How My Valentine Went
The noise from the helicopter was like a thousand drums beating at the same time.
The giant spotlight was so bright that Leo felt like he was standing on the surface of the sun. The wind from the spinning blades was making the river go crazy. Waves were splashing over the sides of the small wooden boat, and Leo’s clothes were getting even wetter. He looked at the tiny black chip in his hand. This little piece of plastic was the reason he was in so much trouble. It was the reason he had jumped off a bridge. It was the reason a big gun was pointed at his chest.
Leo looked up at the helicopter. He could see Viktor standing in the doorway with the heavy gun. He could see the gold logo of Chief Benson shining in the light. He looked at Mrs. Adele. She was trembling and her face was full of fear. She had no more tricks. She had no more clever things to say. They were caught. They were like two small ants under a giant boot.
In that moment, Leo felt something change inside his mind. He realized that this Valentine’s Day was never really about the red rose. It was not about the expensive dinner or the diamonds or the fur coats. It was not even about the heart break he felt when Maya laughed at him. This whole night was a test. It was a test to see what kind of man he was. Was he a man who would give up when things got scary? Or was he a man who would stand up for what was right?
Leo looked at the chip one more time. He knew he had to do something. He could not just sit there and wait for the boat to sink. He saw the boat’s old radio sitting on a small shelf near the seat. It was a dusty black box with a silver microphone. He reached out and grabbed it. His hands were still shaking from the cold, but his mind was getting very clear. He pressed the button on the side of the microphone.
"Chief Benson! Can you hear me?" Leo shouted into the radio. His voice was loud and it echoed over the sound of the engine.
The booming voice from the helicopter speaker stopped counting. There was a long pause. Then the Chief spoke again. "I hear you, delivery boy. Are you ready to give me what I want? Or do you want to see if you can swim as well as you can jump?"
Leo took a deep breath. He knew he was about to tell a very big lie, but it was the only way to save their lives. "Chief! I have the evidence right here in my hand! But you should know something. I am a librarian. I know how information works.
Before I met you on the bridge, I connected this chip to my phone. I set up a special program. If you fire that gun, or if this boat sinks, or if my heart stops beating, this evidence goes live to the police server instantly! Every secret you have will be on the computer of every police officer in the city in one second!"
It was a total bluff. A bluff is a trick where you pretend to have something you do not really have. Leo had no such program. He had no connection to a police server. He was just a man with a piece of plastic in a wet boat.
Above them, the helicopter seemed to wobble. It drifted slightly to the left. The Chief was silent. Leo could imagine the rich man’s face turning pale inside the cockpit. The Chief was a man who loved power, but he was also a man who was very afraid of losing it. He knew that if the police got those files, his life of luxury would be over forever.
"You are lying!" the Chief’s voice boomed, but it did not sound as loud or as confident as before. "You are just a librarian. You don't know how to do something like that."
"Try me!" Leo shouted back into the radio. "Do you want to take that chance, Chief? Do you want to bet your whole empire that I am lying? If you kill us, you go to jail. If you let us go, you still have a chance to run. What is it going to be?"
The wind from the helicopter continued to whip the water, but the gun in Viktor’s hand lowered just a little bit. The Chief was thinking. He was a businessman, and he was weighing the risks. Finally, the helicopter began to rise higher into the sky.
The bright spotlight stayed on the boat, but the helicopter started to move away toward the city.
"This isn't over, Leo!" the Chief’s voice came over the speaker one last time. "I will be watching you. If I see one bit of that data on the internet, you are a dead man."
The helicopter flew away, the thumping sound getting quieter and quieter until it was just a hum in the distance. The bright light disappeared, and the river was dark again. The only sound was the soft splashing of the waves against the boat.
Mrs. Adele let out a long breath. She slumped down against the side of the boat.
"That was... that was incredible, Leo. I can't believe he fell for that. You saved us."
