Episode 7: The Black Box
Rose sat on the wooden floor for a very long time. The clock on the wall kept ticking. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Every second felt like a very long time. Around her were all the things she had taken out of the black box. There were the photos of the beautiful woman in the white dress. There were the many letters written in David’s neat and tidy handwriting. There were the old theater tickets and the dried flowers that turned to dust when she touched them. These things were like ghosts. They were not real people, but they felt like they were in the room with her. They were the ghosts of David’s secret life.
Rose felt a lot of different things as she sat there in the dark. At first, she felt very angry. She wanted to scream. She wanted to break things. She thought about how David had lied to her for ten years. Every time he said he loved her, was he thinking about Sarah? Every time he brought her flowers on Friday, was he just feeling guilty for his secret? The anger was like a hot fire in her chest. But as the hours went by, the fire started to go out. The anger turned into a very deep sadness. It was the kind of sadness that makes your whole body feel heavy. It was the kind of sadness that makes you want to close your eyes and never open them again. She felt like her heart was breaking into a million little pieces. Her happy home did not feel happy anymore. It felt like a place full of shadows and lies.
She looked down at the small scrap of paper in her hand. It was the paper with the phone number and the address. It was the most important thing she had found in the box. It was the key to everything. Rose wondered if she should call the number. She was very scared. She asked herself many questions. What if the woman on the other end was mean? What if she started to yell at Rose? What if she did not even know who Rose was? Rose did not want to cause any trouble. She was a kind person. She did not like to make people sad. But she knew she could not go on like this. She had to find out the truth. She had to know who David really was. She knew the truth would hurt, but she had to do it for herself.
Rose stood up slowly. Her knees were very sore from sitting on the floor for so long. She walked out of the dark bedroom and went into the kitchen. The kitchen was very quiet and very cold. She reached out and touched the phone. It felt hard and heavy. Her fingers hovered over the buttons. She felt like the phone was a dangerous thing. She took a deep breath to find her courage. She told herself to stay strong. She started to dial the number on the paper. She pushed the buttons slowly. Each beep sounded very loud in the quiet house. When she was done, she put the phone to her ear and waited.
She listened to the long ringing sound on the other end. Ring. Ring. Ring. It felt like the phone was ringing in another world. Rose almost hung up. Her heart was beating so fast it felt like a bird trapped in a cage. She wanted to run back to her bed and hide under the soft covers. She wanted to pretend the black box was still locked and hidden. But she did not hang up. She stayed right there in the kitchen. She waited and waited. Finally, someone picked up the phone. A woman’s voice answered. "Hello?" the woman said.
The woman sounded very tired. She sounded like someone who had not slept in a very long time. Rose felt a little bit sorry for her just by hearing her voice. Rose took a shaky breath. Her voice was very small and quiet. She asked, "Is this Sarah?" There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Rose could hear the sound of the woman breathing. It was a very soft sound. The silence lasted for a long time. It felt like a whole minute, but it was probably only a few seconds. Then, the woman replied. Her voice was very cautious and careful. She said, "Yes. Who is this?"
Rose did not know what to say. She felt like her tongue was stuck to the top of her mouth. She tried to speak, but no words came out at first. She took another breath. She said, "I am calling about David." As soon as she said his name, she heard a sound from the other side. It was a sharp gasp. It was the sound someone makes when they are very surprised or very hurt. It sounded like the woman had been shocked. Then, Sarah began to cry. It was a very sad sound. It was the sound of someone who had been holding in their tears for many years.
Sarah began to speak through her tears. she said, "David? Do you know where he is? Please tell me you know where he is!" She was sobbing now. Her voice was shaking with emotion. She told Rose a story that made Rose feel very cold. She said that David was her husband. She said that many years ago, he just disappeared. One day he was there, and the next day he was gone. He did not say goodbye to her. He did not leave a note to explain why. He just vanished into thin air. Sarah said she had been looking for him every single day since he left. She had called the police and asked everyone they knew. She had traveled to many different cities to find him. She had never given up hope, but she had started to think he was gone forever. She thought maybe something bad had happened to him.
Rose felt a chill go down her spine. It was a very scary feeling. It felt like ice water was moving through her bones. She realized something terrible in that moment. David did not just have a secret wife. He had run away from his whole life. He had left Sarah all alone to worry and cry for years. And all that time, he was living a new life with Rose. He was living just a few towns away from his old home. He had changed his life and started over. He had built a new home and a new world. He had acted like he was the kindest man in the world to Rose. But he was actually a man who had abandoned his family. He had let his first wife think he was dead or lost forever.
