The Mystery Behind The Dark Water - S01 E18
The Mystery Behind The Dark Water - S01 E18
Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 18
The village square of Omoni was as quiet as a graveyard. The only sound was the heavy breathing of the people and the soft humming of the blue stone in Jidenna’s hand. The huge crown made of clear water was still spinning over the river. It was so bright that you could see every little detail on the ground. You could see the tiny ants crawling on the wood of the huts. You could see the tears drying on the faces of the children. But most of all, everyone was looking at Chief Obina. The Chief was no longer the big, scary man who gave orders. He was a small, broken man shivering in the mud. He had lost his sword. He had lost his guards. He had lost the respect of every single person in the village.
Jidenna stood over him. The boy’s yellow shirt was dirty, but he looked like a prince. The clear water shield had vanished, but the power was still there. Jidenna looked down at the Chief. He did not look at him with anger. He looked at him with a heart that was tired of all the lies. He looked at the Chief and saw the man who had let his father, Zaki, fall into the deep. He saw the man who had called him a witch and tried to turn his friends against him.
"The river is waiting, Chief," Jidenna said. His voice was very soft, but it carried to every corner of the square. "The water will not turn white until the truth is told. You can try to hide, but the river knows your heart. Tell the people what you did on the bridge five years ago. Tell them the truth about my father."
The Chief looked at the villagers. He saw the blacksmith, the market women, and the elders. He saw that no one was going to help him. He looked at the giant water crown that was spinning faster and faster. He felt the cold air coming off the river. He knew he had no more places to run. He knew that the magic of the blue stone was stronger than any lie he could invent. He began to cry, but they were not the tears of a sorry man. They were the tears of a man who was scared..
"I did it!" the Chief finally screamed. He fell forward, pressing his face into the wet sand. "I did it all! I pushed Jidenna’s father because I wanted to stay Chief! Zaki knew the truth about the royal blood. He knew that my family had stolen the crown a long time ago. He was going to tell the village elders at the Great Hut. I couldn't let him do that! I couldn't let him take away my power!"
The villagers gasped so loud it sounded like a giant wave hitting the shore. They couldn't believe their ears. They had loved Zaki. They had missed him for five years. And all this time, the man they called their leader was the one who had caused his death.
"I was on the bridge with him," the Chief continued, his voice shaking. "He slipped, and I had the chance to pull him up. I reached out, but then I stopped. I watched him fall. I watched the black water take him. And then, I took his necklace so I could have his power. I was the one who made the river turn black with my sin! But I was too cowardly to admit it. I blamed the curse on the boy! I told everyone Jidenna was a witch to hide my own evil! I wanted you to hate him so you wouldn't see me!"
As soon as the words left the Chief’s mouth, the air in Omoni changed. It became very, very cold. It felt like the middle of the rainy season in the middle of the night. The torches held by the guards began to flicker and go out one by one. The only light left was the golden glow from Jidenna’s stone. And then, a new sound started. It was not the sound of the wind or the river. It was the sound of weeping. It sounded like a thousand voices were crying at the same time. It was the sound of the river’s sadness for all the years of lies.
The villagers looked at the Chief with pure disgust. They were no longer afraid of him. They were angry. They felt foolish for believing his stories. They felt bad for how they had treated Jidenna. They saw that the real monster was not the boy with the birthmark. The real monster was the man who had sat on the throne and lied to their faces.
"You are the curse!" a young man shouted from the crowd.
"You are the darkness in Omoni!" a woman yelled, pointing her finger.
"You killed a good man for a piece of gold!" the elders cried out.
The Chief tried to crawl away. He wanted to get to the forest. He wanted to hide in the Cave of Echoes, but he didn't know the cave had already collapsed. He was trapped between the angry people and the roaring river. He reached out his hand to grab the fish tooth necklace that was still lying in the mud. He thought that if he could just hold it, he might have some protection. But as his fingers touched the bone, the necklace shattered into dust. It was gone forever.
Suddenly, the Great River reacted. The black water, which had been pulling back, suddenly surged forward. It did not come as a flood to drown the village. it came as a long, liquid arm. The water rose up from the bank like a giant snake. It was dark and thick, and it moved with a purpose. It ignored Jidenna. It ignored Amara. It ignored the villagers. It went straight for Chief Obina.
The liquid arm of the river reached out and grabbed the Chief’s legs. The Chief let out a high-pitched scream of terror. The water was cold and heavy. It wrapped around his ankles like iron chains. He tried to kick. He tried to claw at the ground with his fingernails. But the river was too strong. It was pulling him toward the deep. It was the river’s way of taking back the debt that was owed for Zaki’s life.
"No! Please! Jidenna, help me!" the Chief begged. He looked at the boy he had tried to kill. He looked for mercy in the eyes of the child he had called a witch.
Jidenna stood there. He did not move to stop the river, but he did not look happy either. He knew that the river was doing what was right. He knew that the balance of Omoni was being fixed. The black water was taking the man who had brought the darkness. The weeping sound in the air grew louder and louder, and the giant water crown began to descend toward the Chief.
The villagers watched in silence. They saw the water pulling the Chief closer and closer to the edge. The Chief’s fingers were digging into the mud, leaving long marks in the sand. He was crying and screaming, but no one moved to save him. They knew that this was the judgment of the Dark Water. They knew that the mystery was finally ending, and the truth was claiming its prize.
The water was now up to the Chief’s waist. He was being pulled into the swirling whirlpool under the bridge. The giant water crown was right above his head, spinning like a wheel of destiny. The air was so cold that the breath of the villagers looked like white smoke. The suspense was so high that it felt like the whole world was holding its breath.
Jidenna raised the blue stone one last time. The light from the stone hit the water, and for a split second, the river turned a brilliant, blinding white. The Chief gave one last, long scream,
The river began to settle. The giant crown turned into a soft mist that rained down on the village like cool, clean water. The weeping sound stopped, and a peaceful silence returned to Omoni. But the mystery was not over yet. Jidenna looked at the river and saw something floating on the surface.
The Chief finally told the truth, but only because he was scared. Do you think his confession counts if he was forced into it?
The villagers called the Chief the "curse." Do you think the black water will go away now that he is gone?
Jidenna didn't try to save the Chief. Was that a mean thing to do, or was it just justice?
What do you think is floating on the water now? Could it be something belonging to Zaki or the Chief?
