The Wife From India, Episode 1
Pooja, a very beautiful Indian damsel just arrived in Nigeria from India. She came with her two children to look for her husband, Igwe. Igwe is missing. He has been missing for six months now. Igwe is a Nigerian who lived in India for more than ten years. It was in India that he met Pooja. They fell in love, got married and bore four children. Six months ago, Igwe travelled to Nigeria from India. He said he was coming to see his mother who was sick. However, he did not return to India as planned. Pooja has waited for a long time for her husband he did not return. All his numbers were switched off. Even the numbers of Igwe’s relatives were switched off.
“I call my husband every day but has number has failed to connect since the past six months. I keep wondering what happened to him. He left me and his children in India and came to Nigeria. He said he was coming to see his mother but six months has passed. I called all the numbers I have but none of his relatives are picking up. I don’t know what is happening. I love my husband so much and his children love him. That is why we are in Nigeria to look for him. I’m going to trace the address he gave to me when we got married in India many years ago. I will go to his village to see if he is there. My husband cannot just disappear like a spirit,” Poojah said. She pulled her children into a taxi. They drove out of the Lagos airport and head to a hotel.
“Let us just rest at the hotel this night. Tomorrow, I and my children will travel to Eastern Nigeria where Igwe’s village is located. I must find my husband. He is the love of my life and I can never leave him. My children needs their father. Wherever my husband is, I must find him and return home with him,” Pooja said. Soon, she and her children arrived at a hotel which she had already booked online. They entered the hotel room and she ordered food for herself and her children. They ate and slept off.
However, Pooja did not sleep well. She kept asking herself why her husband will just disappear without trace. She was convinced that Igwe loves her and there was no way he was going to leave her and run away the way he did. Pooja is convinced that something is wrong somewhere.
“Something must be wrong somewhere. I was the one who picked Igwe from the streets in India. I cleaned him up. I gave him money. My father is a very rich man. He tried to stop me from getting married to Igwe, but I refused. Instead of me not to marry him, I got pregnant for him. Because of the pregnancy, my father had no choice but to allow us to get married. The marriage happened in a hurry just the way I wanted it. My father still gave me a lot of money despite the fact that I brought disgrace to him by getting pregnant for Igwe. I gave all the money to Igwe and he used it to become rich. He was poor when I met him but my father made him rich. The moment I got pregnant, no more questions were asked. I was allowed to marry him without even visiting Nigeria. I can’t believe that today is my first time in Nigeria despite the fact that I gave birth to two children a man who is from here. Well, he is missing now and I’m here to find him,” Pooja said in her heart.
Pooja was restless throughout the night. Her heart was busy processing what it would feel like if she and her children travelled to Igwe’s village the next day and find him.
“I will be so happy. We were a happy family back in India. I keep wondering why he travelled and refused to return to India. He loves me and he loves his children. Igwe has never been away from home for more than one week without calling us. But this time around, he disppeared for six months without even a phone call. I really don’t understand. But I’m here in Nigeria to get to the root of the matter. I will find out what happened to my husband. I will find him and I will reunite with him. He is the love of my life and I will look for him no matter what it will cost me,” Pooja told herself.
Soon, it was daybreak. Pooja woke her children. She fed them and prepared them for the flight to Enugu. Soon, they were in a taxi heading to the airport. Their flight to Enugu was already booked. Soon, the flew out of Lagos and headed to Enugu. Throughout the flight, Pooja’s mind was restless.
“I can’t wait to see the village where my husband comes from. I’m sure he will be there waiting for us to arrive. He must have missed us so much the same way we missed him. But today is the day we will reunite and be happy once again,” Pooja said in her heart as the airplane landed at the Enugu airport. A few minutes later, they were on their way riding out of the airport in a taxi. Pooja gave the address which was written on a paper to the driver of the taxi.
“I know the place. I will take you there,” the driver tells Pooja.
“I’m so happy that you know the place. Just drive us straight to the village. I will pay you any amount,” Pooja said. The drive to the village lasted a bit long, but after about 30 minutes, they finally arrived.
“This is the village. You can ask people around to show you the compound,” the taxi driver said. Pooja did not want to waste time, so she called two okada riders and asked them if they know Igwe’s family compound.
“I know the compound,” one of the okada riders said.
“Please, you people should take us there,” Pooja said. Pooja was speaking Igbo fluentlya and the Okada riders were surprised. The ride to Igwe’s family house was short. They arrived there in about 15 minutes.
One old man who was in the compound came to welcome them.
“I’m looking for my husband. His name is Igwe. We got married in India about ten years ago. Six months ago, he came to Nigeria but did not return to India. I have come to look for him. Here are his children,” Pooja said.
“The man you mentioned is dead. I mean, he died 20 years ago. I’m surprised to hear that he went to India and got married because that’s not possible. Come, let me show you his grave,” the old man named Awanti said.
“He is not dead. I mean, we are married.” Pooja said. She was shocked.
“I said he died 20 years ago. He was my younger brother. I was present the day he died and I participated in his burial. He could not have married you because he is dead. Maybe, you people came to the wrong address,” Awanti said.
