The Harvest Of Hardship - S01 E06

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 6

The slap from Aunt Clara did not make Seyi cry. Usually, when a person is hit very hard on the face, tears come to their eyes. It is a natural thing that the body does. But Seyi was not like most people anymore. He had been through too much pain for a few tears to fall. Instead of feeling sad, Seyi felt something very different. He felt a deep, biting cold start to grow inside his chest. It was a coldness that started at his heart and moved all the way down to his fingers and toes. He stood there in the kitchen for a long time. His cheek was bright red and it felt like it was on fire. But his eyes were like two pieces of dark glass. He looked at Aunt Clara, but he did not really see her. He looked at Tobi, but Tobi did not seem important anymore. The world around him seemed to slow down. He could hear the sound of the wind outside. He could hear the clicking of the clock on the wall. He could hear the sound of his own breathing.

Aunt Clara was still shouting, but her voice sounded far away. She was telling him that he was lucky to even have a roof over his head. She was saying that he should be grateful for every scrap of food he ate. Tobi was standing behind her, looking very pleased with himself. Tobi liked it when Seyi was in trouble. It made Tobi feel like a king. Tobi thought that because he was the one being served, he was the one with the power. But Seyi was starting to see things in a new way.

Seyi turned back to the stove. The blue flame he had worked so hard to fix was still burning. It was a beautiful, steady flame. Seyi took a deep breath. He picked up the small pot of water and placed it on the fire. He decided that he would do what they asked. He would cook the noodles for Tobi. But he would not do it like a servant who was afraid. He would do it like a master who knew exactly what he was doing.

As the water began to bubble and boil, Seyi reached into the cupboard. He found the noodles, but he did not just throw them into the pot. He remembered the many times he had gone to the market for Aunt Clara. Every time he went, he walked through the rows of people selling bright, colorful spices. He used to stop and close his eyes. He would smell the air. He learned the difference between the spicy peppers and the sweet herbs. He learned which smells made people feel hungry and which ones made them feel happy. He had no money to buy these spices for himself, but he had a very good memory. He had watched the women in the market mix their powders. He had seen how they used a little bit of this and a pinch of that to make a simple meal taste like a feast.

Seyi looked at the small jars of spices that Aunt Clara kept for special guests. She never used them for the family, and she definitely never used them for Seyi. But tonight, Seyi did not care about the rules. He took a tiny bit of yellow powder and a small shake of red pepper. He found a dried leaf that smelled like the forest after a heavy rain. He crushed the leaf between his fingers. He added everything to the pot. Tobi was sitting at the table, tapping his fingers. He was waiting for his food. He did not notice what Seyi was doing. He was too busy thinking about his games and his comfortable bed.

The smell began to fill the kitchen. It was a wonderful smell. It was warm and rich. It smelled better than anything Aunt Clara had ever cooked. Even Clara stopped her shouting for a moment. she sniffed the air and looked at the pot, but she did not say anything. She just walked out of the room to go and count her money in the bedroom.

When the noodles were finished, Seyi poured them into a clean bowl. He did not spill a single drop. He walked over to the table and set the bowl down in front of Tobi. Tobi looked at the food. It looked different. It looked better than usual. He took a big forkful and shoved it into his mouth. He ate greedily, like a hungry animal. His eyes grew wide as he tasted the spices. He had never eaten anything so good in his entire life. He finished the whole bowl in just a few minutes. He licked the sauce off his lips and leaned back in his chair.

See? You are good for something after all, Tobi smirked. He said it with a mean look on his face. He wanted to make sure Seyi knew that he was still just a worker. He wanted to remind Seyi that his only job was to make Tobi happy.

Seyi did not say anything. He did not smile, and he did not frown. He just picked up the empty bowl and walked back to the sink. He washed the bowl and dried it with a clean cloth. Inside his head, he was thinking. He realized that he had made Tobi happy with his skill. He had used his brain and his memory to create something. Tobi had the food, but Seyi had the knowledge. And knowledge was something that no one could take away with a slap.

The next day started like any other day. The sun was hot and the chores were many. But in the afternoon, something happened that changed things. Aunt Clara had to go to a meeting at the church. She was very busy and she was in a hurry. She put on her best dress and her biggest hat.

Seyi, I am leaving now, she shouted from the front door. Do not let Tobi get into any trouble. And Tobi, stay inside and study your books. I will be back before dinner.

She slammed the door and walked away. For the first time in a long time, the two boys were alone in the house. Seyi went to the backyard to start washing the heavy blankets. It was a hard job that took a lot of strength. Tobi stayed in the living room. For a while, it was very quiet. But then, Tobi started to feel hungry. He had been thinking about those noodles all day. He wanted more. He wanted to feel that wonderful taste again.

Tobi looked out the window and saw Seyi busy with the blankets. He thought to himself that he didn't need Seyi. He was a teenager now. He was tall and big. Surely he could boil a little bit of water. Surely he could make his own food. He walked into the kitchen and looked at the stove. He remembered how Seyi had turned the knobs. He remembered how the blue flame had appeared.

