The Mystery Behind The Dark Water.

The night was very thick and very heavy over the village of Omoni. The air felt like it was made of cold lead. The big bonfire in the center of the village was throwing long and scary shadows against the walls of the small huts. Everyone was waiting for the clock to strike twelve. Everyone was waiting to see if the water would stay black. But behind the twisted Bone Tree, a very different kind of battle was happening. Chief Obina had raised his heavy wooden club high in the air. He was standing right behind little Amara. His face was full of a dark and mean anger. He wanted to stop anyone who was trying to help Jidenna. He wanted the secret of the stolen necklace and the story of the two brothers to stay buried forever in the black mud of the river.

As the Chief started to swing the heavy club down, something amazing happened. Amara was a very small girl, but she was very quick. She had spent many years playing tag and climbing trees with Jidenna. She saw the shadow of the club moving on the ground. She did not freeze. She did not scream. Instead, she tucked her head and rolled to the side. She moved just like a little squirrel darting away from a hawk. The heavy wooden club hit the trunk of the Bone Tree with a loud crack. The sound was so big that it felt like the tree was shivering. The Chief let out a grunt of frustration because he had missed his target.

Amara did not waste a single second. She reached down into the mud and grabbed her small knife. She scrambled back to the ropes that were holding Jidenna. She saw that she had already cut through most of the vines. There was only one thick cord left holding Jidenna’s chest to the bark. She grabbed the rope and sliced it with all her might. The sharp metal cut through the dry vines like they were made of soft grass. With a loud snap, the last rope broke. Jidenna fell forward into the mud, his body finally free from the prison of the tree.

"Run to the Cave of Echoes!" Amara whispered. Her voice was shaking, but it was very clear. "It is the only place the guards cannot follow us! We must go now!"

Jidenna’s legs were very stiff and very sore from being tied up for so long. He tried to stand, but he stumbled. Amara reached out and grabbed his hand. Her grip was very strong. She pulled him up and pointed toward the dark line of the forest. Jidenna looked at her and nodded. He still could not speak, but his eyes said thank you. He felt the blue stone in his pocket glowing with a tiny bit of heat. It was like the stone was telling him to keep moving.

Together, the two children turned and bolted away from the riverbank. They ran past the shadows of the huts and headed straight for the deep, dark woods.

Behind them, Chief Obina was furious. He had lost his balance when the club hit the tree. He scrambled to his feet, his robes covered in dirt. He looked toward the village square and let out a scream that sounded like a wounded animal.

"Guards! Traitors! The witch is escaping!" the Chief roared. "Capture them! Do not let them reach the forest! Bring me their heads!"

The guards heard the scream and jumped to their feet. They grabbed their long spears and their shields. They started to run toward the Bone Tree, their heavy boots thumping on the ground. The villagers were confused. They did not know what was happening. They saw two small shadows running toward the trees and the Chief waving his arms in a frenzy. The peace of the midnight wait was broken. The hunt had started again, and this time, the Chief was not going to let anyone get away.

The Great River began to make a new sound. It was no longer just bubbling and hissing. It began to roar. The sound was very strange and very scary. It did not sound like water hitting rocks. It sounded like a thousand angry voices all shouting at the same time. It sounded like the ghosts of the past were waking up and screaming for justice. The black water rose up in tall waves that crashed against the bridge. It was as if the river was trying to climb out of its bed to follow the children. The noise was so loud that it made the ground shake under the feet of the running guards.

Jidenna and Amara reached the edge of the forest. The trees here were very old and very close together. Usually, the forest was a place where Jidenna felt safe. He knew the paths and the hiding spots. But tonight, the forest felt very different. It felt like the trees were alive and they were not happy. As the children ran into the shadows, the wind began to howl through the branches. The leaves were rustling so loud it sounded like the trees were whispering secrets to each other.

"The forest is angry too!" Amara cried out as they pushed through some thick bushes. "It feels like the woods are trying to catch us!"

