The Brutalist Director Says He Made ‘Zero’ Money From the Oscar-Nominated Movie

Brady Corbet, director of 2024’s The Brutalist, recently shed light on the financial aspect of filmmaking, revealing that although his latest movie bagged several nods in the award season, it failed to fetch him any income. The period drama follows the journey of Adrien Brody’s László Tóth, a Hungarian architect who, along with his wife, decides to leave behind a war-torn Europe in an attempt to find his footing in the United States.

The film has so far secured 10 Oscar nominations, while also making waves at the Golden Globe and BAFTA. However, Corbet points out that it does not involve the kind of income that people would generally associate with the process.

Brady Corbet says he had ‘zero’ income from The Brutalist

In a recent discussion, Corbet opened up about the money he has pocketed from the award-winning historical epic The Brutalist.

During his appearance on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Corbet confirmed that he did not earn anything from his recent directorial venture. “Actually, zero. We had to just sort of live off of a paycheck from three years ago,” he stated. “Our film premiered in September. So I’ve been doing this for six months. And had zero income because I don’t have any time to go to work,” The Brutalist director added. (via People)

Despite being in contention for a hoard of Oscar categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and more, The Brutalist has surprisingly failed to bring any income to its director. However, per Corbet, this is a widespread phenomenon and continues to trouble other Oscar-nominated filmmakers as well. “I’ve spoken to many filmmakers that have the films that are nominated this year that can’t pay their rent. I mean, that’s a real thing,” he added.

The movie released in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2024.
