Long Distance Relationship
Episode 10
Jemima was heartbroken after Femi left her house that evening. She could not eat. She could not sleep. The sound of the door closing that night kept echoing in her head. She cried until her eyes were swollen. She kept blaming herself for everything. For five long days, Femi neither called nor visited her. She tried calling him, but he refused to pick her calls. She sent him many messages, but he never replied. Her heart was filled with regret. Every passing hour felt like punishment. She feared she had lost him forever.
A week later, Jemima heard a knock on her door. When she opened it, she saw Femi standing there. She froze. Her heart started beating fast like a drum. She was expecting him to start shouting. But instead, Femi’s face was calm. He walked in quietly and sat down. Jemima stood still. She was confused.
“Femi, please say something. I have not been myself since that day,” she said while crying. Femi looked up at her. Then, to her surprise, he went down on his knees.
“Jemima, I also have a confession to make.” Femi said.
“I am not innocent either. I have also failed you, Jemima. I have been carrying a secret inside me for too long. When I traveled to America, I met someone else. I met a white woman. She was kind to me, and she helped me settle down when I was struggling. I didn’t plan for it to happen, but I fell in love with her. I tried to stop myself, but my heart was already gone. I kept telling myself I would return home and marry you, but I was lying to myself.”
“While I was with her, I did what I told myself I would never do. I cheated on you. I betrayed your trust too. I knew you were waiting for me back home, but I couldn’t stop what I was feeling. That woman showed me love in a way I never expected. I started imagining a future with her. But at the same time, I couldn’t bring myself to tell you the truth because I didn’t want to hurt you. I kept hoping my feelings for her would fade, but they only grew stronger.”
“I got her pregnant. When she got pregnant, I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. I knew if you found out, you would be heartbroken. So I lied. I told her I had to travel back to Nigeria for family reasons. I promised her I would return, but deep down, I was confused. Before I left America, she gave birth to a baby girl. I saw the baby before I traveled, and something inside me told me I couldn’t abandon them forever. I realized that my heart was no longer with you, Jemima.”
“When I returned to Nigeria, I tried to act normal. I tried to pretend that I still loved you the same way I did before, but it wasn’t real anymore. My heart wasn’t here. I was trying to force myself to love you again, but I couldn’t. I was forcing myself to marry you out of pity. I thought time would help, but every day, I kept thinking about her and our baby. I wanted to tell you the truth that day when I came to your house, but I couldn’t find the courage. I didn’t want to hurt you after being apart for so long.”
“Now that I know the full story, I have realized something. You and I are not meant to be together anymore. I’m not angry about what happened between you and Bruno. I don’t blame you. I believe everything happened for a reason. You were lonely, and I was far away. We both made mistakes. But I can’t pretend anymore. I have decided to go back to America and marry the woman I truly love. You can go ahead and marry Bruno if that’s what makes you happy. I sincerely wish you both peace and joy.”
Femi stood up slowly. His eyes were filled with sadness but also relief.
“I don’t love you again, Jemima. It’s not because of the pregnancy or what happened with Bruno. It’s because my heart now belongs to someone else. Please don’t beg me to stay. There is no need for that. This is where our journey ends.” Femi said.
Jemima was speechless. She just stood there staring at him as he walked to the door. He turned one last time, gave her a faint smile, and walked away silently into the night.
Jemima sat on the floor and cried. The man she had loved for so long was gone forever. But as the days passed, she began to think deeply. She realized that Femi was right. Their love had died long before they even knew it. Slowly, she started to heal. She started spending more time alone, reflecting on her choices. Bruno came to visit her often, and despite everything that happened, he stood by her. He was patient and caring. Little by little, her heart began to open again.
Months later, Jemima and Bruno got married quietly. It was a small wedding attended by close friends and family. Femi, on the other hand, returned to America and married the white woman. He sent Jemima a message wishing her well in her new life. She smiled when she read it.
“Everything happened for a reason.” She said.
The End.
