Kate and Lesley came back from the bathroom. Lesley was wearing more make up than she usually did but she looked radiant. "So, what have you guy's been talking about?" said Kate.

"Well I've just offered Steven a job but he turned me down," said Daniel. Kate looked at me a bit shocked. "Well, not exactly," Daniel clarified. "He wants to take a few days to think about it. I said I'd show him around tomorrow morning."

"Oh good," said Kate. "That means Lesley and I can go shopping." Then getting serious, Kate said, "Look Steven, I don't know much about Daniel's work but his company gets thousands of applications from graduates each year, some even stop him in the street. If he's offered you a job then you should seriously consider it."

"I want to say yes," I said. "I'd just like a couple of days to think about it and of course talk it over with my future wife."

"Did I mention I'm engaged," said Lesley displaying the ring on her hand to the rest of the table and we all laughed.

Kate's 'surprise' trip to the theatre was in fact to see Cats, the musical. I've never been a big fan of musicals but you had to admire the spectacle of a West end performance and the girls loved it. Afterwards we went for a drink in a nearby wine bar and Daniel ordered champagne in celebration. I kept catching Lesley looking down at her engagement ring.

We got home at around 7.00 p.m. Kate suggested that we order in some Chinese food and went to the kitchen to phone the local restaurant. She'd only just got back to the lounge when the phone rang. She walked back to the kitchen and returned a moment later saying, "It's for you Lesley". When Lesley had gone out of the room Kate told us, "It's Ruth."

"Did you tell Ruth about the proposal?" asked Daniel.

"I told them both," I said, "just before they left for France and yes both of them gave their blessing. I felt that I had to ask them. In a weird way Ruth is probably the closest thing to a parent that Lesley has."

"What do you mean?" said Kate.

I'd forgotten that Kate probably didn't know what Daniel knew. She'd probably never even heard of Mr. MacGregor. Daniel looked at me nervously as I started to speak.

"Lesley's parents divorced when she was eleven. Both remarried and started new families. They pretty much abandoned her to boarding schools and holiday camps after that. She hasn't seen either of them in years and when neither turned up for her graduation she closed the book on them. Despite her looks and infectious personality Lesley has very few friends in this world and no family at all."

"That's so sad," said Kate.

"Like I said, in a weird way if it hadn't been for Ruth and David ... well who knows. Hopefully things are changing for her now. Last weekend a colleague asked her to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. You should have seen how happy she was. And this weekend, well, you've seen how much she's enjoyed herself. Not just today but last night as well."

"Do you think she might want an older sister?" asked Kate.

"I'm sure she would Kate," I replied.

Lesley came back into the room. She'd been crying again. "Ruth wants to talk to you," she said to me then went and sat next to Kate who put her arm around her and let her sob into her shoulder. Just like an older sister would.
