The Mystery Behind The Dark Water - S01 E22

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 22

The night was very beautiful but it was also very sad. The Great River of Omoni was no longer a black and stinking mess. Because of the brave choice Jidenna had made, the water was now as clear as glass. Under the bright silver moon, the river was shimmering like millions of tiny diamonds. It was so pretty that it looked like the stars had fallen out of the sky and were now swimming in the water. But on the green grass of the riverbank, there was no joy. A large circle of villagers stood very still. They were not looking at the diamond water. They were looking at Jidenna. The boy who had saved them all was lying as still as a stone. His yellow shirt was wet and dark. His eyes were closed. He did not look like he was breathing.

Amara was kneeling right beside him. Her knees were in the mud, but she did not care. She held Jidenna’s cold hand in her own small hands. Her tears were falling fast. They looked like little pearls dropping onto Jidenna’s pale face. She felt like her heart was breaking into a thousand pieces. She had been Jidenna’s friend when everyone else was mean to him. She had believed in him when the Chief called him a witch. Now, the village was safe, the water was clear, and the truth was out. But her best friend was not moving.

"Please wake up, hero," Amara whispered. Her voice was very small and very shaky. "You did it, Jidenna. You saved us. You saved the Chief. You saved the whole village. You cannot leave me now. We were supposed to go fishing in the clear water together. Please, Jidenna, just open your eyes one more time."

The villagers were crying too. The blacksmith, the market women, and even the tough guards had tears on their faces. They felt very bad for how they had treated Jidenna. They realized that they had been blind. They had followed a bad leader and ignored a good boy. They stood in the moonlight and prayed to the spirits of the river. They wanted a miracle. They wanted the boy with the heart of gold to come back to them. But the silence on the grass was very heavy. It felt like the night was never going to end.

Suddenly, a long shadow moved across the grass. It did not come from the village and it did not come from the river. It came from the edge of the Forbidden Forest. The villagers turned their heads to look. Out of the dark trees stepped a woman. She was wearing old, dusty clothes made of bark and leaves. Her hair was long and white, and she carried a wooden staff. It was the Outcast woman. She was the one who lived in the forest and knew all the old magic. Usually, the villagers were afraid of her. They thought she was scary. But tonight, they did not run away. They moved aside to let her pass. They felt that she was the only one who could help.

The Outcast woman walked slowly. Her feet made no sound on the grass. She did not look at the Chief, who was still coughing and crying nearby. She went straight to Jidenna. She looked down at his face with eyes that were very wise and very kind. She did not look like a monster. She looked like a mother who had lost her way and finally found her home. She reached into a small bag at her waist and pulled out a special leaf. The leaf was a deep purple color with bright green veins. It smelled like the earth and the rain. It looked like it was glowing with its own tiny light.

The Outcast woman knelt down on the other side of Jidenna. She looked at Amara and gave a tiny, sad smile. Then, she placed the special leaf right in the center of Jidenna’s chest, right over his heart.

"He gave his heart to save his enemy," the Outcast woman said. Her voice was deep and it sounded like the humming of the earth. "That is the greatest magic of all. The river was hungry for justice, and it was hungry for a life to pay for the sins of the past. But the river has seen what this boy did. It has seen the gold in his soul. The river has accepted the payment of his love. It does not want his breath anymore."

The villagers held their breath. The purple leaf on Jidenna’s chest began to pulse. It gave off a soft, warm light that matched the shimmer of the diamond river. The light moved from the leaf into Jidenna’s skin. It moved up to his face and down to his toes. The coldness started to go away. The pale color of his skin began to turn back to a healthy brown. Amara felt Jidenna’s hand get warm in hers. She felt a tiny squeeze from his fingers.

Then, it happened. Jidenna’s chest gave a big heave. He took a long, deep breath of the cool night air. It sounded like the wind through the palm trees. His eyelashes moved. Slowly, very slowly, Jidenna’s eyes fluttered open. At first, they were blurry and confused. He saw the moon. He saw the white hair of the Outcast woman. He saw the crying face of Amara.

"Amara?" Jidenna whispered. His voice was very dry and very weak, but it was the most beautiful sound Amara had ever heard.

"I am here, Jidenna! I am right here!" Amara cried. She laughed through her tears and hugged him tightly. She was so happy she felt like she was going to burst.

The villagers let out a giant cheer. They jumped up and down. They hugged each other. They shouted Jidenna’s name to the sky. "The hero is awake! The king has returned!" they yelled. Even the guards were smiling. The Chief, who was sitting in the mud, looked at Jidenna and bowed his head. He was too ashamed to speak, but he was glad the boy was alive. He knew that Jidenna was the only reason he was still breathing.

