The Prince With 10 Brides
The sun came up on the morning after the dance, but it did not feel like a new day in the village of Omalin. It felt like the village was under a heavy blanket of grey smoke that would not go away. The birds did not sing their happy songs in the tall palm trees. The goats in their pens did not make a sound. Even the dogs were very quiet, hiding under the wooden benches. Everyone in the village knew that something was very wrong. The King had given a loud command that the wedding preparations for the many brides should begin immediately. He wanted to follow the words that his son had spoken in the square. He thought that if the Prince had his way, maybe the young man would get better soon. He hoped that the wedding would bring back the happy smile to his son's face. But the joy was completely absent. There was no laughter in the streets. There was no music playing in the market. The women who usually sang while they worked at the grinding stones were silent. Their eyes were full of worry and their hearts were very heavy. The men who carried the big logs for the cooking fires walked with their heads down. The happy spirit of Omalin had vanished like a dream in the night. The wedding was happening, but no one was truly happy about it.
Inside the palace walls, the atmosphere had turned very cold. It was not a normal cold that comes when the sun goes down. It was a cold that felt like ice was growing inside the very stone walls of the palace. The air was so chilly that when the servants talked, they could see their breath in the air like little white clouds of steam. The big fires in the palace would not stay lit for very long. The logs would just turn to black ash without giving off any warmth at all. It felt like a winter that had come from deep inside the dark ground. The servants were shivering. They wore their thickest clothes made of animal skins, but they still felt a sharp chill in their bones. This cold was not caused by the weather or the wind outside. It was a coldness that came from the dark magic that the girls had brought into the royal house. It was the smell of secrets and broken ancient laws. Every room in the palace felt like a cave.
Prince Azu was the center of all this strange coldness. He was locked inside his royal room, and no one was allowed to go inside except for the King and the high priests. He was once the kindest man in the whole village. He was the kind of leader who helped the poor people and always had a kind word for the little children. He was the pride of Omalin. But now, he was changing into something else. The mix of so many different charms and conflicting spells was fighting a war inside his mind. Zola had used her grey powder made of tears. Nneka had used her haunting song. The other girls had used their own secret charms. All these different magics were trying to do the same thing at the same time. They all wanted to own his heart and control his thoughts. But the spells were not the same. They were like many angry cats fighting over a single piece of meat. They were biting and pulling at his brain. His mind was being torn into tiny pieces by the darkness that was growing inside him every hour.
By the second day, the Prince was no longer the man that everyone loved. He could no longer speak in human words. When his father, the King, came to sit by his bed and talk to him, the Prince did not answer. He did not say Hello or I am tired or Please help me, father. He did not say anything at all in the language of men. Instead, he would look at his father with eyes that were no longer brown. They were turning a scary yellow color, like the eyes of a wild animal in the deep woods. Suddenly, he would drop down from his bed to the floor. He would put his hands and his feet on the ground. He would move across the room on all fours. He began to growl. It was a deep, low, and scary sound that came from his throat. It sounded exactly like a hungry leopard hiding in the tall grass. He would bared his teeth and hiss at anyone who tried to come near him. The servants ran away crying in fear. They had never seen a human being act like a beast before. It was a sight that made their blood turn to ice in their veins. He was becoming an animal.
By the third day, the madness became even louder and more violent. The Prince was still wearing his expensive royal robes. These were robes made of the finest silk and the softest cotton in the land. They had cost many gold coins and took many weeks for the best tailors to sew. But the Prince did not care about his beautiful clothes anymore. He began to tear the robes with his hands and his sharp teeth. He ripped the silk into tiny rags until they looked like pieces of old rubbish on the floor. He threw the rags on the ground and walked over them. He was also screaming at the shadows on the palace walls. These were shadows that no one else in the room can see. He pointed his shaking finger at the empty corners of the room. He told the shadows to go away and leave him alone. He looked like he was fighting an army of ghosts that was invisible to the rest of the world. He also refused to eat any food. The royal cooks made all his favorite meals. They brought him roast chicken, sweet yams, and fresh fruit on golden plates. But the Prince did not eat a single bite. He would pick up the heavy golden plates and throw them at the stone walls with all his strength. The sound of the metal hitting the stone was loud and scary, like a clap of thunder in the middle of a storm. He was very hungry but he could not eat.
The ten brides who had worked so hard to win the Prince were now living in the palace. They had spent all their money and all their time on magic. They had dreamed of wearing golden crowns and sitting on high thrones. They wanted to be the most powerful women in the village. But now, they were completely terrified. They did not feel like Queens at all. They stayed in their small rooms with the doors locked tight. They did not want to go near the room where the Prince was growling and screaming. They whispered to each other in the dark hallways. They realized that they had made a very huge and terrible mistake. They had wanted a handsome Prince to be their husband, but they had created a monster instead. They had wanted power and fame, but now they only had fear and sadness. Zola was crying in her room because she was afraid the Prince would hurt her. Nneka had stopped humming her magic songs because her voice was shaking too much. They knew deep in their hearts that their charms had caused this disaster. They had tried to steal a human heart, and in the process, they had broken a man's soul. They were now brides to a nightmare. They were very afraid.
The King was completely heartbroken. He sat in his big throne room and cried until his eyes were red. He was an old man now, and his only son was disappearing into the darkness of madness. He did not know how to help him or how to bring him back to the light. He felt like he was watching his son drown in a river of shadows. The village of Omalin was also full of dark whispers. The people talked at the market while they bought their food. They talked at the river while they washed their clothes. They said that the gods of the land were very angry. They said that the ancient laws had been broken by the girls, and now the whole kingdom would have to pay the price. They missed their beloved leader very much. They wanted the kind and gentle Prince Azu to come back to them. But instead, they had a man who acted like a leopard and screamed at shadows that were not there.
What had happened to their beloved leader? He was now completely abnormal. He was just a shell of the man he used to be. The person who used to smile and lead with love was gone. The darkness was winning the battle. The magic was like a thick, black fog that would not move away.
Everyone in the palace and the village was waiting for the end. They were waiting to see if the Prince would ever speak a human word again. They were waiting to see if he would ever stand on two feet like a man again. Or was he lost forever in the world of shadows? Was there any way to bring him back from the very edge of madness? The suspense was like a heavy weight on the village of Omalin, and no one knew if the sun would ever truly shine on the palace again. The Prince was lost, and the ten brides could only watch in horror as their dreams turned into a nightmare that had no morning. This was the end of the man they knew. The village was full of fear because the future of the kingdom was now very uncertain and everyone was waiting for a miracle to happen very soon. They were all afraid.
