The Prince With 10 Brides
The sun was coming up over the trees. It was a very beautiful morning in the land of Omalin. The sky was turning a soft orange and yellow color. The birds were starting to sing their morning songs. In every small house made of red mud and grass, the people of Omalin were just starting to wake up. They did not know that today would be a day they would never forget. The morning air was cool and sweet. The smell of wood fires and breakfast porridge began to fill the village. It felt like any other day, but it was not.
Then, a very loud sound broke the peace. It was the heavy beat of the royal drum. It went boom, boom, boom. This was not a normal sound. This was the sound of the King. When the drum beat like that, it meant there was a very big message. It meant every person in the village had to stop what they were doing. The sound went through the trees. It went over the hills. It went into every ear in Omalin. The heavy beat shattered the silence. It made the hearts of the people beat faster.
For many years, the kingdom of Omalin had been very quiet. People went to their farms. They went to the market. They lived their lives in peace. But there was one thing everyone talked about every day. They talked about Prince Azu. Prince Azu was the only son of the Great King. He was a very special young man. He was very strong, and his arms were like the branches of a big oak tree. But he was also very kind. He had a smile that made people feel happy. He would help the old people carry their heavy pots of water. He would play with the children in the dusty streets. Everyone loved him very much.
But the people of Omalin had a big question. They wondered when Prince Azu would choose a wife. He was old enough to be a leader. He was old enough to have a family. The golden throne was waiting for a Queen to sit beside him. The people wanted to see the Prince happy. They wanted to see the palace filled with the sound of a wedding. For a long time, the Prince had not picked anyone. He was waiting for something, but nobody knew what it was.
As the drum kept beating, the villagers began to run. They left their cooking fires. They left their brooms on the ground. They all headed toward the big village square. This was the place where all the big news was told. Mothers held the hands of their little children. The old men leaned on their walking sticks and moved as fast as they could. The young women were the fastest. They straightened their colorful clothes. They fixed their hair as they ran. They all wanted to know what the King had to say.
The square was soon filled with hundreds of people. There was so much noise. Everyone was whispering to their neighbors. They were all asking the same thing. Is it about the Prince? Is it about the war? Is it about the rain? The dust from the ground rose up into the air as more people arrived. The sun was getting higher now. It was getting warmer. The excitement in the air was so thick that you could almost touch it.
Finally, the King’s messenger arrived. He was a tall man who looked very proud. He wore a bright red robe that reached his feet. In his hand, he held a scroll. The scroll was made of the very best animal skin. It was tied with a golden string. The messenger walked to the middle of the square and stood on a high stone. He looked at all the people. He did not say anything at first. He just looked at them. This made the people even more quiet. The crowd held their collective breath. Nobody wanted to make a sound. Even the birds seemed to stop singing to listen.
The messenger slowly untied the golden string. He unrolled the scroll with great care. He cleared his throat very loudly. His voice was like a lion’s roar when he finally spoke. He shouted so that even the people at the back could hear every word.
By the decree of the Great King, the messenger began. The crowd leaned in closer. Prince Azu shall choose a bride in two weeks! Every young lady in Omalin is invited to a grand beauty and dance competition. The Prince will watch you all, and the one who pleases his heart shall become our next Queen.
As soon as the messenger stopped talking, a huge wave of whispers swept through the crowd. It sounded like the wind blowing through a cornfield. The young women started talking all at once. Some of them screamed with joy. Some of them turned very red because they were shy. The mothers began to hug their daughters. They were all thinking the same thing. My daughter could be the Queen. My daughter could live in the palace.
The news was like a fire that could not be put out. The race had begun. The messenger rolled up the scroll and walked back toward the palace. But the people stayed in the square. They could not move. They were too busy thinking about the two weeks ahead. Two weeks was not a long time. There was so much to do. They needed new clothes. They needed to learn how to dance perfectly. They needed to make sure they looked more beautiful than anyone else.
