The Temptation Episode Nine
“I'm suffering. My life has turned into something I never imagined. I left my dignity behind and chased money and pleasure, thinking it would end well. Now see me here, locked up like a criminal, suffering like a common thief. If I had listened to my conscience, I would not be in this dirty place today. I should have walked away when I had the chance, but I did not. I should not have slept with Ndu. It is wrong to sleep with another woman's husband. I know that it was Afoma who asked me to tempt her husband, but that was not a reason for me to try to steal him from her. I made the wrong move and it has landed me in police trouble. I know that Afoma bribed the police to label me a kidnapper. Now I'm suffering and I don't even have money to bribe the police like Afoma.” Doris said to herself inside the cell.
Two weeks have passed since Doris was brought into detention. She has not seen sunlight properly. She was weak and tired. She barely ate because the food tasted badly. Her body was breaking down slowly. She coughed often and felt dizzy all the time. The cold floor was her bed. The smell in the cell was unbearable.
"I don't wish to stay here any longer. I want to be released." She said in her heart. She has cried countless times, but no one cared. Each day felt longer than the previous one. Death started looking like a real possibility to her.
“My suffering is too much. I did not kidnap anyone. I did not hold Ndu hostage. I did not collect ransom. Yet they have already written everything against me. The police have prepared a strong kidnapping case. No one is listening to my side of the story. No one wants to hear the truth. They have made up their minds. They want to send me to prison for something I did not do. Is this how my life will end? Will I die in this place without justice?” Doris said to herself in tears.
She is regretting everything she did with Ndu.
“I do not want to go to jail. I do not want to die. I am not strong enough for prison life. I know I made a mistake, but I do not deserve this kind of punishment. God, please save me. If I come out of here alive, I will never go near a married man again. I will change my ways. I will live a quiet life. I just want my freedom back. I want to breathe fresh air again. I want to live a normal life. I cannot die here like this.” Doris cried silently on the floor.
"I cannot beat this anymore. I have to do what possible to leave this dirty detention room." She said.
Because she could not bear it anymore, Doris begged the police to allow her see Afoma. She told them she had something important to say.
The police men knew that their strategy was working against Doris. Afoma has bribed them heavily and instructed them not to allow Ndu see Doris. She made it clear that her husband must not have access to the detention room. The police called Afoma and informed her that Doris was sick and requesting to see her. Afoma did not hesitate. She agreed to come.
"I think Doris has learned her lessons and she is now ready to beg me. Well, I'm ready for her to die in prison if she fails to leave my husband. Well, let me go and hear what she wants to say." Afoma said.
Afoma arrived at the police station looking calm and confident. She was taken to the detention room. As soon as Doris saw her, she broke down completely. She knelt down despite her weak body and started crying uncontrollably. She confessed everything without holding back. She admitted how she slept with Ndu repeatedly. She admitted how greed consumed her. She told Afoma that after Afoma paid her to tempt Ndu, she lost control and slept with him. She said she was sorry and begged for mercy with tears.
"It was not easy to control myself." Doris said.
Afoma stood quietly and listened. Her face showed no pity. Doris continued crying and apologizing. She said she never planned for things to go that far. She said money blinded her. She said she was ashamed of herself.
"I'm ashamed of what I did. It is wrong to sleep with a married man. Please, forgive me. I will never do it again." Doris said.
Afoma listened with satisfaction. She finally spoke and laid down her conditions calmly. She told Doris that the only way she would talk to the police was if Doris resigned from her husband’s office immediately. She said Doris must leave Lagos. She must relocate to another town. She must cut off every connection with Ndu completely.
"You will resign your job and stop working for my husband. You will never go close to his office. You will also leave this Lagos for me." Afoma said.
Doris nodded repeatedly as Afoma spoke. She agreed to everything without hesitation. She said she would leave Lagos immediately. She said she would resign her job and disappear from their lives. She promised never to contact Ndu again for the rest of her life. She begged Afoma to have mercy on her dying body.
"Please, I'm from a poor family. Please, tell the police to release me. Don't allow them to take me to court. I don't want to go to jail." Doris begged.
Afoma looked at her and delivered the final condition slowly and clearly.
"One more condition: If you are already pregnant for my husband, you will abort the baby. If you agree, I will tell them to release you.” Afoma said.