She was right. As they ran, the trees seemed to move. One moment, there was a clear path between two big oaks. The next moment, the branches seemed to lean in and block the way. Thorny vines reached out and snagged Jidenna’s yellow shirt, trying to pull him back. The roots of the trees seemed to grow larger and pop out of the ground right where the children were stepping. Jidenna tripped over a root and fell, but he quickly scrambled back up. He could hear the guards behind them. He could see the flickering light of their torches moving through the trees. The guards were coming, and they were getting closer.

The Cave of Echoes was a very special place deep in the heart of the woods. It was a giant hole in the side of a rocky hill. The villagers said that if you spoke a word inside the cave, the walls would repeat it a hundred times until it sounded like a choir. They also said the cave was guarded by the spirits of the old kings. No one in Omoni was brave enough to go there, especially not at night. But Amara knew it was their only chance. The guards were too superstitious to enter the cave. If they could just reach the entrance, they would be safe.

But the forest was getting harder to cross. The sky was so dark that they could hardly see where they were going. The only light came from the faint blue glow of the stone in Jidenna’s pocket and the scary orange fire of the guards' torches behind them. The roaring of the river followed them into the woods, echoing off the trees. It felt like the whole world was turning into a giant mouth that wanted to swallow them whole.

Suddenly, a loud cracking sound filled the air. It was louder than a gunshot. Jidenna and Amara stopped and looked up. A giant branch from an ancient mahogany tree was breaking. The wood was snapping and splintering. The branch was as big as a whole tree itself. It was covered in thick moss and heavy vines. It began to fall right toward the spot where the children were standing.

"Look out!" Amara screamed.

She grabbed Jidenna’s arm and tried to pull him forward. The giant branch came crashing down with a sound like thunder. It hit the ground with so much force that it sent dirt and leaves flying into the air. The branch landed just a few inches behind Jidenna’s heels. It blocked the path completely. It was so big that the guards would have to climb over it or go all the way around. For a second, the children were safe from the men with spears. But the branch had also knocked down several other smaller trees, creating a wall of wood and thorns in front of them.

Jidenna looked at the wall of trees and then he looked at Amara. They were trapped. The guards were on one side, and a mountain of fallen wood was on the other. He could hear the Chief’s voice getting louder. The Chief was laughing now. He thought he had caught them. Jidenna felt the blue stone in his pocket getting very hot. It was so hot that it started to burn his leg. He reached into his pocket and pulled the stone out.

The stone was no longer a dull blue rock. it was glowing with a light that was so bright it was hard to look at. It looked like a small piece of the sun had been trapped inside a jewel. The light from the stone hit the fallen trees. As the light touched the wood, the shadows began to dance. Jidenna felt a strange power moving through his arm. He didn't know what to do, but he felt like the stone wanted to help.

The mystery of the dark water was now reaching a point where magic and reality were mixing together. The children were alone in a screaming forest, faced with a wall of trees and a group of angry guards. The Cave of Echoes was still far away, and the spirit of the river was roaring in their ears. Jidenna held the glowing stone high in the air, his eyes wide with wonder and fear. Was the forest trying to stop them, or was it trying to show them a different way?

The shadows of the guards appeared on the other side of the giant fallen branch. Their spears poked through the leaves. Chief Obina’s face appeared in the torchlight, looking like a demon from the deep. He saw the glowing stone in Jidenna’s hand and his eyes filled with a greedy hunger.

"Give me the stone, boy!" the Chief yelled. "Give it to me and I might let the girl live!"

Amara stepped in front of Jidenna, her small knife raised. She was ready to fight a whole army to protect her friend. The giant branch groaned under the weight of the guards. The suspense was so heavy it felt like it was breaking the trees. The final race for the truth had begun, and the Cave of Echoes was waiting for its first word.

Why do you think the trees are moving and blocking the path? Are they helping the Chief or the children?
