Episode 4: The Black Box

Rose stayed on her knees for a long time. She did not move a single muscle. She was like a statue made of stone. The only thing moving in the room was the moonlight. The moon was very bright that night. It looked like a big silver coin in the dark sky. The light from the moon came through the window. It crawled slowly across the wooden floorboards. It moved inch by inch. First, it touched the edge of the rug. Then, it touched the leg of the big soft bed. Finally, it touched Rose's hands. Rose was staring at the black box. Her eyes were wide and she did not even blink. The box looked different in the moonlight. It looked even more mysterious than it did in the daytime. It sat there in the middle of the shadows. It was quiet and very still. It felt like the box was waiting for her to make a move.

As she sat there, Rose remembered David’s voice. She could hear him in her head as if he were standing right next to her. She remembered the very first day they moved into their cozy home. She remembered how happy they were. She remembered the serious look on his face when he showed her the box. He had told her to never, ever look inside. His voice had been very soft but very firm. Rose felt a big wave of guilt wash over her. It was a cold and heavy feeling in her chest. She felt like she was doing something very wrong. She felt like she was being a bad wife. David was so kind to her. He brought her flowers. He held her hand. He loved her with all his heart. Was she about to throw all of that away just because she was curious? The guilt made her want to stand up and run out of the room. It made her want to throw the keys out of the window.

But then, another thought came into her mind. She thought about their marriage. She thought about how much she loved David. She believed that when two people love each other, they should share everything. They should have no secrets. If they were truly happy, why was there a locked box in the house? Why was there a part of David’s life that she was not allowed to see? Rose started to think that maybe the secret was not a bad thing. She began to change her mind. She told herself that maybe David was just being shy. Or maybe he was waiting for the perfect time to show her. A small and hopeful smile came to her face. She started to imagine good things. She thought to herself that maybe there was a wonderful surprise for her inside the box.

Rose closed her eyes and dreamed for a moment. Maybe the box was full of beautiful jewelry. Maybe there was a gold necklace with a red heart on it. Or maybe there were sparkling diamond earrings that David had been saving for a special day. She also thought about letters. David was a very sweet man. Maybe the box was full of letters he had written to her over the last ten years. Maybe each letter told her how much he loved her and why he was so happy to be her husband. This thought made Rose feel much better. It made her feel like she was not doing something bad. She felt like she was just opening a gift a little bit early. She told herself that David would not be truly angry if the box was full of love. She felt her courage growing. She felt like she was ready to see the truth.

Rose took a very deep breath. She needed to find her courage. Her heart was beating very fast, but she did not let it stop her. She reached her hand under the big soft bed. She felt the cold wood of the box. She gripped the sides of the box with her fingers. She pulled it out slowly. The box was much heavier than it looked. It felt like it was full of stones or heavy metal. As she pulled it into the middle of the room, the box made a loud scraping sound. It was the sound of wood rubbing against wood. In the quiet house, the noise sounded like a clap of thunder. Rose froze for a second. She was afraid that someone might hear her, even though she was all alone. She waited and listened. The house stayed silent. The scraping sound faded away, but it stayed in her mind. Now, the box was out in the open. It was not hiding in the shadows anymore.

Rose looked at the box. Now that it was in the light, she could see the silver lock very clearly. It was a beautiful lock. It was shaped like a small heart. She reached into her pocket and pulled out David’s ring of keys. She found the tiny silver key. She held it up to the moonlight. The key was very small and very shiny. It looked like it was made for a toy, but Rose knew it was very real. She held the key between her thumb and her finger. Her hand started to tremble. She could not keep her arm still. She was so nervous that her whole body felt like it was shaking. She was terrified of what she might find, but she was also more curious than she had ever been in her entire life. She felt like she was about to open a door to a new world.

She moved her hand toward the box. The silver key moved closer and closer to the lock. She had to use both hands to keep the key steady. She managed to slide the metal into the keyhole. It fit perfectly. There was no struggle. The key went in as if it belonged there. Rose felt a shiver go down her back. She felt like the box was finally happy to be opened. She took one last deep breath. She thought about David one more time. She thought about the ten years of happiness they had shared. She thought about the promise she was about to break. But the curiosity was too strong. It was like a giant wave that she could not stop. She gripped the key and turned it very slowly. She could feel the gears moving inside the lock.

Suddenly, a loud click echoed through the room. The sound was sharp and clear. It sounded like a twig snapping in the woods. It was the sound of the secret being let out. Rose jumped a little bit when she heard it. Her heart gave a big throb. She watched as the silver lock popped open. The lid of the black box moved. It popped open just a tiny bit. It was only an inch, but it was enough. A small crack of darkness appeared between the lid and the box. Rose stayed very still. She did not open it all the way yet. She just stared at that small crack. She wondered if she should stop now. She wondered if she should push the lid back down and lock it again. But she knew she could not stop. The click had changed everything. The promise was broken. The secret was right there, waiting for her to lift the lid.

The moonlight seemed to get even brighter. It shone right on the crack in the box. Rose felt like the whole world was watching her. The trees outside, the birds in the sky, and even the stars seemed to be waiting. She felt like she was about to learn something that would change her life forever. She did not know if the change would be good or bad. She did not know if she would be happy or sad. All she knew was that she could not go back to the way things were. She was no longer the wife who kept a secret. She was now the woman who knew how to open the box. The silence in the room was very heavy. It felt like the air was thick with mystery. Rose reached out her hand to the edge of the lid. Her fingers touched the cool dark wood. She was ready to see what was inside.

She thought about her life with David. She thought about the flowers and the walks in the park. She hoped with all her heart that the box would make her love him even more. She hoped it would be a beautiful end to a long mystery. But deep down, there was a tiny voice of fear. The voice asked her why David was so serious. Why did he use such a strong lock? Why did he carry the key for ten years? Rose tried to ignore the voice. she wanted to believe in the jewelry and the love letters. She wanted to believe in the happy ending. She took a breath and prepared to lift the lid the rest of the way. The black box was finally open, and the truth was only a second away.

The suspense was so high that Rose felt like she could not breathe. She was standing at the edge of a great discovery. Every day for ten years had led to this moment. Every Friday flower and every hand held in the park was connected to this small wooden box. Rose felt a sense of wonder. She felt like she was in a storybook. But this was not a dream. This was her real life. This was her real home. And the man she loved was the man who owned this secret. She felt a final spark of courage. She was going to see it. She was going to know the truth. Whatever was inside, she would face it. She would handle it. She was Rose, and she was done with secrets. The lid was waiting. The room was silent. The click was over, and the opening had begun.

Rose thinks that there should be no secrets between a husband and a wife. Do you agree with her, or do you think everyone needs a little bit of privacy?

Why do you think the box made such a loud scraping sound when Rose pulled it out? Do you think the house was trying to warn her?

Rose is hoping to find jewelry or love letters. Do you think she is being too hopeful, or do you think David really has a nice surprise for her?

Now that the box has made a loud "click" and the lid is open a little bit, do you think Rose can ever go back to being the same person she was before?
