First Time in America Episode Six

Chikobi still wants to continue her marriage with Liza, but she doesn't want to. Despite all he has heard from her, despite hearing that she slept with another man, he still told her that the marriage must continue.

"We are still husband and wife. Stop talking about divorce. We are Christians and I cannot divorce you. I'm a man of high standing in my church. What are people going to say about us if they hear that we have gone our separate ways? Please, stop talking about divorce. Let us continue our marriage. I have forgiven you for sleeping with the white man." Her husband said.

However, Liza's mind was made up. She wanted a divorce, and nothing would change her mind.

"I don't want you anymore. I want to marry the white man." Liza said.

The more Liza thought about her situation, the angrier she became. Chikobi was acting like he still loved her dearly. He started cooking for her, did laundry, and did many things for her in the apartment. For many days, Chikobi kept pampering her. It annoyed Liza. She didn't need his kindness. She needed a way out. She needed something solid. Something that will force her husband to leave her alone. That was when the idea entered her mind. It was wicked, but she didn't care.

She picked up her phone and called a makeup artist she had seen on Instagram. The lady was known for special effects makeup. She explained what she wanted. The makeup artist agreed to come the next morning.

The next morning, the makeup artist arrived. She was a young girl with a small kit bag. Liza explained again, whispering like someone who had just survived a tragedy.

"Make my face look as if someone gave me a serious beating." Liza said. The girl nodded, then brought out red and black makeup. In less than thirty minutes, Liza's face looked swollen. There was fake blood on her lips and a red mark on her cheek like a slap. Her left eye looked bruised. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled. She looked like someone who had been beaten for days.

"Thank you," she said to the makeup artist.

Then, Liza dialed the police emergency number 911.

"Hello? Please help me. My husband has been beating me... please... Liza said.

She pretended to cry. Her voice sounded weak. She gave them the house address and hung up.

Within thirty minutes, two police officers arrived. They were both in uniform. Liza opened the door slowly, acting scared. When they saw her face, their expressions changed. They looked angry. They asked where her husband was. She told them he was in the backyard washing clothes. They rushed to get him. When they dragged him into the sitting room, he was confused.

"What is going on?" Chikobi asked.

The police didn't answer. They told him he had the right to remain silent. He stared at Liza with shock.

"Liza, what is this? What's happening?"

"You know what you did," she said boldly.

The police put handcuffs on him. He tried to explain, but they didn't listen.

They took him to the station and locked him up. His face was filled with confusion and pain. Meanwhile, Liza followed them calmly, her fake bruises still on her face. She said she wanted to write a statement. They gave her a pen and paper. She took her time and wrote slowly, making sure every sentence counted. She wanted the police to feel sorry for her.

"My name is Liza Chikobi. I am writing this statement because I fear for my life. I have been living in fear for the past three years. My husband, Mr. Chikobi, has been beating me and tormenting me. I have tried so hard to endure, but I can no longer continue like this. I need help.

"My husband hits me whenever he is angry. Sometimes it is because I did not cook early. Sometimes it is because I didn't iron his clothes well. I live in fear every day. I cannot sleep without thinking about what will happen the next morning. I pretend that everything is fine.

"I have scars all over my body. Some are fresh, others are old. But I cover them with clothes and makeup. I do not know how I have survived this long. But I cannot pretend anymore. I want peace in my life. I want to breathe freely. I do not want to be a victim forever.

"On the 14th of August, my husband beat me so badly that I lost my pregnancy. I was three months pregnant. I cried and begged him to stop, but he didn't stop until I fainted. When I woke up, I was in the hospital. The doctor told me I had lost the baby. My heart broke that day.

"I have suffered silently for too long. I have no family here. I have no one to run to. I hoped my husband would change, but he didn't. Instead, things became worse. I believe he will kill me one day if I do not speak up. That is why I have come to you.

"I want the law to protect me. I want justice. I want my husband to face the consequences of his actions. I want to live again. I want to be happy again. I do not deserve to suffer like this. I do not want to die in the hands of a man who swore to love and protect me.

"I am begging this honorable police station to help me. I want to file for a divorce. I want full protection from my husband. I want my life back. I am tired of pretending. I am tired of hiding. I want the world to know what I am going through. I am innocent. Please help me."

When she finished, she wiped fake tears from her eyes. The police officer nodded slowly. He looked at her with pity. He didn't know it was all a lie. He believed every word she wrote. He said they would investigate the matter thoroughly. Liza thanked him and walked out of the station. She had done it. She had finally set her plan in motion. She didn't care what happened to Chikobi anymore. She knows she lied against an innocent man. All she wanted was to be free.
