The Gen Z Housemaid

Episode 14

There comes a time in a man's life that he takes a strong decision. Chief Okolo's mind is made up. He told himself that he could no longer live in lies and fear. Deborah has become too troublesome. Jane is carrying his child, and he is determined to stand by her.

“I cannot abandon Jane. I cannot abandon my unborn child,” he said to himself. He felt a heavy load lift from his shoulders. For the first time in days, he smiled. He decided he would divorce Deborah and marry Jane. It was the only way forward.

"I'm ready for the concequences." He said.

That evening, he called Jane into his room. She walked in with curiosity written all over her face.

“Chief, you called me,” she said.

“Yes, Jane. Sit down. I want to tell you something important.” Jane sat on the bed with her heart beating fast.

Chief cleared his throat. “I have made my decision. I will not abandon you. I will not abandon our baby. I will divorce Deborah. I will make you my wife.”

“Chief, are you serious?” she asked.

“Yes,” Chief said firmly. Jane clapped her hands in excitement.

Later that night, after dinner, Chief picked up his phone and called his lawyer. He explained everything to him.

“Prepare the papers,” he instructed. The lawyer listened quietly and agreed to act immediately. The next morning, Chief’s lawyer filed the divorce papers at the court. By afternoon, the papers were served to Deborah in her office.

Deborah’s hands trembled as she held the documents. Her heart broke into pieces. She felt betrayed and humiliated. She rushed home to confront her husband. Her eyes were filled with fire and tears.

Inside the room, Deborah held up the divorce papers.

“What is the meaning of this nonsense?” she shouted. Chief looked at her calmly.

“Deborah, it is exactly what you see. I want a divorce. I cannot continue like this.” Chief said. Deborah threw the papers on the floor.

“So after everything we have been through together, this is how you want to pay me back?” she asked angrily.

Chief stood up and looked her straight in the eyes. “Jane is pregnant. She is carrying my baby. I have no option. I must stand by her.” Deborah staggered backward, almost collapsing.

She stormed out of the room without saying another word. She went straight to the kitchen where Jane was sipping juice and scrolling on her phone. Deborah’s footsteps were making loud noises. She slammed the kitchen door. Jane looked up lazily. Deborah pointed at her with anger.

“So you are the one destroying my marriage? You are the one who got pregnant for my husband?” She said.

Jane laughed. She dropped her phone and laughed mockingly. “Yes, Madam. And what will you do about it? Chief loves me now. You are old. Your time is over.” Said Jane.

Jane did not stop. She stood up and folded her arms. “Look at you, Deborah. You are old and dried up. What do you expect? Chief needs a young woman like me. Someone who can give him another child. Someone who can satisfy him. Stop deceiving yourself. You cannot compete with me.” Jane said.

Deborah’s eyes turned red. But she forced herself to remain calm.

“Jane, listen to me carefully. You think you are wise. You think you have won. But you will regret this pregnancy. You will regret taking my husband. I promise you that.” Deborah said.

That night, Deborah did not sleep. She lay awake on her bed, turning from one side to the other. The words Jane said kept ringing in her head. “You are old. You cannot compete with me.”

Her anger grew like fire. She thought about her husband, about Jane, about the disgrace she was facing. Tears rolled down her eyes, but she quickly wiped them away. She sat up and looked at herself in the mirror.

“No. I cannot let them get away with this. They have mocked me enough. I will not take it. I will fight back.” Deborah said.

The next morning, Deborah dressed up quietly and left the house without telling anyone where she was going. She went straight into town and entered a small shop at the corner. A friend had told her about the secret shop. Inside, a man sat behind a wooden counter. Deborah leaned forward and whispered something to him. The man looked at her closely.

“Are you sure about this, madam?” he asked.

“Yes. I want it. Give it to me.” After some minutes, the man brought out a small black bag. Deborah opened it slightly and saw a gun inside.

She paid the man and walked out of the shop with the bag pressed tightly under her armpit. She went straight to her car and sat inside for a long time. She held the bag on her laps and kept looking at it.

"This is the only way,” she said to herself. She started the car and drove back home slowly. On her way, she kept imagining how she would use the gun. She thought of Jane’s mocking laughter. She thought of Chief’s betrayal. The anger inside her grew stronger.

By evening, Deborah was back in the house. She went upstairs and locked her room. She placed the black bag on her bed and opened it again. She removed the gun and stared at it for a long time. She raised it slightly, as if testing her courage.

“Yes. This is what they deserve. They cannot disgrace me and go free. Chief cannot betray me and think he will live happily. Jane cannot mock me and think she will take my place. I will show Chief Okolo and Jane that they can’t joke with me.”
