My Mother-in-law Hates Me
EPISODE 6
Linda lay on the floor, weak and helpless. Blood was still dripping from her head. Her eyes were half closed. She tried to speak, but no sound came out. Her mother-in-law stood by the door for a few seconds, breathing heavily.
The old woman looked at her and hissed. “That is what you get for being stubborn,” she said coldly. “You cannot even cook ordinary beans properly. You want to bring shame to this house. Stay there and learn your lesson.” Then she turned and walked away, leaving Linda bleeding on the floor like a stranger.
The old woman entered her room and locked the door. She picked her Bible and began to pray loudly, pretending not to care. “Oh Lord, deliver me from this useless woman my son brought into my life,” she said. “She came here to destroy our peace, but you will not allow her.” She prayed and sang while Linda continued bleeding in the sitting room. Every sound from the old woman’s prayer made Linda weaker. Her head was spinning. She could not believe the woman left her to die like an animal.
Minutes passed, but Linda was still conscious. She knew she might die if she didn’t get help. With all the strength left in her, she slowly crawled toward her room. “God, please help me,” she whispered as she dragged her body on the floor. Her gown was soaked with blood. She finally reached her bed and picked up her phone. Her vision was blurry. She dialed her mother’s number and placed the phone to her ear with a shaking hand. When her mother answered, Linda started crying softly.
“Mama… please come,” she said weakly. “They have killed me. Please come and take me to the hospital.” Her mother’s voice sounded frightened. “What happened, my daughter? Who hurt you?” she asked quickly. “It’s Mama Ajulu,” Linda said in tears. “She beat me… I fell on the glass table. There is blood everywhere. Please come now, Mama. I don’t want to die.” Her mother’s heart started beating fast. “Don’t worry, I’m coming immediately,” she said. “Just hold on, my child. I’m coming.”
Without wasting time, Linda’s mother rushed out of her house. She didn’t even bother to change her clothes. She stopped a taxi outside and shouted at the driver, “Please, my daughter is dying! Take me to her house !” The driver quickly drove off. Throughout the journey, tears rolled down the woman’s cheeks. “Oh God, please don’t let anything happen to my only daughter,” she prayed repeatedly. The thirty-minute drive felt like a whole year. She could not wait to reach there. Her body was trembling as she held her phone tightly.
When the taxi stopped in front of the house, she jumped out immediately. She ran into the compound without greeting anyone.
“Linda! Linda!” she shouted. No one answered. She entered the living room and froze when she saw blood stains on the floor. She ran to the bedroom and saw her daughter lying weakly on the bed, pale and bleeding. “Jesus Christ!” she screamed. “Who did this to you?” Linda opened her eyes weakly and whispered, “Mama Ajulu.” Her mother knelt beside her, crying. “You will not die, my daughter. I’m here now.”
She called the taxi driver inside and begged him to help her carry Linda. Together, they lifted her and rushed out. “Please, take us to the nearest hospital!” she shouted as they entered the car. The driver drove as fast as he could. Linda’s eyes were closing. Her mother kept touching her face, begging her to stay awake.
“Don’t sleep, my child. We are almost there,” she said. “You will be fine. Just hold on.” When they arrived at the hospital, nurses rushed out with a stretcher and carried Linda inside immediately.
The doctors took her straight into the emergency room. They placed her on oxygen and began to clean her wounds. Linda’s mother stood outside, weeping uncontrollably. After some minutes, one nurse came out and said, “Madam, she’s under intensive care now. Please calm down.” Linda’s mother nodded slowly and wiped her tears. “This people want to kill my daughter for me,” she said bitterly. “This will not happen. After this treatment, I will take my daughter home.” She sat down quietly, her heart filled with anger and pain.
