The Harvest Of Hardship - S01 E01

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 1

The sun had not even blinked over the horizon yet. The world outside was still wrapped in a deep, dark blue color. Most people in the village were still tucked away in their beds, dreaming of better days. But inside Aunt Clara’s house, there was no time for dreams. The air was cold, and the house was very quiet, except for the sound of Tobi’s soft breathing from the other room.

Suddenly, a splash of ice cold water hit Seyi’s face. He gasped, his eyes flying open in the darkness. He sat up quickly, his heart beating fast like a drum. Standing over him was Aunt Clara. She held an empty bowl in her hand, and her face was like a stone. She did not look sorry at all for waking him up in such a mean way.

"The drums are empty, Seyi," Clara said. Her voice was sharp, and it poked at him like a needle. "Do not sit there looking like a ghost. Go to the well and fetch water before it is time for school. If the drums are not full by the time I start cooking, you will not taste a single bite of food today."

Seyi shivered. The water was dripping down his neck and soaking into his thin shirt. He looked over at the corner where Tobi was sleeping. Tobi was wrapped up under a thick, warm duvet. He was snoring softly, looking like a little prince who didn't have a care in the world. Tobi did not have to wake up at 5:00 AM. Tobi did not have to feel the bite of the morning cold.

Seyi got up from his thin mat on the floor. His bones felt heavy, and his muscles were still sore from the scrubbing he did the night before. He walked outside into the early morning air. The ground was damp from the rain that had fallen yesterday. He found the big plastic bucket by the door. It was heavy even when it was empty.

He lifted the bucket and balanced it on his head. The hard plastic rim dug into his scalp, making him wince. He began the long walk to the village well. The path was narrow and full of stones that tripped his tired feet. Every step he took felt like a mountain he had to climb.

When he finally reached the well, there were already some older boys there. These boys were bigger than Seyi, and they were often very mean. They saw Seyi coming with his big bucket and started to point and laugh. They knew Seyi was the boy who lived with Aunt Clara. They knew he was the one who did all the work while Tobi played.

"Look who is here!" one of the boys shouted. "It is the little slave boy. Where is your brother, the Prince? Is he still sleeping in his warm bed while you do his work?"

The other boys laughed loudly. "Maybe the Prince is too busy eating cake!" another one teased. "Why are you doing all the work, Seyi? Are you a boy or a donkey?"

Seyi said nothing. He kept his head down, but his ears were red with shame. He didn't want to fight. He didn't have the strength to argue. He just wanted to fill his bucket and go back. He tied the long, rough rope to his bucket and lowered it into the dark hole of the well.

The well was very deep. He could hear the splash of the bucket hitting the water far below. Then, he began to pull. He hauled the rope up, hand over hand. The rope was old and scratchy. It rubbed against his skin, making his palms turn red. He pulled and pulled until his breath came in short gasps. He could feel the skin on his hands starting to break. Small drops of blood began to smear on the rope, but he did not stop. He couldn't stop. If he went back with an empty bucket, Aunt Clara would be even more angry.

Finally, the bucket reached the top. It was brimming with water. He carefully lifted it onto his head. The weight was immense. It felt like his neck might snap under the pressure. He began the slow walk back to the house, trying his best not to spill a single drop.

When he returned to the kitchen, the sun was just starting to peek over the trees. The house was now awake. He saw Tobi sitting at the table. Tobi was not eating dry yam today. No, Tobi had a plate in front of him with a perfectly fried egg. It was the only egg in the house. The smell of the golden yolk and the crispy edges made Seyi’s stomach growl so loudly he thought everyone could hear it.

Aunt Clara was standing by the door, watching Seyi as he emptied the water into the big storage drums. She saw his shaking hands. She saw the way his legs trembled as he moved back and forth to the well for more trips. She saw the blood on his palms. Instead of feeling sad for him, a small smile played on her lips. She liked seeing him struggle. She thought she was breaking his spirit. She thought she was making him weak.

But as Seyi wiped the sweat and the bit of cold water from his brow, he noticed something strange. He looked at the heavy bucket in his hand. Yesterday, this bucket felt like it was made of lead. Yesterday, he could barely lift it. But today, even though his hands were hurting, the bucket felt just a little bit lighter.

He didn't realize it, but his body was changing. Because of all the hard work Clara gave him, his muscles were hardening. He was becoming stronger, even though he was being fed so little. His heart was also becoming like a shield. Every mean word Clara said made him a little bit tougher on the inside.

However, as he stood there in the kitchen, a cold fear gripped him. He looked at his bleeding hands and quickly hid them behind his back. He thought about his father. His father was far away, working hard to send money home for Seyi’s care. His father thought Seyi was being treated like a son.

Seyi knew one thing for sure: his father could never find out about any of this. If his father knew how Clara was treating him, he would come back in a rage. And Seyi was terrified of what Clara might do if she was caught. He had to keep the secret. He had to bear the harvest of hardship all by himself.

But how long could a small boy keep such a big secret? And why was the bucket feeling lighter? Was it just his muscles, or was something else happening to Seyi?

Why do you think Seyi is so determined to hide the truth from his father?

Do you think the older boys at the well are right to call Tobi a "Prince"?

Is Aunt Clara’s plan to "break" Seyi actually working, or is it making him stronger?

What do you think would happen if Seyi's father suddenly showed up at the house?

Do you want to know what happens next?

The story is just getting started! Seyi is getting stronger, but Aunt Clara has more traps waiting for him. Will he be able to keep his secret, or will the hardship become too much to bear?
