Green Day Comedy Movie New Years Rev Sets Cast, Band Issues Statement

Live Nation Productions produces music movies like A Star is Born, the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream, and Love, Lizzo. Coming next from the musical production company is a new comedy that’ll hit the heartstrings of Green Day fans. The punk-rock band is developing with Live Nation Productions New Years Rev with its set cast and a statement issued by the band itself.

Green Day broke through in 1994 with their major-label debut Dookie and revived their popularity with American Idiot. With five Grammys, a Broadway stage adaptation of American Idiot, and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the best-selling band’s next move is hitting the big screen. According to Variety, Live Nation Productions and Green Day are developing a comedy film based on the band’s tour days.

Titled New Years Rev, three friends journey to L.A. with the mistaken belief they’re opening for Green Day. Meanwhile, the “rowdy and mischievous” trio will be played by The Black Phone’s Mason Thames, Outbreak’s Kylr Coffman, and The Goldfinch’s Ryan Foust. We also got The Office’s Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey as part of the cast with production underway in Oklahoma.

What did Green Day say about New Years Rev?

With the upcoming comedy road trip movie being in full swing, Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong issued a statement:

“Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of,” said Armstrong. “But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

It sounds like the ultimate coming-of-age story that aspiring rockers will be able to relate to. Live Nation Productions’ head of film and TV, Ryan Kroft, also told Variety what else to look forward to:

“With incredible guidance from Green Day, ‘New Years Rev’ tells the story of young artists chasing a dream — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fueling their journey. Brought to life by an incredible cast, it’s a tribute to the magic of live music.”
