Episode 5: The Governor's Silent Daughter

The mansion was a very big place. It was filled with many rooms and many beautiful things. There were gold lamps and soft chairs. There were paintings that cost more money than a whole village could earn in a year. But as the days went by, Mr. Kalu began to see the truth. He realized that this mansion was not a home at all. It was a prison. It was a high tech prison built with the best technology in the world. There were cameras in every corner. There were sensors on the doors that tracked every movement. The Governor had built this place to keep people out, but he had also built it to keep a young girl's memory locked away. He wanted to make sure that whatever Elara knew would stay inside these cold stone walls. He wanted to make sure the world never found out the truth about what happened ten years ago.

Mr. Kalu knew he had to be very careful. He knew the red lights of the cameras were always watching him. He spent the next few days working with Elara. He did not try to force her to speak. He knew that her silence was like a wall she had built to keep herself safe. Instead, he spent his time teaching her how to trust again. He sat with her by the large window where the sun came in. He told her simple stories. He told her stories about birds that lived in cages. These birds were very sad. They had gold cages and the best seeds to eat, but they could not fly. They forgot how to sing because they were so lonely. But then, a friend would come and tell them about the big blue sky. The friend would tell them about the trees and the wind. Slowly, the birds would learn to fly again. They would find their voices and sing the most beautiful songs the world had ever heard.

As Mr. Kalu told these stories, he watched Elara closely. Each day, she became a little bit stronger. She started to sit up straighter. She started to look him in the eyes more often. Her eyes began to change. Before, they looked cloudy and full of fear. They looked like a window that was covered in dust. But now, the dust was starting to go away. A tiny light was shining from behind her eyes. She was starting to believe that she could be like the birds in the stories. she was starting to believe that she could be free. Mr. Kalu felt a little bit of joy in his heart, but he also felt a lot of worry. He knew that the Governor was watching, and the Governor was not a man who liked to wait.

The Governor was becoming more and more impatient. The big campaign rally was only one day away. This was the day when the Governor would stand in front of thousands of people. He would tell them why he should be the leader for four more years. He needed Elara to be there. He needed the people to see a happy family. He called Mr. Kalu to his private study. This was a room that most people were never allowed to enter. It was a dark room filled with maps of the city. The maps had red marks all over them. There were also lists of names on the desk. These were the names of people the Governor had crushed to get his power. It was a room that felt like it was full of secrets and bad intentions.

The Governor was sitting behind his large desk. He had a glass of dark juice in his hand. He looked at Mr. Kalu with a look that made the teacher feel very small. I hear she is making noises, the Governor said. A cruel smile played on his lips. It was not a happy smile. It was a smile that a hunter gives when he has caught his prey. You have done well, teacher. You have done what the doctors could not do. The Governor leaned forward. The light from the lamp made his face look like a mask of shadows. At the rally tomorrow, she will stand by my side. She will look at the cameras and tell the world that I am the best father. She will tell them that I am the greatest leader this country has ever seen.

Mr. Kalu felt a cold chill run down his spine. He knew what the Governor was doing. He was not happy that his daughter was getting better. He was happy because he could use her. If she does this, the Governor continued, I will make you a very rich man. I will give you a big house and more money than you can count. You will never have to teach in a small village again. But if she fails, you know what will happen. The Governor did not have to say the words. The threat was hanging in the air like a dark cloud. Mr. Kalu felt sick to his stomach. He hated that the Governor wanted to use his own daughter as a puppet. He hated that he was being told to help with this lie.

Mr. Kalu left the study and went back to Elara’s room. The hallway felt longer than usual. Every step he took felt heavy. When he entered the room, Elara was waiting for him. She saw the look on his face and she knew something was wrong. Mr. Kalu sat down next to her. He did not want to hide the truth from her. He told her the Governor’s plan. He told her about the rally and the cameras. He told her that her father wanted her to say things that were not true. He told her that her father wanted to show the world a family that did not really exist.

When Elara heard the plan, she began to cry. It was a very quiet sound, but it was full of pain. Her small body began to shake with the weight of a decade of sadness. She had been quiet for ten years to keep her secrets safe, and now she was being forced to speak for the man she feared the most. She looked at Mr. Kalu with eyes that were full of tears. She was begging him for help. She did not want to be a puppet. She did not want to lie for the man who had turned her life into a prison.

Elara reached out and grabbed a pen from the table. She grabbed Mr. Kalu’s hand and turned it over so the palm was facing up. Her hand was shaking so much that she could hardly hold the pen. She began to write on his skin. Each letter felt like a heavy weight. She wrote three words in big, shaky letters. He killed him. Mr. Kalu looked at his palm and felt like the world was spinning. He knew exactly what she meant. She was talking about the man who had disappeared ten years ago. She was telling him that her father was a murderer. The truth was finally out. It was written in black ink on his very own hand.

Mr. Kalu looked at Elara. He wanted to tell her that he would protect her. He wanted to tell her that they would find a way to tell the world the truth. He wanted to tell her that the Governor would not win. But before he could respond, the heavy door of the room flew open. It was the Governor’s personal doctor. The doctor was a tall man with a thin face and eyes that never seemed to blink. He was wearing a white coat that was perfectly clean. He was carrying a silver tray. On the tray, there was a small glass bottle and a needle. The needle was long and sharp, and it was filled with a clear liquid.

The doctor walked into the room with a wicked grin. He did not look like a man who wanted to help people. He looked like a man who enjoyed causing pain. The Governor wants to make sure she is ready for tomorrow, the doctor said. His voice was smooth and scary. This is to help her relax for the big stage. It will make her calm. It will make her do exactly what she is told. He picked up the needle and held it up to the light. The clear liquid inside sparkled. Mr. Kalu knew that this was not medicine to help her relax. It was a drug to make her sleepy and easy to control. It was a way to silence the truth forever.

Mr. Kalu stood up. He moved between the doctor and Elara. He could feel Elara hiding behind him. She was grabbing onto his shirt with her small hands. She was terrified of the needle. She knew that if that liquid went into her arm, she would lose her mind. She would become the puppet the Governor wanted. Mr. Kalu looked at the doctor and then at the silver tray. He knew he had to act fast. He knew that the guards were right outside the door. He knew that the cameras were watching. But he also knew that he could not let them hurt this girl again.

The doctor took a step closer. His grin became wider. Step aside, teacher, the doctor said. I have a job to do. The Governor does not like to be kept waiting. He moved the needle closer to Mr. Kalu. The air in the room felt freezing cold. It was the coldest it had ever been. Mr. Kalu looked at his palm where the words he killed him were still wet. He looked at Elara’s crying face. He knew that this was the most important moment of his life. He had to decide if he would follow the rules or if he would fight for the truth.

Do you think Mr. Kalu will find a way to stop the doctor from giving Elara the injection?

What do you think the Governor will do if he finds out Elara wrote "He killed him" on Mr. Kalu’s hand?

Is there anyone else in the mansion who might be secretly helping Mr. Kalu and Elara?

How can Elara tell the truth at the rally if she is being drugged?

If you were Mr. Kalu, would you take the Governor's money or stay and fight for Elara?

The tension is at a breaking point! The Governor is more dangerous than ever, and Elara’s life is on the line. Will the truth finally come out, or will it be buried forever? You cannot miss what happens next in this shocking story.
