Revenge Mission — Episode Six

The kidnappers returned to their hideout after Dankwa left the field. They opened the black bag and they were overjoyed. Bundles of crisp notes stared back at them. N500,000 cedis. The room filled with laughter. “We are rich!” Kofi shouted, throwing a bundle in the air. The other men clapped and danced. They quickly began to count and share. Greed sparkled in their eyes as they piled the money into separate heaps. For the first time in years, they felt like kings. None of them knew that their celebration would soon turn into silence, forever and ever.

After sharing, Kofi took his phone and dialed Purity’s number. “The deal is done. Come and collect your share,” he said. Purity smiled where she stood inside Dankwa’s compound. She had been waiting for this call. “I will come,” she whispered softly. She sneaked out quietly, holding a small bag in her hand. She stopped at a food seller on the roadside. “Give me plates of rice and stew. Put meat inside. Pack it well.” The woman smiled and handed her the food. But Purity had her own small bottle hidden. She mixed the poison into the food.

She whispered to herself, “Nobody will cheat me. That money must be mine.” She carried the food and walked quickly through the dusty streets of Tamale. The sun was going down, but her mind was sharp. She thought of her mother’s face, of the blood that stained the floor twenty years ago. She thought of her father living like a king while she suffered on the streets.

“I will take everything from him. This is my revenge,” she told herself with steady voice.

She reached the kidnappers’ hideout. It was a small mud house at the edge of town. The men were still excited, laughing loudly and counting their money again. “Ah, our sister is here!” Kofi shouted when he saw her. Purity entered with a smile. She placed the food down and greeted them warmly. “I cannot thank you enough. You helped me, and I brought food to celebrate. Please eat.” The men cheered. One of them carried the bag of food to the table. The smell of stew filled the room. Their mouths watered. None of them suspected any danger at all.

Before the food, Kofi brought out a bundle of money and placed it in Purity’s hand. “Here is your share. 100, 000 cedis,” he said proudly. Purity smiled as if she was satisfied. “Thank you,” she said softly, putting the money into her bag. But in her heart, she wanted more. She wanted all of it. She wanted the 400,000 still lying on the table. Her eyes shone with hunger. She knew the food she brought carried death inside. Soon, their laughter would end. Soon, she alone would control everything. She stood calmly, watching them prepare to eat.

The men opened the plates. Rice, stew, meat, and fried fish filled their eyes. They laughed and thanked Purity. “You are a good woman,” one of them said. “Not many will remember us like this.”

“You are my brothers. I cannot forget you.” They started eating quickly, each man scooping handfuls with joy. The sound of chewing filled the room. They were hungry and happy. Kofi lifted his plate high and said, “This is a good day! We are rich, and we eat like kings.” The others shouted back, “Yes! Long live our fortune!”

Purity sat quietly, her eyes watching them. Inside her bag, she clutched her own share of the money tightly. She was calm. She looked at the 400,000 on the table, stacked like a mountain. She imagined herself carrying it away alone. She imagined her father crying when he found out he had lost his sons and his money. Her lips trembled as she whispered silently, “Mama, I will make him suffer for you.” The kidnappers continued eating, laughing without fear. Each bite took them closer to death, and only Purity knew it at that moment.

Minutes passed, and then one of the men coughed suddenly. He grabbed his throat. “What is happening to me?” he cried. Another man dropped his plate, his eyes rolling. “My stomach! My stomach is burning!” he screamed. Confusion filled the room. Plates scattered, stew spilled on the floor. The men began to fall one after another, holding their stomachs and gasping for air. Purity remained seated.

She watched them struggle. She did not move to help. Their cries filled the night, but she felt no pity. “Eat well,” she whispered, “for this is your last food."

They all died.

The room smelled of stew and death. Purity stepped forward and picked up the bundles of money from the table. She placed them carefully into her bag, adding to the 100,000 cedis already there. Her bag was heavy now, filled with cash and vengeance. She turned to the bodies one last time and whispered, “Rest well, my brothers. You were useful to me, but my mission is bigger than you.”
