A Quest For Love - S01 E01

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 1

The sun was very bright in the town of Green Valley. It was the kind of sun that made the grass look like green velvet and the sky look like a big blue blanket. Most people in Green Valley were very happy. They said hello to each other. They shared cookies. They laughed at the jokes the mailman told. But there was one place in the town that felt different. That place was the neighborhood park. It was a beautiful park with big oak trees and a pond with ducks. However, there was a rule that every child and every adult knew by heart. When the big clock on the tall town tower struck four, you had to stay away from the park. You had to pick up your toys. You had to call your dogs. You had to leave as fast as your legs could carry you.

This was because of Mr. Okafor.

Mr. Okafor was a man who seemed to carry a dark cloud over his head even on the brightest days. He was very tall and very thin. His face was not soft like a pillow. Instead, his face was as hard as a cracked sidewalk that had been baked in the sun for too many years. He had deep lines around his mouth that never seemed to move. He had eyes that looked like cold gray stones. Every single day, exactly at four o’clock, Mr. Okafor would walk into the park. He did not look at the flowers. He did not look at the ducks in the pond. He walked straight to his favorite wooden bench. This bench was near the playground, right across from the swing set.

Once he reached the bench, Mr. Okafor would sit down. He sat so still that he looked like a frozen statue. He never smiled at the birds. He never waved at the people walking by. He certainly never talked to anyone. The people in the neighborhood were afraid of him. They whispered about him when they thought no one was listening. The children had many stories about why Mr. Okafor was so mean. Some said he was a wizard who had lost his magic. Others said he was a king from a far away land who had been sent away. But the most popular story was that his heart had turned to stone many years ago. They believed that if you touched his chest, you would only hear the sound of a rock hitting another rock.

Leo was a young boy who lived just three houses away from the park. Leo was different from the other children. He had a very messy head of curly hair and a pair of bright brown eyes that always wanted to see more. He loved his soccer ball more than anything else. He would practice his kicks every day. He wanted to be the best soccer player in the whole world. But Leo was not just good at sports. He had a very curious mind. While the other children ran away when Mr. Okafor arrived, Leo would sometimes hide behind a large oak tree to watch.

Leo noticed things that others did not see. He saw that Mr. Okafor always wore a heavy coat, even when it was very hot outside. He saw that Mr. Okafor never brought a book or a newspaper to read. Most importantly, Leo noticed where Mr. Okafor looked. The old man always stared at the same empty swing on the swing set. It was a red swing with rusty chains. Even when the wind was not blowing, Mr. Okafor would watch that swing as if he expected someone to appear on it. Leo also saw something else. Sometimes, Mr. Okafor’s hands would shake just a little bit. It was a tiny movement, like a leaf trembling in the wind, but Leo saw it. He wondered why a man who looked so scary would have shaking hands.

One Tuesday afternoon, the air was warm and smelled like freshly cut grass. Leo was at the park with his friends. They were playing a very exciting game of soccer. The score was tied. Everyone was shouting and running. Leo had the ball at his feet. He felt like he could do anything. He looked at the goal, which was made of two orange cones. He took a deep breath. He swung his leg back and gave the ball a very hard kick.

But something went wrong. Leo’s foot hit the ball at a strange angle. Instead of going toward the goal, the soccer ball flew high into the air. It was spinning like a bird that had lost its way. It went over the bushes. It went over the flower beds. It sailed through the air and landed with a soft thud right at the feet of Mr. Okafor.

The whole park went silent. It was as if someone had turned off the sound on a television. The birds stopped singing. The wind stopped blowing. The other children stood still for a second, their eyes wide with fear. Then, without saying a word, they all turned and ran away. They hid behind trees and walls. They watched from a distance, waiting to see what would happen to Leo.

Leo stood his ground. His heart was beating very fast, like a drum in his chest. He was scared, but his curiosity was stronger than his fear. He wanted his ball back, but he also wanted to see Mr. Okafor up close. He took a small step forward. Then another. He walked toward the bench where the man who scared the sun was sitting.

Mr. Okafor did not move at first. He looked down at the soccer ball. It was a white ball with black spots, and it looked very bright against his dark shoes. Slowly, very slowly, Mr. Okafor reached down to pick up the ball. His movements were stiff, as if his joints were rusty like the chains on the red swing. As he bent over, Leo got closer. He was now only a few feet away.

Leo looked at Mr. Okafor’s face. Up close, the lines on his skin looked like a map of a very long and difficult journey. His hair was the color of wood ash. Then, Leo saw it. He saw something sparkle in the old man’s eye. At first, Leo thought it was just the sun reflecting off the gray stones of his pupils. But then he realized the truth. It was not anger. It was not a mean look.

It was a tear.

A single, clear tear was resting on the edge of Mr. Okafor’s eyelid. It looked heavy, as if it had been held back for a long, long time. In that moment, Leo realized that the stories were wrong. Mr. Okafor did not have a heart of stone. He had a heart that was full of a very deep sadness. The tear told a story that the growls and the silence could not tell. Leo felt a strange feeling in his own heart. He felt sorry for the man everyone hated. He wanted to say something kind. He wanted to ask why he was crying.

Leo opened his mouth to speak. He wanted to say, “Are you okay, Mr. Okafor?” or “You can keep the ball if you want.” But before Leo could say a single word, something changed. The sadness in Mr. Okafor’s eyes vanished. It was replaced by a sharp, cold look. It was as if a curtain had been pulled down to hide a secret.

Mr. Okafor stood up quickly. He was much taller than Leo had imagined. He looked down at the young boy with a look that was truly terrifying. He did not hand the ball back. Instead, he dropped it, and it rolled back toward the grass. Then, Mr. Okafor leaned forward until his face was very close to Leo’s face. He let out a low growl. It was a sound that did not seem human. It sounded like a hungry animal protecting its home.

“Get out of here, boy,” Mr. Okafor growled. His voice was like the sound of gravel being crushed under a heavy wheel. “Do not ever look at me again. Do not ever come near this bench. Some things are better left alone. If you come back, you will regret it. Now run!”

The warning made Leo’s blood run cold. It was the scariest thing he had ever heard. The growl seemed to vibrate in the air around them. Leo did not wait for another word. He grabbed his soccer ball and ran as fast as he could. He did not look back until he reached the safety of his own front porch. His legs were shaking, and his breath was coming in short gasps. He looked back at the park. Mr. Okafor was sitting on the bench again, staring at the empty red swing, as if nothing had happened. But Leo knew what he had seen. He had seen the tear. And he knew that the quest for the truth about Mr. Okafor had only just begun.

Why do you think Mr. Okafor was crying when he saw the soccer ball?

What do you think is the secret behind the empty red swing that he always watches?

Should Leo go back to the park tomorrow, or should he listen to the scary warning?

Do you think Mr. Okafor is actually a mean person, or is he just very sad?

Have you ever met someone who seemed scary but turned out to be different inside?
