Long-distance Relationship
Episode One
It is now three years since Femi left Nigeria. He has lived in the USA since then. She is an engineer and she has found a good job. He has started making good money and he has decided to return to Nigeria and get married. His fiance, Jemima is Nigeria waiting for him to come back and marry her. He has arranged everything and he is going to fly to Nigeria in few weeks. He decided to send a message to Jemima.
“Babe, prepare. I will be in Nigeria in a few days. We will get married and we will travel to America together.” Femi wrote in the message he sent on WhatsApp.
Tears gathered in Jemima’s eyes immediately after she saw the message. This is the day she has been waiting for. Femi us finally coming home after three years. They are going to be husband and wife at last. But as she read the message, she knew there was a very serious problem. Jemima is pregnant. The problem us that the pregnancy was not for Femi.
"How I wish I'm not pregnant. I have betrayed Femi. I have messed up everything." Jemima said to herself.
It all started after Femi travelled. He trusted his younger brother Bruno so much that he always sent him to deliver gifts to Jemima. At first, it was just normal visits. Bruno would drop the gifts and leave. But as time went on, he started staying longer in Jemima's house. He started helping Jemima with small things in the house. They started talking more often. They started seeing each other more often.
One thing led to another, and before Jemima knew it, she was falling for Bruno. She told herself it was wrong, but she did not stop. Bruno kept coming, and she kept opening her door for him. Their feelings for each other grew fast.
One night when it rained heavily, Bruno came to drop some things Femi sent.
Jemima asked him to wait until the rain stopped. That was the night everything changed. He touched her. She did not stop him. Before she could think, she found herself in his arms. That was the beginning of their secret affair. They went to bed and made love passionately.
What started as a mistake continued for months, then years. Jemima tried to stop it many times, but each time Bruno came around, her heart failed her. It was already two years now. And they have made love hundreds of times.
And then last month, she discovered she was pregnant.
Jemima sat on the bed, crying.
“How did I get myself into this mess?” she asked herself. She kept looking at the message Femi sent.
"I don't know if I should tell him. But how am I going to tell him that his brother got me pregnant?" She said.
She could not tell Femi because it would break him. He loves her too much. He is planning their wedding. He is making arrangements for her to join him in America after marriage. If he finds out that she is pregnant for his own younger brother, it would destroy him.
"I can't say such a thing. I don't know how to confess it." Jemima said.
She could not also tell Bruno. She was scared of what he would say. Would he insist on marrying her? Would he try to fight Femi? Everything was complicated.
That evening, Bruno called her.
“Jemima, how are you? I want to see you.” he said.
“I’m fine. Please, don’t come.” Jemima replied.
“But why? You have been avoiding me.” Bruno said.
“Bruno, please. I just need some space.” she said with a weak voice. Bruno paused.
“You know I love you, right? You are not just my brother’s fiancée. You are mine too. You belong to me. Please, don’t push me away.” Bruno said.
“Please, Bruno. Don’t make things worse than they already are,” she said and ended the call.
Jemima lay down after the call and thought of Femi. She remembered how he worked so hard in America, how he sent her money, how he endured the distance because of love. He kept himself faithful, waiting for her. And here she was, carrying another man’s child.
She began to cry again. “Oh God, what have I done?” she said. She placed her hands on her stomach. The baby was innocent, but this was not the right time.
“I love Femi, not Bruno. I can’t lose Femi because of this pregnancy.” She wiped her tears.
The next morning, her phone rang. It was a video call from Femi. His smiling face appeared on the screen.
“My queen!” Femi said with excitement.
“My love, I miss you,” Jemima replied.
“Babe, I will be in Lagos in a few days. I already booked the hall for our wedding reception. Our dream is finally coming true.” Femi said.
Jemima’s lips shook. She wanted to tell him the truth but she could not.
“I can’t wait to see you, Femi. I have missed you so much,” she said.
After the call, Jemima wept. She touched her stomach and made a decision.
“I will keep this pregnancy a secret. I will not tell Bruno. I will not tell Femi. I will pin the pregnancy on Femi. He is the one I love, not his brother.” she said to herself.
She nodded and tried to encourage herself. But her heart was still full of fear. What if Femi found out? What if Bruno decided to talk? Everything could scatter in a second.
That night, Bruno sent a long text to her phone.
“Jemima, don’t push me away. I know it is wrong, but I can’t stop loving you. I don't want to stop sleeping with you. No matter what happens, I’ll always be here for you.”
Jemima threw her phone on the bed. She was frustrated. She wished she could rewind time. She wished she never allowed herself to fall into this mess. But it was too late. The pregnancy was here already.
“Why is Bruno making everything harder for me?” Jemima said with tears in her eyes. Jemima went on her knees that night. She prayed as tears dropped from her eyes.
“God, what have I done? I love Femi but I betrayed him. I am about to marry him but I am carrying his brother’s child. What will I do? God! I have made a serious mistake. I hope Femi will not find out that I’m pregnant.” She said.
