Episode 7: The Golden Cage
Linda stood in the middle of the large office. The air was very cold because of the air conditioner. She held the passport in her hands. Her fingers were shaking. She looked at the photo. The photo was definitely her. It was a picture of her face from when she was still at the university. Her hair was neat and she was smiling in the photo. But the name next to her face was not Linda. It was a completely different name. It was a name she had never heard in her life. The passport also said she was from a country that was very far away.
Linda felt like the room was spinning. She had to sit down on the floor because her legs felt weak like water. Why did Frank have this? Why did he have a fake identity for her? She started to think about all the times Frank had been secretive. She thought about the way he never let her see his bank books. She thought about the lady in the red dress and the strange woman at the door. Suddenly, Linda realized something very scary. She did not know the man she married at all. She had lived in this big house for months, but the man who slept next to her was a complete stranger. She was married to a man who lived a life full of lies.
Linda felt a cold shiver go down her back. She looked at the dark wood of the desk. She felt like there were many more secrets hidden inside it. She began to look through the other papers. She moved slowly because she did not want to make any noise. She found old letters and bank papers. Then, at the very back of a deep drawer, she saw something familiar. She reached in and pulled out some papers that were covered in a thick layer of dust.
When she wiped the dust away with her hand, she saw what they were. They were her university certificates. These were the papers that proved she had graduated with high marks. These were the papers that showed she was a smart and capable woman. Linda looked at the certificates and began to cry. Her tears fell on the dusty paper. She remembered how hard she had worked for these. She remembered the long nights she spent studying by a small lamp. She remembered how happy she felt on the day she finished school.
Back then, she had so many dreams. She wanted to work in a big office. She wanted to earn her own money and help her village. But she had been in a hurry. She wanted the good life too fast. She had chosen the easy way by following Frank. Now, looking at her dusty certificates, she felt a deep pain in her heart. She realized that she had lost her dignity. She realized that if she had been patient, she could have built a life for herself. She could have worked legally and been proud of herself. Instead, she was a prisoner in a house made of gold.
But seeing the certificates did something to Linda. It was like a small light began to glow inside her. She realized that the smart girl from the university was not dead. She was still inside her. Linda decided that she was not going to give up. She was going to try and find a way out of the golden cage. She put the certificates back where she found them. She also put the fake passport back in the hidden spot. She closed the desk carefully and walked out of the office. She went to the kitchen and began to cook, but her mind was busy making a plan.
Linda knew she could not use her own phone because Frank had smashed it. She also knew she could not use the house computer because Frank watched everything she did. She had to be very clever. Her neighbor was a kind old lady who lived alone. This neighbor had a small computer. Linda decided to wait until Frank went out for his big meetings. One afternoon, after Frank drove away in his shiny car, Linda snuck out of the back door. She ran to the neighbor’s house and knocked on the door.
The neighbor let her in and offered her some tea. Linda asked if she could use the computer for just a few minutes. She told the neighbor she wanted to look for some recipes. But when Linda sat at the computer, she did not look for recipes. She looked for jobs. She looked for places that needed a smart woman with a university degree. She found a few offices that were looking for workers. She quickly sent her information to them. She felt a spark of hope. It was a tiny spark, like a small candle in a dark room, but it was enough to make her feel alive again.
As the days went by, Linda began to feel different. She was still scared of Frank, but she felt stronger. She started to stand a little taller. She did not cry as much as she used to. She would wake up and think about the jobs she had applied for. She would imagine herself walking into an office and earning her own salary. This feeling of hope made her face look different. She did not look like a broken bird anymore.
However, Frank was a very observant man. He watched Linda like a cat watches a mouse. He noticed that she was not crying as much. He noticed that she was not begging for his attention. This did not make Frank happy. In fact, it made him very angry. Frank liked it when Linda was sad. He liked it when she was crying and scared. It made him feel powerful. When he saw that she was becoming a bit more confident, he felt like he was losing his grip on her. He did not want a strong wife. He wanted a trophy that he could control.
Frank began to be even meaner to her. One evening, he came home and saw her sitting in the living room. She was looking out of the window and smiling a little bit. Frank walked up to her and grabbed her hair. He pulled her head back and looked into her eyes. He asked her why she was looking so happy. He told her that she had no reason to smile. He started checking her bags every day when he came home. He went through her closet and threw her clothes on the floor. He wanted to see if she was hiding anything from him.
Frank began to monitor every move she made in the house. He told her, Linda, do not think you are smart. I know everything you do. He stood very close to her and whispered in a scary voice. He told her, if I catch you trying to be independent, I will make sure your family suffers. He reminded her again that he was the one paying for her father’s medicine. He told her that if she ever tried to leave or get a job, he would stop the money and her father would die.
Linda was terrified. Her heart felt cold when he spoke about her family. She did not want her parents to suffer because of her. But even though she was scared, she kept her secret. She did not tell him about the neighbor’s computer. She did not tell him about the job applications. She went back to acting like a quiet servant. She kept the spark of hope hidden deep inside her where Frank could not find it. She was like a secret soldier waiting for the right time to fight.
One morning, the house was very tense. Frank had a very big meeting with his father and some important people. He was wearing his most expensive suit. He was in a very big hurry. He was shouting at the servants and shouting at Linda to bring him his coffee. He was running around the house, looking for his leather bag and his pens. He looked very stressed and his face was red.
Linda brought him his coffee, but he pushed it away. He looked at his watch and saw that he was late. He ran to the hallway to get his shoes. He was moving very fast, like a storm. He reached into his pocket to get his car keys. But his pocket was empty. He looked on the table. The keys were not there. He looked in his bag. The keys were not there either.
Frank began to lose his mind. He started throwing things around the hallway. He threw a vase against the wall and it broke into a hundred pieces. He flipped over a chair. He began to scream like a wild animal. He was shouting, Where are my keys! Who took my keys! His voice was so loud that the windows seemed to shake. He looked at Linda with eyes that were full of fire. He looked like he was about to explode with anger. Linda stood against the wall, her heart hammering against her ribs. The man who looked like a prince was now acting like a beast, and the keys were nowhere to be found.
