car and paying your children 's school fees. Are you not ashamed? Please, move away from this apartment this moment because I didn't build it for poor people like you. "The landlord said mockingly. John was so sad.
"For how many months now, you have been giving me excuses, telling me I will pay today, I will pay tomorrow. Now, I have run out of patience and I will not listen to any more pleas. Why are you just standing there and mopping at me like ice fish? Do you think I'm joking. I said you should pack your children and take your wretched selves out of this compound before I call the police to deal with you." The landlord continued ranting endlessly. As he was talking, he was using his walking stick to illustrate his points.
"I know you are preparing to beg me. Don't even start because I will not listen to you. You are leaving this apartment today. I will rent it out to a more serious man. I will rent it out to someone capable of paying, not a poor soul like you. Don't even try to beg me because you are going to make me more angry. I'm talking and you are Just standing there like a deaf and dumb. Move it and start packing out. The landlord shouted. All these while, he has been the only one talking and John listened to him with anger in his heart.
"I'm not going to beg you. And I'm not leaving this apartment. I will stay here until when I'm able to pay you. And there's absolutely nothing you can do about it." John said when he finally opened his mouth to talk. He was even surprised at his own voice because it sounded so firm and strong that the landlord even wondered if John was actually talking to him or another person.
"You said what? Is it me you are talking to or
there is another person inside the room? You
know when I was inside my room, I saw a man
walking into your room with your wife. I'm sure
he is inside right now browsing your wife's
website. I'm sure he is the one you are talking to,
not me the honourable landlord. Because if it is
me you are talking to, you will regret raising
your voice at me." The landlord said. John was
so angry after the landlord mentioned his wife
and the man in his bedroom.
John could no longer continue to take the insults. He still had the pepper he prepared to use and attack his wife and her boyfriend. But it appears the landlord wanted to be the recipient of the impending storm. John positions the pepper very well. All this while, he has been hiding it behind his back. But as the landlord continued to insult him, he prepared to pour it on him.
"Look at the rat that has not paid rent talking to me as if he contributed money to build my house for me. Let me advice you, a man that cannot pay rent for for his family has no right to talk when real men are talking. That is is why another man is taking your wife from you. Shameless husband that has turned into house wife. Cooking and mopping the house when his wife gallivants with other men." The landlord continued talking but John had reached his boiling point. His anger could no longer be controlled.
He came out of the house and closed the door, drew closer to the landlord and ordered him to leave the scene.
"Leave my house." John ordered.
"What? Your house? A house that you have not paid rent for one year? Yare ordering me out of my own house? Are you mad?" The landlord
asked, pointing his walking stick at John threateningly.
"If you don't leave this place now, I will show you madness. I'm warning you to leave." John said.
"I'm going nowhere. This is my house and you have no right to chase me." The landlord continued to stand his ground.
Within a second, John threw the cup of pepper into his face and the content spilled into the landlord's eyes and his entire body. The landlord started shouting and running blindly around the compound. He hit his body against the fence as he tried to locate the entrance to his own apartment. When he had disappeared from the scene, John returned into the room to face his wife and her boyfriend.