Jidenna sat up slowly with the help of the Outcast woman. He felt a bit dizzy, but he felt a great peace in his soul. He looked toward the Great River. He saw the diamond water dancing under the moon. He saw how clear and beautiful it was. He saw the colorful fish jumping out of the water, celebrating the end of the curse. The bad smell was gone. The black soot was gone. The river looked like a dream. Jidenna smiled. It was the biggest and most honest smile he had ever given. He had done it. He had fixed the river. He had saved his home.

"It is beautiful," Jidenna said softly. He looked at the Outcast woman. "Thank you for the leaf."

The Outcast woman nodded. "You saved yourself, Jidenna. The leaf only reminded your body that it wanted to stay. But the work is not finished. The river is clear, but the river is also changed. It has a memory now. It remembers the boy who jumped into the dark."

For a few minutes, everything was perfect. The people were happy. The water was pretty. The hero was alive. It felt like the end of a long, scary story where everyone lives happily ever after. But the mystery behind the dark water was not quite finished. The spirits of the river were not done speaking to the people of Omoni.

Suddenly, the air became very still. The wind stopped blowing. The leaves on the trees stopped rustling. The villagers stopped their cheering. Everyone felt a strange tingle on their skin. It felt like the air was full of tiny sparks of electricity. Jidenna stood up, leaning on Amara for support. He looked at the water.

The diamond river was no longer just shimmering. It began to hum. It was a very strange, low tune. It did not sound like splashing water. It sounded like a thousand voices singing deep underground. It was a sound that was very old and very powerful. It was a melody that felt like it was coming from the rocks and the mud and the very bottom of the deep. The tune was so low that you could feel it in your bones. You could feel it in your teeth.

As the humming grew louder, the water began to vibrate. Small circles appeared on the surface of the clear river. It looked like the water was boiling, but it was not hot. It was a cool, blue energy. The light from the moon seemed to get brighter, focusing on the center of the riverbed. The sound was so eerie and so strange that everyone’s hair began to stand on end. Even the big, strong blacksmith looked scared.

"What is that sound?" Amara whispered, moving closer to Jidenna.

"The river is singing," the Outcast woman said. But she did not look happy now. She looked very serious. She gripped her wooden staff tightly. Her eyes were fixed on the middle of the shimmering water.

The tune became more clear. It was a song of the past, but it was also a song of the future. It was a song that talked about kings and traitors. It was a song that talked about the heart of gold. But there was a new part to the song. It was a part that sounded like a warning. The water began to swirl in the center, not in a scary whirlpool, but in a slow and beautiful dance. A giant shape began to rise from the middle of the river. It was not made of mud and it was not made of soot. It was made of pure, white light.

The shape grew taller and taller. It looked like a giant figure standing on top of the water. It had no face, but it had a presence that made everyone want to kneel. The humming tune reached a very high note that made the glass in the village huts shiver. The villagers were terrified. They didn't know if this was a gift or a punishment. They had never seen the river act this way. They had broken the curse, but they had woken up something much bigger and much older than the Chief’s lies.

Jidenna stepped forward to the very edge of the grass. He felt the humming moving through his feet. He felt the blue stone in his hand start to vibrate along with the song of the river. He was not scared, but he was very curious. He felt like the river was trying to show him one last thing. He felt like the mystery was about to reveal its true heart.

The giant figure of light raised a hand. The humming stopped suddenly, and the silence that followed was even scarier than the sound. The shimmering water became as still as a mirror. In that mirror, the villagers did not see their own reflections. They saw something else. They saw a vision of a time that was yet to come. They saw a new danger rising from the hills beyond the village. They saw that the peace they had just found was only the beginning of a much bigger adventure.

The hair on Jidenna’s neck was standing straight up. He looked at Amara and then back at the figure of light. The river was beautiful, but it was also full of secrets that were still hidden. The humming started again, but this time it was a different tune. it was a tune that sounded like a call to battle.

What was the river trying to tell them? Who was the figure made of light? And what was the new danger hiding in the shadows of the hills? The village of Omoni had survived the dark water, but they were about to find out that some mysteries are deeper than any river.

The suspense was so thick that no one dared to move a muscle. The diamond water was glowing, the figure of light was waiting, and the song of the river was echoing through the night. The journey of the heart of gold was not over. It was just changing its path.

The Outcast woman saved Jidenna with a special leaf. Do you think she is a secret protector of the village, even though they were mean to her?

Jidenna woke up and smiled at the beauty of the river. If you were Jidenna, would you be happy or would you still be scared of the Chief?

The river is humming a "strange, low tune." What do you think the song is about? Is it a song of joy or a song of warning?

The water formed a giant figure of light. Who do you think this figure is? Is it a god, a king, or the spirit of the river itself?
