How My Valentine Went

The night air was very cold as Leo ran toward the bridge. The wind was blowing hard, and it felt like tiny needles hitting his face. Far below the bridge, the water of the river was dark and deep. The city lights were reflecting on the surface of the water, making it look like the river was full of glowing stars that were shaking in the cold. Everything was very quiet, except for the sound of the wind and the distant hum of cars. Leo’s heart was beating like a drum. He did not know what he would find at the bridge. Part of him was still very angry because of how Maya had treated him at the restaurant. But another part of him, a part that was still soft and kind, hoped that Maya was safe. He felt like there was a war inside his chest between his anger and his hope.

As Leo reached the middle of the bridge, he saw a shape standing near the tall stone railing. It was Maya. She was still wearing the white fur coat that Chief Benson had given her, but she did not look like the proud girl from the restaurant anymore. Her hair was messy because of the wind. When she saw Leo, she began to cry even harder. Her makeup was smeared across her face in dark lines, making her look very sad and very tired.

She looked small against the big, dark sky. Leo stopped a few feet away from her. He did not know if he should go closer or stay back.

"Leo! You came!" Maya cried out. Her voice was shaking, and she was gasping for air between her sobs. She took a step toward him, but she stayed near the edge of the bridge. "Oh, Leo, I am so sorry! I made such a big mistake! Everything I said at the restaurant was a lie. I was so scared. Chief Benson is not a good man. He is a monster! He is a very bad man!"

Leo watched her. He wanted to believe her. He wanted to think that the Maya he loved was back. He wanted to think that the bad things she said were just a mistake. "Why are you here, Maya? Why did you send me that text message?"

Maya wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her expensive fur coat. "He found out that I was talking to people I shouldn't talk to. He got very angry. He took my phone away from me! He took my ID cards and my money! He said I belong to him now. He told me that if I ever tried to leave him, he would make sure I disappeared forever. I managed to get a phone for just a minute to send you that message. I am so scared, Leo. Please, you have to help me! Please take me back! I want to go home with you to our quiet life. I don't want the diamonds or the fancy food anymore. I just want you!"

Leo felt a pull in his heart. He remembered the three years they had spent together. He remembered the small apartment and the way they used to dream about the future while eating cheap noodles. For a second, he forgot about the "Valentine Project" folder in Mrs. Adele’s study. He forgot about the stolen pension funds. He forgot about how she had called him a beggar in front of everyone. He only saw a girl who looked like she was in a lot of trouble. Leo started to move forward. He reached out his arms to give her a hug and tell her that everything would be okay.

But then, Leo’s eyes moved past Maya. At the very end of the bridge, hidden in the shadows where the streetlights did not reach, he saw something. It was a large, black SUV. The engine was running, but the lights were turned off. It was just sitting there, idling quietly like a big animal waiting to jump. Leo froze. If Maya was truly alone and running away, why was that car there? Why was it waiting?

He looked back at Maya. She was still crying, but Leo noticed something very strange. She was not looking at his face. She was not looking into his eyes to see if he still loved her. Instead, her eyes were fixed on his jacket pocket. She was staring at the small bulge where the velvet ring box sat. Her eyes were not full of love.

They were full of something else. It was a look of hunger. It was a look of sharp greed.

Maya stopped sobbing. Just like that, the tears seemed to dry up on her face. Her voice changed. It was no longer soft and shaking. It was sharp and cold, like a piece of broken glass.

"You still have it, don't you?" Maya asked. She was not asking about his love. She was asking about the ring. "The ring you bought for me. The one you saved for for three years. You didn't throw it away, did you, Leo?"

Leo felt a cold shiver go down his spine. He realized that Mrs. Adele was right. Maya was playing a game. She knew that the ring was valuable, but more than that, she knew that Leo’s love made him easy to trick. He took a step back, away from her. He felt the weight of the velvet box in his pocket. It felt like a heavy stone.

"Why do you care about the ring, Maya?" Leo asked. His voice was steady now.

"You have a diamond bracelet that costs more than my whole life. Why do you want a small ring from a delivery boy?"

Maya laughed. It was a mean, loud laugh that the wind carried away. She didn't look sad anymore. She looked like a hunter who had finally caught her prize. "The diamonds the Chief gives are tracked, Leo. He knows where they are at all times. But your ring? That is clean. That can be sold for cash that no one can track. I need that money to get out of this city before the Chief’s wife finds the codes I stole. I need that ring, Leo. Give it to me."

Leo realized that Maya had never changed. She was still the same greedy person he saw at the restaurant. She had called him here not because she loved him, but because she wanted to rob him of the last thing he had. She was using his kindness to steal from him.

"I am not giving you anything, Maya," Leo said. "I know about the stolen money. I know about the pension funds. Mrs. Adele told me everything."

Maya’s face turned very ugly with anger. "That old woman! She thinks she can stop us? She is wrong. If you won't give me the ring because you love me, then you will give it to me because you have to."

Just as Maya finished speaking, Leo heard a sound behind him. It was a very small sound, like a metal click. It was the sound of a gun being readied to fire. Leo felt something cold and hard press against the back of his ear. He went very still. He did not move a muscle. He could smell the scent of expensive cigarettes and the smell of gun oil.

"Do what the lady says, beggar," a deep, rough voice growled in his ear.

Leo knew that voice. It was Viktor, the Chief’s head guard. He had been hiding in the shadows behind Leo the whole time.

The black SUV at the end of the bridge was not there to protect Maya from the Chief. It was there because Maya and the Chief were still working together to find the one thing Mrs. Adele had hidden: the final key to the vault, which the Chief believed was hidden inside Leo's ring box.

Leo stood at the edge of the bridge. The dark water was below him. Maya was in front of him with greedy eyes. And a gun was pressed against his head from behind.

He realized that the "Valentine Project" was much more dangerous than he ever imagined. He was trapped on the bridge, and the person he loved most in the world was the one leading him to his end. The suspense was so high that Leo could feel his own heart stopping. He had the ring, but now he had to fight for his life.

How do you feel about Maya now? Did you expect her to be so greedy that she would trick Leo again?

Why do you think Maya is so interested in the ring box? Do you think there is something hidden inside it besides the ring?

Leo saw the black SUV and realized it was a trap. Do you think he has a plan to escape, or is he truly caught?

Is Chief Benson truly a monster, or is Maya the one who is actually running the show?

What do you think Mrs. Adele will do when she sees that Leo is in trouble with Viktor?

The betrayal is complete! Leo went to the bridge for love, but he found a gun and a heart of stone. Maya has shown her true colors, and now Leo is in the fight of his life! Will he give up the ring? Will he survive the night?