Tobi reached out his soft, shaking hand. He turned the gas on, but he turned it too far. He could hear the gas hissing loudly. He took a match and struck it. There was a loud sound as the flame jumped up. It was much bigger than the flame Seyi used. It was orange and angry. Tobi got scared and stepped back. He picked up the pot of water, but his hands were not strong. He had never practiced carrying heavy things. He had never learned how to be steady.

As he tried to put the pot on the fire, his foot slipped on a wet spot on the floor. The pot tipped over. The water splashed onto the stove, and the flame flared up toward the curtains. Tobi screamed. He dropped the pot and it hit the floor with a loud crash. The fire started to spread across the counter. It was moving toward the wooden cupboards.

Help! Seyi, help me! Tobi screamed. He did not know what to do. He stood there like a statue. He was paralyzed with fear. He could not move his legs. He could only watch as the smoke started to fill the room. He felt like he was going to die. He felt small and weak.

Seyi heard the scream from the backyard. He did not drop the blanket. He laid it down carefully and ran into the house. He did not scream. He did not panic. When he walked into the kitchen, he saw the fire and he saw Tobi shaking in the corner. Seyi moved like a shadow. He reached through the smoke and grabbed a heavy, damp cloth. He threw it over the flame on the counter. He reached down and turned off the gas with a firm hand. The hissing stopped. The big orange flame disappeared. The fire died out, leaving only a small trail of black smoke.

The kitchen was very quiet now. Tobi was still shaking. His face was white and his eyes were full of tears. He looked at the floor, where the water and the pot were lying. He looked at his own hands. They were trembling so much that he had to hide them behind his back.

I... I do not know how, Tobi whispered. His voice was very small. He sounded like a little child who was lost in the dark. He looked at Seyi with a look that was almost like a plea. He was waiting for Seyi to yell at him or to laugh at him.

Seyi looked at his cousin. He did not feel angry. He did not even feel happy that Tobi had failed. Instead, he felt a strange kind of pity. He saw that Tobi was like a bird in a cage. Tobi had everything, but he could do nothing. If the cage door was opened, Tobi would not even know how to fly. He was helpless in his own home.

That is because you never had to learn, Seyi said. His voice was calm. It was not mean, but it was very honest. He picked up the pot and put it back in the sink. He began to clean up the mess that Tobi had made.

That night, as Seyi lay on his thin mat on the floor, he could not sleep. He was thinking about what had happened in the kitchen. He realized something very important. He had spent years thinking that his chores were a punishment. He thought that carrying water and fixing the stove and cleaning the yard were things that made him less than Tobi. But now he saw the truth. Every chore was a lesson. Every hard job had given him a skill. He knew how to survive. He knew how to fix things. He knew how to stay calm when things went wrong.

Tobi was the one who was truly poor. Tobi had money and clothes and a soft bed, but he had no power over his own life. He was a slave to his own laziness. Seyi looked at his calloused hands in the moonlight. He realized that these hands were his greatest tools. He started looking at his chores not as burdens that pulled him down, but as steps that were helping him climb up. He was getting stronger every day. He was becoming a man who could handle anything the world threw at him.

But the peace did not last long. The next morning, Aunt Clara came home with a look on her face that made Seyi’s heart grow cold again. She did not look angry about the kitchen. Tobi had cleaned it up and lied to her, saying he just spilled some water. Clara looked excited. She had a new look in her eyes. It was a look of greed and a look of secrets.

She sat Tobi down at the table and began to whisper to him. Seyi was outside, but he could hear her through the open window. She was talking about a new plan. She was talking about a big school in the city. She said that she had found a way to make sure Tobi got the best grades and the best future, even if he did not study. And then she said something that made Seyi stop breathing for a second.

We have to make sure Seyi stays right where he is, Clara hissed. If he gets too smart, he will leave. And if he leaves, who will do all the work? Who will make sure you have everything you need? I have a plan to make sure he never passes that final exam. I have a plan to keep him here forever.

Seyi stood in the shadows of the garden. He felt the coldness in his chest turn into a hard, sharp edge. He knew that the battle was just beginning. Aunt Clara wanted to trap him in a cage of hardship. She wanted to steal his future to give it to her son. But Seyi was not the same boy who had arrived at her door years ago. He was a boy who knew how to start a fire and how to put one out.

What is Aunt Clara's dark plan to make Seyi fail? Will Tobi help his mother, or will he remember that Seyi saved his life from the fire? The harvest is coming, and it will be a harvest that no one in the village will ever forget.

Why did the slap from Aunt Clara make Seyi feel cold instead of making him cry?

Seyi used spices he learned about in the market to make the noodles. What does this tell us about how he learns?

Tobi tried to boil water and almost burned the house down. Do you think he learned a lesson, or will he stay lazy?

Seyi said Tobi is helpless because he "never had to" do anything. Do you agree that having everything done for you can make you weak?

What do you think Aunt Clara’s "new plan" is to make sure Seyi fails his exam?

Do not miss the next shocking episode!

The danger is growing! Aunt Clara is ready to do something terrible to stop Seyi from succeeding. But Seyi has discovered that his hard work has given him a secret power. Who will win this war of wills? Will the boy who can fix anything find a way to fix his own life?