Rose looked around her kitchen. She looked at the table where they ate breakfast every morning. She looked at the chair where David always sat. She felt like she was living in a house full of lies. The man she loved was a man who could just walk away from people when he wanted to. He was a man who could watch a woman suffer for years and not say a word to help her. Rose felt very sick. She felt like she wanted to cry too. She thought about how David always held her hand in the park. Was he holding her hand so tightly because he was afraid she would find out? She thought about the flowers he brought every Friday. Were the flowers just a way to make himself feel like a good person?
Sarah was still talking on the phone. She was asking Rose many questions. "Where is he? Is he okay? Why has he not called me in all these years?" Rose did not know how to answer her. How could she tell this woman that David was her husband now? How could she tell her that they had been living happily for ten years? It felt like a very cruel thing to say to someone who was so sad. Rose felt like she was a part of David’s big lie now. She felt like she was helping him hurt Sarah just by being his wife. She wanted to help Sarah, but she did not know how to fix such a big problem. She felt very lost and very confused.
Rose realized that the black box was not just a box of old memories. It was a box of secrets that were very dark and heavy. It was a box that held the truth about a man who was not who he said he was. David was a runaway. He was a man who escaped his problems instead of fixing them. He was a man who left a trail of broken hearts behind him. Rose thought about her own life and her own future. Was David going to run away from her too? If things got hard or if they had a fight, would he just disappear one day? Would she be the one crying on the phone in ten years? The thought made her feel very afraid of the man she had loved for so long.
She looked at the clock again. It was very late into the night now. The sun would be coming up soon. But the house still felt very dark. It felt like the darkness was inside the walls and under the floors. Rose realized that you can never truly know someone, even if you live with them for a long time. You can think they are perfect, but they might be hiding a giant secret. Everyone has a secret, but some secrets are too big for one house. David’s secret was like a giant mountain that was falling on top of Rose. She felt like she was being crushed by the weight of the truth.
Sarah was still crying on the other end of the line. She said, "Please, I just want to see him. I just want to know why he left me." Rose felt a tear fall from her own eye. She felt a connection to this woman she had never met. They both loved the same man. They both were hurt by the same man’s lies. They were like two sisters who shared a very sad and lonely story. Rose knew that she had to do something. She could not just hang up the phone and pretend she did not know the truth. She had to face the situation. She had to decide what her next move would be.
The chill in her spine would not go away. She thought about David on his work trip. He would be coming home in just a few days. He would walk through the front door with a big smile on his face. He would try to hug her and tell her how much he missed her. He would act like everything was normal and happy. But nothing would ever be normal again for Rose. The black box was open and it could never be closed. The secret was out in the world. The woman on the phone was real and she was waiting for answers. David’s old life was calling to him from the past. Rose knew that the next few days would be the hardest days of her entire life. She was standing in the middle of a big storm, and the storm was only just beginning.
She told Sarah, "I will call you back. I promise." She hung up the phone very slowly and carefully. She sat down at the kitchen table and put her head in her hands. The house was still very quiet. But in her mind, there was a lot of loud noise. There were the sounds of Sarah crying. There were the sounds of the ticking clock. And there was the sound of the secret, whispering to her in the dark kitchen. Rose knew that the truth was a very powerful thing. It could build a happy life, but it could also destroy a life in one second. And right now, the truth was destroying her whole world.
She thought about the lesson she was learning. The lesson was that you should always be honest with the people you love. You should never run away from your problems or your past. Because your problems will always find you in the end. They might take ten years to find you. They might hide in a small black box under a bed. But one day, the box will open. And then, you will have to answer for all the things you did. Rose was ready to get those answers from David. She was ready to face him. She was ready to find out the rest of the story. The suspense was very high. The air was very cold. And the end of the mystery was coming very soon.
Rose looked out the window. The sky was starting to turn a light gray color. The morning was finally coming. But for Rose, it felt like the longest night of her life was not over yet. She had to stay strong for herself. She had to be brave for Sarah too. She had to find out why David did what he did. She had to know if their love was real or if she was just a part of his plan to hide. The black box was empty on the floor, but her life was now full of big questions. And the answers to those questions were going to change everything forever.
David did not just have a secret wife; he ran away and let her think he was gone forever. Do you think there is ever a good reason to disappear like that?
How do you think Rose feels now that she knows she is married to a man who abandoned his first family?
If you were Sarah, would you want to see David again after all these years, or would you be too angry to talk to him?
What do you think David’s face will look like when he walks into the house and sees the black box is open on the floor?
