The Mystery Behind The Dark Water - S01 E20

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 20

The night over the village of Omoni had reached its scariest moment. The wind was no longer just a breeze. It was a loud whistle that sounded like the trees were crying. The giant crown made of water was still spinning high in the air, but the color was a muddy, angry grey. On the riverbank, the people were frozen in fear. They saw the black water reaching up like a hungry ghost to pull Chief Obina into the deep. The Chief was the man who had lied to everyone. He was the man who had let Jidenna’s father fall. He was a man who had done many bad things. But as he was about to disappear under the waves, Jidenna did something that nobody expected.

Jidenna did not stay on the safe, dry land. He did not listen to the villagers who were shouting for the river to take the bad man away. He looked at the Chief’s hand, which was slipping away into the dark foam. Jidenna felt a strange heat in his heart. It was not the heat of anger. It was a warmth that felt like a hug from his mother. He realized that if he let the Chief drown, the hate in the village would never end. The river would stay black because the people would still have darkness in their souls. To save the village, he had to be better than the man who had hurt him.

With a loud cry, Jidenna jumped. He did not just reach out his hand. He threw his whole body into the swirling blackness of the Great River. The water was cold, colder than ice. It felt like a thousand needles poking his skin. The black soot was thick and stinking, and it tried to get into his eyes and mouth. The current was very fast, spinning like a giant top. It grabbed Jidenna and tried to pull him away from the Chief. But Jidenna was a boy with a mission. He kicked his legs with all his might. He reached through the inky waves until his fingers closed around the Chief’s wet robes.

As soon as Jidenna touched the black water with the true intent to save his enemy, something miraculous happened. It was like a sun was waking up inside the boy’s body. A golden light began to glow from the center of Jidenna’s chest. It was not the light from the blue stone in his pocket. This was a new light. It was the light of a heart of gold that had finally found its courage. The light grew brighter and warmer. It spread out from Jidenna like a golden blanket.

When the black water touched this golden light, the most amazing thing happened. The ink disappeared. The soot vanished. The stinking mud turned into crystal clear water. Right where Jidenna was swimming, a circle of pure, clean liquid appeared. It looked like a window of light in the middle of a dark room. The curse was breaking! The river was reacting to the choice Jidenna had made. By choosing to save the person who had ruined his life, Jidenna was showing the river that the blood of the traitor was finally washed clean by the power of love.

The villagers saw the golden glow from the bank. They saw the black river turning clear around the two figures. They stopped their shouting and their angry chanting. A deep silence fell over the square. They realized they were watching a boy become a king. They were watching a miracle that would be talked about for a hundred years. Amara stood at the edge, her hands over her mouth. She could see Jidenna’s head and the Chief’s shoulder in the middle of the golden glow.

But the struggle was not over. Even though the water was turning clear, it was still very heavy and very fast. The river was like a giant animal that did not want to lose its prize. Chief Obina was a big man, and his wet clothes were like heavy stones pulling him down. He was not helping. He was too scared and too weak to swim. He was just a dead weight in Jidenna’s arms. Jidenna was only a young boy. His muscles were starting to ache. His lungs felt like they were on fire because he needed to breathe.

The current pulled them further away from the bridge. They were being dragged toward the middle of the river where the water was the deepest. The golden light was still shining, but it was flickering like a candle in the wind. Jidenna tried to pull the Chief toward the shore, but the river pushed them back. Every time Jidenna took a stroke, the waves crashed over his head, forcing him to swallow the clear but cold water.

"Hold on!" Amara screamed from the bank. She tried to reach out with a long stick, but they were too far away.

Jidenna felt his strength fading. His arms felt like they were made of heavy lead. His legs were shaking, and he could hardly kick anymore. The Chief’s head dipped under the water, and Jidenna had to use all his remaining energy to pull him back up. The golden light coming from his chest began to grow dim. The black water outside the golden circle was pressing in, trying to swallow the light. It felt like the darkness was fighting back, angry that its power was being taken away.

Jidenna looked at the sky. He could see the stars through the clear water when he went under. He thought of his father. He thought of the village. He realized that he might not make it back to the shore. He was giving everything he had to save a man who did not deserve it. But he knew that even if he sank, the river would at least be clear for the people. He gave one last, desperate pull, trying to move the Chief just a few more inches toward the land.

But the river gave a final, powerful heave. A giant wave rose up from the center of the deep. It was not a wave of water, but a wave of pure force. It hit Jidenna and the Chief with the strength of a falling mountain. Jidenna’s grip began to slip. His fingers were tired and numb from the cold. He felt the Chief sliding away from him.

"No!" Jidenna thought, but he had no breath left to speak.

The golden light gave one last, bright flash and then it went out. The circle of clear water stayed, but the two of them were no longer swimming. They were sinking. The weight of the Chief and the power of the current were too much for one small boy. Jidenna felt his eyes closing. He felt the water surrounding him like a cold, dark blanket. He saw the surface of the river getting further and further away. The beautiful white light of the stars was disappearing.

The villagers on the bank let out a cry of horror. They saw the golden light vanish. They saw the two heads disappear under the surface. The river was quiet now, but Jidenna and the Chief were nowhere to be seen. The clear water was still there, like a silent mirror, but the hero of Omoni was gone.

Amara ran into the water, calling Jidenna’s name, but the guards had to hold her back. The water was still too dangerous. The silence that followed was the scariest part of the whole night. The mystery had reached its most painful moment. The boy who had the heart of gold had given everything to break the curse, but it looked like the river had taken him as the final price.

Deep under the water, Jidenna felt himself drifting. He felt a strange peace. He had done what was right. He had fixed the mistake of his ancestors. But as he sank deeper, a hand reached out from the shadows of the riverbed. It was not the hand of a human. It was a hand made of pure, white light.

The suspense was so thick it felt like it was breaking the hearts of everyone watching. Was this the end of Jidenna? Had the true king died to save a traitor? Or was there one last secret hidden at the bottom of the Dark Water?

Do you think it was fair for Jidenna to lose his strength after doing something so good? Why do you think the light went out?

If Jidenna does not come back, who will lead the village of Omoni now that the Chief is also gone?

What do you think the hand of white light at the bottom of the river is? Could it be Zaki or the ghost of Ekene?