Among the crowd, there were many different faces. There was Adanna, who was known for her long, dark hair. She was already thinking about which beads she would wear around her neck. There was Zola, who was the best dancer in her family. She started to move her feet in the dust right then and there. Every girl felt like she had a chance. The palace was beautiful, and the Prince was even better. To be the Queen of Omalin was the biggest dream anyone could have.
But as the young women looked at each other, something started to change. At first, they were all friends. They had grown up together. They had played together since they were babies. But now, they were not just friends. They were rivals. They were in a competition. A dark shadow began to grow in their eyes. It was the shadow of desperation. Some of them wanted to win so much that they started to feel angry at the other girls. They looked at their friends and thought, she is too pretty, or she dances too well.
The air in the square was not happy anymore. It felt heavy and cold, even though the sun was hot. The young women began to walk away in small groups. They did not talk to each other like they used to. They were already planning. They were already thinking of ways to be the best. Some of them had hearts that were full of love for the Prince. They wanted to marry him because he was kind. But some of them only wanted the crown. They only wanted the gold and the power. They wanted to be better than everyone else.
Who among them would go to any length to wear the crown? This was the question that hung in the air. Would someone try to hurt another girl? Would someone try to use a trick to win? The competition was going to be very hard. It was not just about dancing. It was about what was inside their hearts. But the girls did not know that yet. They only thought about the beauty and the music.
Then there were others who were more quiet. These were the girls who did not push to the front of the crowd. They stood in the back and listened. They felt that if they were meant to be the Queen, it would happen. They would wait for destiny to call their names. They did not want to fight. They just wanted to be themselves. But in a land where everyone was fighting to win, could a quiet girl ever be noticed? Could the Prince see through the fancy clothes and the fast dancing?
The village of Omalin was not the same anymore. The peace was gone. In every house, there was talking and planning. The tailors were suddenly very busy. They had to make many new dresses. The bead makers were working all night long. Everyone wanted the best beads. The drums for the dancing were being tuned. Every day, you could hear the sound of feet hitting the ground as the girls practiced their moves. They practiced until their legs were tired and their feet were sore.
Prince Azu stayed inside the palace walls. He did not come out to see the girls practicing. He stayed with his father, the King. He knew that his life was about to change. He knew that in two weeks, he would have to make a very big choice. He did not want just any girl. He wanted someone who would help him lead the people. He wanted someone who had a heart as big as his own. But how could he find her among so many?
The girls were getting more and more worried as the days went by. The desperation was growing. Some girls started to tell lies about their friends. They wanted to make the others look bad. They wanted to make sure they were the only ones the Prince liked. The friendship that had lasted for years was breaking apart. All because of a crown. All because of a competition.
The sun started to go down on that first day. The orange sky turned to dark blue. The stars came out one by one. But the village was not sleeping. The fires were still burning. The whispers were still going on. The shadow of the competition was over everything. It was like a giant cloud that would not move.
Who would be the one? Who would do anything to win? And who would stay true to themselves? The two weeks were going to be the most exciting and the most scary time in the history of Omalin. The Prince was waiting. The girls were preparing. The crown was sitting on a velvet cushion in the palace, waiting for a head to rest upon.
But there were secrets in Omalin. There were things that the people did not know. There were people who were planning things in the dark. The story of the ten brides was just beginning. It was not going to be a simple story of a dance and a wedding. It was going to be a story of many hearts. It was going to be a story of what happens when people want something too much.
As the night got darker, the village square was empty. But the dust had not settled. The feeling of the race was still there. Every young lady went to bed that night dreaming of the golden throne. They dreamed of the Prince’s kind eyes. They dreamed of the day they would walk into the palace as a Queen. But for some, those dreams would turn into something else. The shadow was there, waiting for the sun to rise again.
The kingdom of Omalin was on the edge of a great change. The air was still, but the hearts of the people were moving fast. The drum had stopped, but the message was still ringing in everyone's head.
