Waiting for a Rich Man Episode 1
Sonia was the most beautiful girl in her village. People said she looked like a queen. Her skin was smooth, her eyes were bright, and her smile could melt any heart. Everywhere she went, heads turned. Young men followed her around like bees. They brought her gifts, helped her carry things, and tried everything to win her heart. Even older men tried their luck. Sonia had just finished university and returned to the village. Her parents were happy to have her back. They hoped she would soon marry and settle down. But Sonia had her own plans, and they were different.
Her parents called her many times and advised her to accept one of the serious suitors coming for her. They reminded her that beauty does not last forever. Her mother told her, “Sonia, marry a good man now while people are coming. Don’t wait too long.” But Sonia always laughed. “Mama, I can’t marry a poor man,” she would say. “I’m too beautiful for that kind of life.” She wanted a man who would come from the city with money, cars, and style. She dreamed of marrying into wealth, not suffering. Her parents were worried but had no choice.
In the village, word spread fast about Sonia’s pride. Some men gave up, saying she was too proud. Others still tried. They came with yams, gifts, drinks, and their families. One even came with his pastor. Sonia refused them all. “I’m not ready,” she would say. “I want something bigger.” Her father shook his head in sadness. He was a poor farmer. Her mother sold vegetables at the roadside. They didn’t understand where Sonia got her big dreams. But Sonia didn’t care. In her mind, a rich man would soon appear. She believed her beauty was enough to attract wealth.
One day, a man from a neighboring village heard about Sonia. His name was Uche. He wasn’t rich at all. In fact, he was struggling to survive. But he was smart, and he liked fine things. When he heard about Sonia, he became interested. “If she’s that beautiful, let me go and see for myself,” he said. Uche borrowed a motorcycle and went to the village market where Sonia usually passed. The moment he saw her, he was shocked. “Ah! She’s finer than they described,” he said. Right there, he made up his mind. “I must marry this girl,” he whispered.
Uche knew she wouldn’t agree to marry a poor man, so he thought of a plan. He decided to pretend to be rich. He contacted one of his cousins who worked in a car rental company in the city. “Please, I need to rent three big cars,” he told him. “I want to impress a girl.” The cousin agreed. Uche then borrowed a fancy suit and bought a small fake gold wristwatch. He shaved well, cleaned his shoes, and prepared for the visit. He wanted to appear like a successful businessman from the city. It was a perfect trap.
On a sunny afternoon, Uche arrived in Sonia’s village with the convoy of rented cars. The whole village came out to watch. People thought it was a governor. Uche stepped out wearing sunglasses and a fine suit. He walked confidently to Sonia’s house. Sonia’s mother nearly fainted when she saw the cars. Sonia came out and was shocked. Uche introduced himself. “My name is Uche. I came from Abuja. I heard about your beauty and I’m here to make you my wife.” Sonia was speechless. This was what she had been waiting for—her dream was coming true.
Sonia quickly welcomed him into the house. Uche lied about owning a big hotel in Abuja. He said he came with his personal assistant and driver. He promised to open a shop for her in the city after marriage. Sonia smiled throughout. Her parents were surprised at how soft she suddenly became. “So this is what she wanted all along,” her father said quietly. That same day, Uche asked for her hand in marriage. Sonia didn’t waste time. She said yes. Her parents were happy to see her finally accept someone. Preparations started immediately. The wedding was fixed for the next Saturday.
People in the village were shocked. “Ah! So Sonia found her match,” they said. “Money has blinded her eyes.” Nobody knew Uche was faking everything. Even the village chief sent his blessings. Sonia became the talk of the whole village. Some girls were jealous. Others admired her luck. Sonia walked around like a queen. She told her friends, “I told you all that I can’t marry a poor man.” They all looked at her in awe. She believed she had made the best choice of her life. But behind the fancy clothes and rented cars, Uche was shaking.
Uche was scared but kept pretending. He was spending the little money he had on fake appearances. He didn’t even know how he would pay for the next part of the plan. But he was desperate to marry Sonia. “Once I marry her, things will fix themselves,” he thought. He believed her beauty would help him open doors. Maybe people would give them gifts. Maybe one rich person would help. He didn’t know how, but he hoped something would come up. For now, he focused on the wedding. He just had to act rich for a few more days.
As the wedding day drew near, Uche rented another set of clothes and arranged for a ring. He asked his cousin to return on the wedding day with the cars. He promised him a small payment. The cousin agreed. Sonia, on the other hand, bought her wedding dress with her own savings. She was already packing her things. She told her mother, “Mama, I’m leaving this poor village. I’ll live in Abuja now. Life is about to start.” Her mother smiled and prayed for her. “God bless your new home, my daughter,” she said. Everyone was full of excitement.
The wedding day arrived. The compound was filled with people. The cars came again, and people danced and shouted. Uche and Sonia were joined as husband and wife. They smiled for the camera. Food was plenty. Music was loud. People came from many places to see the beautiful bride and the rich groom. After the wedding, Uche took Sonia in one of the cars and they left the village. Sonia waved happily from the car window. She didn’t know that trouble was waiting for her ahead. Uche smiled too, but his smile was fake. He knew the game was over.
As they drove off, Sonia held Uche’s hand and said, “I can’t wait to see our mansion in Abuja.” Uche nodded and smiled. He was thinking fast. He had only one day left with the rented car. He had no house, no hotel, and no money. “What do I do now?” he asked himself. The lie was becoming too big. But it was too late. The wedding was done. Sonia was now his wife. And soon, the truth would come out. But for now, they were still driving on the lonely road, heading toward a future built on lies.
