Revenge Mission — Episode Three

Madam Rita was folding clothes in the living room when her phone rang. She picked it absentmindedly, smiling, but the smile died immediately.

The voice on the other side was sad and sorrowful. “Madam, please come quickly… your daughter Nancy… something has happened… she is gone.”

Madam Rita’s heart stopped. “What do you mean by gone? Which Nancy? My daughter? My girl?” She screamed. The phone nearly fell from her hand. She rushed out without her slippers, shouting. Her whole body was shaking. “God forbid! My child cannot die! My Nancy cannot die!” she cried as she ran.

When Madam Rita entered the school compound, she met teachers and pupils gathered in silence. The headmaster came forward, his face wet with tears.

“Madam… please, be strong.” She pushed him away. “Where is my daughter? Where is my Nancy?” They led her to the clinic. There, on a small bed, Nancy’s body lay covered with white cloth. Madam Rita screamed and pulled the cloth. She saw her daughter’s lifeless face. She hugged the body, shaking it.

“Nancy! Wake up! Don’t do this to me!” She wailed loudly. Her tears flowed uncontrollably. Teachers and pupils wept with her in pain.

The body was quickly taken from the school to the hospital. Madam Rita followed, still screaming. At the hospital, doctors tried to explain, but she was not listening. She kept shouting, “My daughter was fine this morning! She was laughing! She was happy! How can she be dead?”

Soon, Chief Dankwa was called. He rushed into the hospital, his gold wristwatch flashing as he held his head. “What is this? What happened to my daughter?” he demanded. Doctors tried to calm him down. They prepared to carry out an autopsy. But the atmosphere was filled with sorrow and confusion.

Dankwa looked at his wife with suspicion. “You were the one who packed the food this morning. What exactly did you give her?” he asked harshly.

Madam Rita was shocked. “What are you saying? She is my only daughter! Why would I harm her?” She broke down again. “I packed the food with my own hands. I did nothing wrong.” Dankwa turned to the doctors. “Please, do everything to find out the truth.” The doctors nodded and began their procedures. Purity, who had accompanied Madam Rita, stood at the corner quietly. She was pretending to weep.

Days later, the autopsy result came out. The doctors called Chief Dankwa and Madam Rita. They sat in the office, shaking. The doctor sighed deeply.

“Sir, your daughter died of poison. The substance was inside the food she ate.” Madam Rita screamed and fell to the ground. “Poison? How? Who would poison my daughter?”

Dankwa was sad. His face turned red with anger. “This is unbelievable. Who poisoned my child?” The doctor explained again. “The food she ate was poisoned.” Madam Rita cried and held her husband’s hand. “I did not poison my child. I cannot do such evil.”

The matter was reported to the police. Officers came to the hospital to question Madam Rita. They said, “Madam, you were the one who packed the food. You may be a suspect. We will take you to the station.” Madam Rita cried bitterly.

“I am innocent! She was my own daughter. I gave birth to her. I cannot kill her.” But the police insisted. Dankwa stood up in anger. “Stop this nonsense! How dare you accuse my wife of killing her own daughter? She is a mother. She loved that girl more than her own life. You must release her.”

The police explained that the case was serious and that an arrest must be made. But Dankwa was a powerful man in Tamale. He brought out money and placed it on the table. “Take this. End the matter. Do not disgrace my family.” The officers exchanged glances. One of them said, “Sir, this is against procedure.”

Dankwa leaned closer and whispered, “You know who I am. If this news spreads, it will shake my name. Take the money and close your mouth. Nobody must hear about poison again.” The police officers collected the money and bowed their heads quietly.

When Madam Rita heard that the police were no longer going to arrest her, she wept and hugged her husband.

“Thank you, my husband. Thank you for saving me from shame. But my heart is broken. I lost my only girl.” Dankwa consoled her, though his own eyes were red with tears.

“We must be strong. God knows why this happened. But we must bury her quickly. We cannot let the world mock us.” They made arrangements. Nancy’s body was prepared for burial. The house was filled with visitors. People came to sympathize, but sorrow filled every corner of Tamale.

The burial was done quietly. Madam Rita almost collapsed beside the grave. She cried, “My daughter! My Nancy! How can I live without you?” Women gathered around her, holding her shoulders. Dankwa stood with folded arms, looking like a broken man. But he refused to show weakness.

“Let her rest,” he said in a heavy voice. “She was my joy, but she is gone.” People shook their heads and whispered among themselves. They wondered how such a rich man could not save his daughter. The grave was covered with sand. Everyone left with heavy hearts. The house became full of silence.

Inside her small maid’s room, Purity sat on her bed after the burial. She looked into the mirror, her eyes glowing with satisfaction. She whispered to herself, “Mama, it has started. Nancy is gone. They buried her today. The same way they buried you many years ago. One down, four to go. I will not stop. I will finish all of them. I will make sure this house becomes empty. Dankwa will cry until he has no tears left. He will remember the child he abandoned. He will remember the wife he k.illed. My revenge has just begun.”
