Unexpected Trouble Episode 10

Livinus lay quietly on his hospital bed, wondering what's next for him. The past few months had been a nightmare, but he was finally beginning to feel like a human again. The doctors came in daily, checking his progress and adjusting his medications. Uche visited him almost every day, bringing food and news from outside. "You are stronger now," Uche said, smiling warmly. Livinus nodded slowly. "I feel stronger," he replied. Though he had lost weight, his cheeks were beginning to fill out again. The nurses smiled each time they passed his room. Recovery was slow, but Livinus was determined to live.

Each morning, Livinus woke up with renewed hope. He ate his meals carefully, took his drugs, and did the small exercises the doctors recommended. After three weeks of intensive care, he was finally looking better. His body no longer ached the way it did when he first arrived. His skin was brighter, and there was new strength in his voice. "You are a miracle," the head nurse said one afternoon as she helped him sit up. Livinus managed a small smile. "God is not sleeping," he said. The hospital workers loved him for his quiet strength.

Meanwhile, the police had finally received the autopsy report on Melinda. It had been a long wait, but the truth was finally coming out. The police took the report and studied it carefully. Their faces grew serious as they realized what it meant. There was no mention of foul play. No mention of poisoning. Nothing at all that pointed to Livinus. The truth stared at them clearly from the document. Melinda had died of heart failure. They were in trouble now because it meant that they had wrongly accused an innocent man.

One cool Monday morning, the police came to the hospital with a small team of officers. Livinus was informed that he was needed in court for the continuation of his trial. "It is time," the officer said without much emotion. Livinus dressed up with the help of the nurses. Though he still felt weak, he was strong enough to stand and walk. As he was escorted into the police van, Uche followed behind in his car. "Today will be a good day," Uche said aloud as he started his car. He believed strongly that justice would be served.

The court premises were busy when Livinus arrived. Journalists were everywhere, holding microphones and cameras, trying to capture every moment. Livinus sat quietly in the dock while his lawyer stood tall and confident. The prosecutor was also ready, holding a copy of the autopsy report. The judge, a stern-looking woman, entered the courtroom, and everyone rose to their feet. After a few formalities, the court clerk stood up to read the autopsy report aloud. "The deceased, Melinda, died as a result of heart failure," the clerk announced clearly. The whole courtroom became very silent.

The judge adjusted her glasses and looked at the parents of Melinda. "You are aware that your daughter had a history of high blood pressure?" she asked calmly. Melinda’s father looked at the ground, while her mother held onto her handbag tightly. After a brief silence, Melinda’s father spoke. "Yes, Your Lordship. She had been battling high blood pressure for years. We were managing it with drugs," he said quietly. Livinus' lawyer seized the moment. "My Lord, it is clear that my client is innocent," he said firmly. "There is no evidence of foul play against him."

The prosecutor tried to argue but it was weak. Everyone in the courtroom could see that there was no more case to pursue. "Why did you accuse this young man without proper investigation?" the judge asked sharply. The prosecutor stammered. "We... we were acting on suspicion, My Lord." The judge shook her head in disappointment. "Suspicion is not enough to ruin a man's life," she said. Livinus bowed his head slightly, feeling a heavy burden lifting from his shoulders. His lawyer stepped forward. "My Lord, we humbly apply that Mr. Livinus be released immediately from detention."

The judge gave her final verdict. "Mr. Livinus, you are hereby discharged and acquitted of all charges. You are free to go," she announced. A loud murmur ran through the courtroom. Journalists rushed to capture the moment. Uche ran to hug Livinus tightly, tears shining in his eyes. "You are free, my brother! You are free!" Uche shouted. Livinus smiled, a rare, beautiful smile that touched everyone who saw it. "Thank you, Uche. Thank you for standing by me," he said. Even the judge smiled lightly before stepping down from the bench.

Outside the court, Livinus stood and looked around as the sun shined warmly on his face. The police officers who once mocked him now avoided his gaze. The journalists crowded around him, shouting questions. His lawyer raised his hand. "We have no comment for now," he said politely. Livinus simply wanted to go home. As he entered Uche’s car, he looked back at the court building and said softly, "Never again." Uche laughed and tapped his back. "You are stronger now, my brother. This is just the beginning of your testimony." Livinus nodded quietly.

By the time Livinus got home, neighbors had gathered to welcome him. Some women brought food and drinks. Old men sat under trees, discussing the wickedness of the world. Children pointed at him shyly, whispering among themselves. Livinus entered his father's house, now feeling empty without his late father. He touched the pictures on the wall and sighed. "Papa, I wish you were here to see this day," he said quietly. Uche placed a hand on his shoulder. "He is smiling down at you from heaven," Uche said. Livinus closed his eyes briefly and smiled.

Over the next few days, Livinus rested quietly at home. Friends and family visited him, bringing words of encouragement. Many apologized for doubting him when the news first broke. "We are sorry, Livinus," one old woman said one afternoon. Livinus smiled gently and replied, "It is God that judges all things." Slowly, life began to return to normal. He started eating well again, walking around his compound, and planning for his future. Though the scars of the experience would remain, Livinus was determined not to let bitterness consume him. He had survived what many would not.

Meanwhile, Uche and the lawyer filed a lawsuit against the police for unlawful detention and human rights violation. "They must pay for what they did to you," the lawyer said confidently. Livinus did not care much about the money. All he wanted was peace and justice. Still, he agreed to the lawsuit. As the case draggedon, more people began to learn about his story. Many human rights organizations offered him support. Some journalists even offered to tell his story to a larger audience. Livinus agreed, not for fame, but so that others would learn.

One evening, Livinus sat outside his house, watching the stars. Uche sat beside him, sipping a bottle of malt. "What will you do now?" Uche asked. Livinus thought for a while before answering. "I will live a good life," he said. "I will make Papa proud." Uche smiled. "You already have, my brother." They sat in silence for a long time, listening to the distant sounds of the village night. Livinus felt peace slowly returning to his soul. He was free. He had survived injustice, betrayal, and death. Now, it was time to start again.
