Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 6
Episode Six
Benjamin and Mary were busy with their wedding plans. They had gone to see the pastor. They had even printed invitation cards. The church was happy for them. Friends and neighbors congratulated them.
But while they were smiling, Evelyn was in her room, thinking of evil. She could not sleep at night. She could not eat well. The thought of Benjamin marrying another woman burned her heart.
“They will never get married so long as I’m alive,” Evelyn said with anger in her eyes.
“Benjamin thinks he can dump me after all these years and marry someone else? No. I will not allow it.”
She walked up and down in her room, biting her finger, thinking. She thought of many ways to scatter the wedding. At first she thought of going to Mary to warn her. She thought of telling lies that Benjamin had another wife. But she shook her head.
“No, that will not be enough. I want Benjamin to suffer. I want him to cry the way I’m crying,” she said.
She sat on her bed and continued thinking. Suddenly, an idea came to her mind. She sat up quickly.
“Yes! I know what to do,” she said. “I will implicate him. I will make the police carry him away. If he goes to jail, he will never have the chance of getting married. Mary will run away. His name will be spoiled forever. That is what I will do.”
Her heart was beating fast. The idea excited her. She laughed softly, a bitter laugh. “Benjamin, you rejected me. You pushed me out like a dog. Now you will pay. You will beg me when you are behind bars.”
The next day, Evelyn went to a place in the street where men smoked Indian he.mp. The place was dirty. Men were sitting in corners, smoking and laughing. Evelyn was afraid but she forced herself to stay.
One of the men looked at her suspiciously. “Fine woman, what are you looking for here?” he asked.
“I came to buy something,” Evelyn said quietly.
The man laughed. “So you too sm.oke?”
“I want Indian he.mp,” Evelyn said.
The man called another person and whispered. They brought out a black nylon bag filled with dried leaves. “This is plenty. Are you sure you want it?” the man asked.
“Yes. I need it,” Evelyn said. She brought out money and paid them.
The men looked at her strangely but they didn’t ask questions. She carried the nylon bag carefully and left the place.
When she got home, she sat down and smiled. “This is the key to Benjamin’s downfall,” she said.
She thought of how to execute her plan. She knew she couldn’t enter Benjamin’s restaurant herself. People would see her and suspect her. So she decided to use someone. She called one of the street boys and explained.
“Take this nylon. Enter Benjamin’s restaurant. Order food. Eat. When you are done, leave the nylon under the table and walk out. I will pay you well,” she said.
The boy looked at her in shock. “Madam, this thing is not good oh.”
Evelyn frowned. “Just do it. Don’t ask me questions. If you do it well, I will give you more money.”
The boy agreed. She gave him extra money to encourage him.
That afternoon, the boy went into Benjamin’s restaurant. He behaved like a normal customer. He ordered rice and chicken. He ate slowly. He laughed with the workers. Nobody suspected anything. When he finished eating, he carefully left the nylon bag under the chair and walked out.
The workers cleaned the table but didn’t notice the bag. It remained there.
Evelyn picked her phone and typed a message to the police.
“Good afternoon. Please I want to report a man named Benjamin. He is pretending to sell food in his restaurant but he is secretly selling Indian he.mp. If you come today and search, you will see it.”
She sent the message and smiled. “Today your life will end, Benjamin. Let me see how you will marry Mary when you are inside prison,” she said.
Hours later, two police vans arrived at Benjamin’s restaurant. They entered with force. Customers were surprised. Workers were confused. Benjamin came out quickly.
“Officers, good afternoon. Please what is happening?” Benjamin asked.
One officer shouted, “We got a report that you are selling Indian he.mp here. We came to search.”
Benjamin was shocked. “Me? Indian he.mp? God forbid! This is a restaurant. Please, you can search anywhere.”
The police began to search the whole place. They looked in the kitchen, the store, the offices. They didn’t see anything. Benjamin was calm.
“Officers, you can see this is a clean business. I don’t sell such things,” he said.
But just as he finished speaking, one officer shouted from the customer area. “I found something! Come and see!”
Everyone rushed there. The officer carried the black nylon bag. He opened it. The smell filled the air. It was full of Indian hemp.
The police looked at Benjamin. “So it is true. You are selling this here,” one officer said.
Benjamin raised his hands in shock. “No! I have never seen this before. That is not mine. Someone must have dropped it here. I don’t know anything about it!”
The officer shook his head. “That is what criminals always say. You will explain yourself at the station.”
Benjamin tried to plead. “Please, I am innocent. This is a setup. Please believe me,” he said with a shaky voice.
But the police didn’t listen. They handcuffed him in front of his workers and customers. Mary arrived at that moment and saw him. She screamed.
“Benjamin! What is happening? Why are they arresting you?”
Benjamin looked at her with tears in his eyes. “Mary, I don’t know. They said I’m selling Indian he.mp. But I swear to you, I am innocent. This is a lie. Please believe me.”
Mary cried loudly. “My God! What is this? Who did this to us?”
The police pushed Benjamin into their van. People gathered around. Some shook their heads. Some whispered. Others looked with pity.
Evelyn, who was hiding nearby, smiled to herself. She whispered, “Yes. This is just the beginning. Benjamin, you thought you could leave me and marry another woman? Never. I have started with you. You will see more.”
The van drove away with Benjamin.