Leo put the radio microphone back on the shelf. He was still wet and cold, but he felt a strange sense of strength. He looked at Mrs. Adele. She was looking at the shore, her eyes searching for a place to hide.
"We need to get to the city," Mrs. Adele said. "I have a safe house near the park. We can go there and hide until my lawyers can figure out a way to use this chip without the Chief finding us."
Leo shook his head. "No. We don't need to run anymore. Running is what he wants us to do. He wants us to be scared and hide in the shadows so he can hunt us down one by one."
"Then what do you want to do?" Mrs. Adele asked. She looked confused.
"We need to go back to the restaurant," Leo said. His voice was firm. "We need to go back to where this all started. The Chief thinks he is safe because he has the guards and the money. But everyone saw what happened tonight. Everyone saw him call me a beggar. Everyone saw Maya betray me. We need to show the truth to the people while they are still watching."
Mrs. Adele looked at him with surprise.
"You want to go back there? Into the lion's den?"
"Yes," Leo replied. "The truth is only powerful when people see it. If we hide it in a safe house, it dies. We go back, and we finish this."
Mrs. Adele looked at the young man. He didn't look like the shy librarian she had met a few hours ago. He looked like a leader. She picked up the oars and began to row toward the shore. "Okay, Leo. We do it your way."
They reached the shore a few minutes later. They climbed out of the boat and scrambled up the muddy bank. The city was still busy with people celebrating Valentine’s Day, but the streets near the river were quiet. They found a taxi and Leo told the driver to go as fast as he could toward his neighborhood. He needed to get some dry clothes and his laptop before they went back to the Gilded Lily restaurant.
As the taxi sped through the streets, Leo looked out the window. He saw the couples walking hand in hand. He saw the red heart balloons and the flower shops. It all felt like a different world now. He felt like he had lived a hundred years in just one night.
When they turned onto the street where Leo lived, he saw something that made his heart stop. His apartment building was a small, old brick building at the end of a quiet road. It was not fancy, but it was his home. It was where he kept his books and his memories.
But there was someone standing in front of it.
The taxi slowed down as it approached the building. Leo saw a figure standing on the docks right next to the entrance. The streetlights were dim, but he recognized the white fur coat immediately. It was Maya.
She was not crying now. She did not look scared. She looked angry and very dangerous. In her hand, she was holding a large, red metal can. It was a gasoline can. She was unscrewing the cap, and the smell of fuel was already filling the air.
Leo watched in horror as Maya began to pour the liquid all over the wooden docks and the front door of his building. She was standing right where his life used to be. She looked up and saw the taxi. She didn't run away. She just stood there, holding a small lighter in her other hand. The flame was tiny, but in the dark night, it looked like a giant threat.
Leo realized that Maya was not just a girl who wanted money. She was a girl who wanted to destroy everything he had because he had ruined her chance at a rich life. She was ready to burn his whole world down.
The taxi came to a stop. Leo opened the door, his heart racing. He looked at Maya. He looked at the gasoline. He looked at the lighter in her hand. The suspense was so heavy it felt like the air was made of lead.
"Stop!" Leo shouted.
Maya looked at him and smiled. It was a smile that promised fire.
Do you think Leo’s bluff about the police server was the smartest move he has made so far? What would have happened if the Chief didn't believe him?
Why do you think Leo wants to go back to the restaurant instead of hiding? Is he being brave or just reckless?
Maya is holding a gasoline can at Leo’s apartment. Do you think she is acting on her own, or did the Chief send her to destroy Leo’s home?
If Maya drops that lighter, Leo loses everything he owns. Is the microchip worth the loss of his home?
How do you think Mrs. Adele will react to seeing Maya trying to burn down Leo’s building?
The fire is about to start! Leo saved his life on the river, but now he might lose his home on the docks. Maya has gone from a greedy girlfriend to a dangerous arsonist! Can Leo stop her before she strikes the light?
