Constantine 2: Keanu Reeves & Director Talk Release Status, Returning Characters

Actor Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence have recently shared an update regarding the current status of Constantine 2, the sequel to the cult classic superhero horror film. The first part hit theaters across the United States on February 18, 2005, and had a successful run at the box office. The movie had a massive star cast featuring Reeves as John Constantine, Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, Peter Stormare as Lucifer, and Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson.

Francis Lawrence on why Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves has taken so long

Keanu Reeves and Francis Lawrence recently sat down for a virtual interaction with Josh Horowitz to celebrate 20 years of Constantine.

While the conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast continued with the duo sharing the behind-the-scenes of the movie, the host urged them to share some updates on the sequel. At the 42:50 mark, Horowitz asked whether there was a script for Constantine 2 that had been shortlisted by Reeves and Lawrence.

The director then revealed that they have permission to develop the sequel from DC higher-ups. He shared, “Akiva (Goldsman) is writing and Keanu and Akiva and I have been collaborating and I think we have some really, really great ideas that we’re super super excited about.” Lawrence stated that they are “pretty close” to having something “workable” concerning Constantine 2. He also added that Constantine 2 would take place outside James Gunn’s DC Universe and would be a part of the Elseworlds.

Furthermore, the director opened up about the reason behind the sequel taking 20 years to become a reality. Francis Lawrence said, “We have run into a lot of hurdles primarily with regime changes at the studio, and that means both Warner Brothers and DC.” He disclosed that due to the changes in the top management, the Dark characters, including John Constantine “have kind of bounced around.”

Keanu Reeves, on the other hand, conveyed, “What Akiva and Francis have come up with and the ideas, I’m aching to play this guy.” Moreover, Lawrence denied giving any teasers regarding the sequel but disclosed that “there’s definitely room for some recurring characters.”
