The Letter From Thieves, Episode 4
Stephanie returned to the mansion early in the morning. She walked through the estate quietly and kept looking around to be sure no one was watching her. When she got to the gate of the house, she saw Mark standing outside as if he had been waiting for her. He opened the gate for her and welcomed her inside. She felt relieved. She believed everything had been settled. In her heart, she thanked God that the armed robbers did not harm her husband. She stepped into the living room and looked around. Nothing was missing. Nothing was broken. The house looked peaceful. She smiled because she believed peace had returned to her marriage and her new home.
“I’m sorry I left you alone last night. I was just too scared. I could not control myself,” Stephanie said.
She sat down. “I did not even sleep. The cold was too much. I kept thinking about you. I was afraid those people would harm you. Thank God you gave them the money and they left. Money is nothing compared to our lives. I’m just happy you are safe,” she continued. She did not know that her husband was looking at her with a different mind. She did not know danger was quietly waiting for her inside that same house.
Mark smiled and acted normal. “It’s okay. I understand why you ran away. Anyone in your position would have done the same. What matters is that everything is fine now. The armed robbers collected the N10 million and promised never to disturb us again. This house is safe. You can relax. No one will come here again,” he said. Inside his heart, he was not thinking about peace. He was thinking about survival. He was thinking about the seven days warning. He knew the only way to save himself was to fulfil the cult rule.
Throughout that day, Stephanie moved around the house happily. She arranged the bedroom again and prepared food in the kitchen. She even played music softly as she cooked. She was trying to forget the fear of the previous night. In her mind, the worst had already passed. She believed her husband had protected her. She believed she was lucky to have married a man who could handle dangerous people. She had no idea that the real danger was not outside the mansion but inside it. She had no idea that her husband belonged to a secret cult. She had no idea that plans were already being made against her.
Later that afternoon, when Stephanie went upstairs to rest, Mark quietly stepped outside to make a phone call. He did not want her to hear anything. He scrolled through his phone and called the cult leader.
“She is back home,” Mark said immediately the call was answered. “My wife returned this morning. She believes everything is settled. She does not suspect anything. Everything is under control.” He spoke in a low voice and kept looking around to be sure Stephanie was not nearby.
The cult leader laughed softly from the other end. “That is good. We told you we will return. Tonight, we are coming back. When we arrive, you must present your wife to us the same way we presented ours to you. You have enjoyed the benefits of this cult for years. You became rich because you obeyed the rules. Now, it is your turn to obey fully. Do not play games with us. Do not try to hide her again. If you fail this time, you know the consequences. Poverty and death are waiting for you,” the leader said.
“There will be no problem. Everything is ready. She is here and she does not suspect anything. When you come tonight, I will present her. I will not disappoint the cult. I value my life and my wealth,” he said. After the call ended, he stood quietly for some minutes. He knew what he was about to do was wicked, but fear of losing his wealth was stronger than his conscience. He told himself that once this night passed, everything would return to normal.
That evening, Stephanie prepared a special dinner for her husband. She wanted to celebrate their safety. “I’m just happy that all the trouble is over. We can finally enjoy this house in peace,” she said as they ate together. Mark nodded and pretended to agree. After dinner, they went upstairs to their bedroom. Stephanie felt tired because she had not slept well the previous night. She changed into her nightwear and lay on the bed peacefully.
“I’m grateful nothing happened to us. God truly saved this marriage,” she said before closing her eyes.
Mark lay beside her but he could not sleep. He kept staring at the ceiling. He knew what was coming. He knew that by midnight, his cult members would arrive. Stephanie slept deeply, unaware of what her husband had planned. She had no idea that the same people she thought were armed robbers were actually her husband’s friends. She had no idea that she was about to be betrayed. The house was quiet. The estate was silent. Then, at exactly 12am, there was a loud knock on the door downstairs. The cult members had arrived.
