The Mystery Behind The Dark Water.

The giant whirlpool gave one last powerful push. Jidenna felt himself flying upward through the thick, inky liquid. For a moment, everything was dark and loud. Then, his head popped above the surface of the Great River. He gasped for air, but the air did not taste sweet like it used to. It tasted like smoke and bitter dust. He was back on the surface. He was back in the world of the living. But the village of Omoni did not look like the home he remembered. It looked like a place of nightmares. The sky was a strange, muddy color, and the wind was howling through the trees like a hungry animal.

Jidenna grabbed onto a piece of wet wood floating near the bridge. His body felt heavy and tired. The blue stone the ghost had given him was still in his hand, but it was not glowing very brightly anymore. It looked like a regular rock. Jidenna looked toward the shore. He expected to see his mother crying with joy because he was safe. He expected his friends to reach out their hands to pull him from the black mud. But as he wiped the soot from his eyes, he saw something that made his blood turn to ice.

The village was in total chaos. People were running back and forth with torches in their hands. The fire from the torches made long, dancing shadows on the ground. But the people were not looking for him to save him. They were gathered in a big, angry circle near the riverbank. In the center of that circle stood Chief Obina. The Chief looked taller and scarier than ever before. He was wearing his heavy robes, and his face was red with anger. He was pointing his finger toward the water, right at the spot where Jidenna was floating.

The villagers turned their heads. Jidenna saw his neighbors. He saw the woman who sold him sweet cakes in the market. He saw the old man who taught him how to weave baskets. But they did not look at him with love. Their eyes were filled with a deep, hot hate. They looked at him as if he were a monster or a dangerous snake.

"He is a witch!" the Chief screamed, his voice cracking. "Jidenna went into the Forbidden Forest to talk to the spirits of the dark. He made a deal with the shadows to destroy us all! He is the reason the earth is shaking! He is the reason the fish are dying! He is not a boy anymore. He is a curse!"

Jidenna’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. He wanted to tell them the truth. He wanted to tell them about the city of glowing stones. He wanted to tell them that the Chief was the one hiding the secrets of the two brothers. He opened his mouth to speak. He wanted to say, "I am not a witch! I am Jidenna, your friend!" But as he tried to talk, no words came out of his throat. It felt like his voice had been stolen by the black water. Only a tiny, dry wheeze came from his lips. He was silent, and his silence made him look even more guilty to the angry crowd.

"See?" the Chief cried out to the villagers. "He cannot even speak! The demons have taken his tongue! We must stop him before he finishes his dark magic. We must save Omoni from the witch boy!"

The villagers started to growl and shout. Some of them picked up heavy stones from the ground. Others gripped their farming tools like weapons. They began to move toward the edge of the water. Jidenna felt a tear run down his face. He felt so alone. He had gone to the bottom of the world to find a way to save these people, and now they wanted to hurt him because of a lie. He realized that the Chief was very clever. The Chief knew that if he made everyone afraid of Jidenna, no one would listen to the truth.

Jidenna struggled to climb out of the water. He pulled himself onto the muddy bank, his yellow shirt now stained completely black. He stood up on shaky legs, holding the blue stone tight. He looked at the crowd, hoping to see one person who still believed in him. But everywhere he looked, he saw only anger. Even the children he used to play with were hiding behind their parents and pointing at him with scared faces.

Chief Obina stepped forward, walking slowly toward Jidenna. He had a wicked smile on his face, even though he was trying to look like a hero. He stopped just a few feet away from the boy. The guards stood behind the Chief with their spears ready. The Chief looked down at Jidenna with eyes that were cold and mean.

"You should have stayed in the deep, boy," the Chief whispered, so low that only Jidenna could hear. "You think you can change the story of Omoni? I am the king here, just like my grandfather was. The river belongs to me, and the people belong to me. You are nothing."

As the Chief spoke, he leaned forward. The wind blew his heavy robes to the side, and the light from a nearby torch hit his chest. Jidenna’s eyes widened. He forgot about his fear for a second. He forgot about the angry crowd. He looked at the Chief’s neck. There, hanging from a thin leather cord, was a necklace. It was a very special necklace made of a single, polished tooth from a great river fish.

Jidenna knew that necklace. He would know it anywhere. It was the necklace that his father, Zaki, had worn every single day of his life. His mother had told him that the necklace was lost on the night Zaki died. She said it must have fallen into the deep water where no one could find it. But it was not in the water. It was right there, around the neck of Chief Obina.

The Chief had stolen it! He had taken it from Jidenna’s father on that terrible night five years ago. Jidenna realized with a shock that the Chief didn't just watch his father die. He was the one who did it. He had taken the necklace like a trophy, a prize for keeping the secret of the two brothers safe. The Chief was the traitor. He was the one with the blood of Okoro on his hands.

Jidenna felt a sudden spark of fire in his chest. The pain he had felt earlier was still there, but now it was mixed with a powerful anger. He looked at the necklace and then he looked into the Chief’s eyes. The Chief saw that Jidenna had noticed the tooth. For a split second, the Chief’s smile disappeared. He looked worried. He quickly pulled his robes shut to hide the necklace, but it was too late. Jidenna had seen the truth.

"Give it back," Jidenna thought, though he still could not speak.

The villagers were getting closer. The first stone was thrown, and it hit the mud right next to Jidenna’s foot. The Chief saw that the people were ready to attack. He raised his hand to give the signal. He wanted to finish Jidenna off before the boy could find his voice.

"Do not wait!" the Chief shouted to the crowd. "The witch is trying to cast a spell with that blue rock in his hand! Destroy it! Stop him now!"

Jidenna looked at the blue stone in his hand. It began to hum. It felt like it was vibrating in tune with the anger in his heart. The soot on the ground began to swirl. The black river behind him started to rise up again, forming a small wave that looked like a dark hand. The mystery was no longer a secret. It was a war. Jidenna was standing in front of a man who had murdered his father and lied to his entire village. He was a boy with no voice, facing a crowd of people who wanted him dead.

But Jidenna knew something they didn't. He knew that the light of the city of glowing stones was still inside that blue rock. He knew that the river was waiting for him to do something. He looked at the Chief’s hidden necklace and felt the spirit of his father near him. The suspense was so thick it felt like it was choking everyone.

The air was filled with the sound of shouting and the smell of fire.

The guards raised their spears. The villagers pulled back their arms to throw more stones. Jidenna stood his ground, his eyes fixed on the Chief. The secret was out, but the danger was only just beginning. Would Jidenna be able to show the village the stolen necklace? Would he be able to find his voice before the spears were thrown? Or would the Chief’s lies finally win?

The Great River gave a low, deep moan. The black water began to creep up the bank, touching Jidenna’s feet. It was time for the final truth to be told, but the price of that truth was higher than anyone could imagine.

Why do you think Chief Obina was foolish enough to wear Zaki’s necklace in public?

How can Jidenna prove the necklace belongs to his father if he cannot speak?

If you were a villager and you saw the Chief acting so angry, would you start to wonder if he was lying?

The blue stone is starting to hum. What kind of power do you think it is about to release?
