The Strong Reverend Father, Episode 1
Tomorrow is the day Emmanuel has been waiting for. Tomorrow, he is going to be ordained as a Catholic priest. Finally, he will be called Reverend Father Emmanuel. Emmanuel is very happy because for many years, he has studied hard and obeyed all the rules and regulations at the seminaries where he was trained as a Catholic priest. He passed all the examinations and tests. He was cleared for ordination by his bishop. His friends and family members are happy for him and they have already arrived in Abuja to celebrate with him. But there is one big problem which might stop his ordination.
The problem is that his girlfriend has vowed to come to the ordination venue to expose him. Emmanuel’s girlfriend is pregnant with a baby. Her name is Brenda and she has vowed not to allow Emmanuel to become a priest. She said Emmanuel must marry her. Brenda boarded a bus from Enugu and travelled to Abuja two days ahead of the ordination date. Her baby bump is big because the pregnancy has already clocked eight months. In fact, she is close to delivering the child. Emmanuel had no idea that his girlfriend planned to come to the ordination venue to cause trouble.
“He can’t leave me in this condition and become a priest. The agreement we had is that he is going to marry me. I never knew he planned to dump me. Look at me now, I’m pregnant and the father of my baby wants to become a priest. If he eventually becomes a priest, he will not be able to marry me again. I will not allow this to happen. I will go to the bishop and let him know that Emmanuel kept me in this condition. He got me pregnant and now he wants to run away and become a priest. He must not become a priest.
Emmanuel must take responsibility of this child,” Brenda said while crying in her hotel room. She has already spent two days in Abuja and she does not want anyone to know that she is there. She just want to appear at the ordination venue and spring a powerful surprise.
“He will not believe his eyes when he will see me and my pregnancy at the ordination venue. He thinks I have forgotten about him. Emmanuel thinks I will just forget about him and move on. I will never forgive him. He is my husband and he cannot leave me and become a priest after sleeping with me and getting me pregnant. I will not allow it. I can’t wait for tomorrow morning so that I can storm the ordination venue. I want to look at his face and tell him the truth. Tomorrow, Emmanuel will cry because he will not be ordained as a priest if I open my mouth and tell the bishop what he did to me,” Brenda said while still crying. As she cried, she was gently touching her belly and feeling the kicking and movement of the baby in her womb.
Brenda packed her handbag and arranged it the way she would carry it to the ordination the next day. She arranged the cloth she wants to wear. She carefully selected a tight dress which would reveal her baby bump very well. She did not want to leave anyone in doubt that she was pregnant. She wants the pregnancy to be very visible. Brenda picked up her shoes and cleaned them properly. She then stopped crying and went to bed.
“Let me get some sleep because I need to wake up early tomorrow morning. I don’t want to be late to the ordination,” Brenda said to herself.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel had no idea that trouble was coming. Emmanuel is generally a very peaceful person and he never anticipated that someone would plan to stop him from becoming a priest. Already, his parents supported him when he took the decision to become a reverend father. All his relatives are standing behind him. Emmanuel’s friends also offered him huge support. All his friends formed a committee of friends and contributed a huge sum of money which they used to buy him a car. They planned to present the car to him as his ordination gift at the venue. However, all these good things might not happen if Brenda succeeds in pouring sand into Emmanuel’s garri.
“I think everything is set now. At this point, nothing else can stop me from becoming a priest. Even the devil cannot stop me. God has signed it that I will become his servant. My dream of serving God in his vineyard is finally coming to pass. All dreams are valid no matter how long they might take before becoming reality,” Emmanuel tells himself when he was resting that night. It was the final night before the ordination. In a few hours, people will start calling him Reverend Father Emmanuel.
“I’m so happy,” he said. He struggled to sleep that night. The night seemed too long. He wanted the night to be over quickly so that he could start wearing his priestly attire. He only fell asleep around 12am. By 5am, Emmanuel woke up and started preparing. He took his bath and got ready. His family and friends were also ready. They did not want to be late at all. A bus was chattered to take friends and family to the ordination venue. By 8am, everyone was set and they all entered the bus and headed to the ordination venue.
Meanwhile, Brenda was already at the ordination venue. He arrived there earlier than anyone. She looked for a restaurant and hid inside. Her intention is to show her face when it is time to ordain Emmanuel. There are several priests to be ordained that day. She carefully observed and waited until it was Emmanuel’s turn. She could see when the bishop wanted to lay hands on Emmanuel. She stood up from her seat and standing moving to the altar.
“It is time to expose him. It is time to let the bishop know that the man he is about to ordain got me pregnant and ran away to become a priest. So far as I’m alive, Emmanuel cannot become a priest. He is my husband. He must marry me because he cannot leave me in this condition and become a reverend father. I cannot suffer to raise this child alone ,” Brenda said in her heart as she approached the altar. She looked angry and walked as if someone was pushing her forward. She was also crying. There were a lot of crowd at the venue.
When she heard that Emmanuel was going to be ordained a priest, she purposely chose to keep quiet until the ordination day. She did not report anything to anyone on time so that her allegations will be investigated as required. She did not report to the bishop on time or even to Emmanuel's parents or school. She chose to come openly and cause trouble.
“Today is the day I have been waiting for. I can’t allow this to happen. Every secret will be exposed today. Nothing will be hidden. I’m going to say everything that needs to be said. Everyone will hear what Emmanuel did to me,” Brenda said as she continued walking towards the altar.
