The next day, it was Claire who woke first. In the soft sheets, with the cool morning air, she thought at first of John. But it was the warm body next to her that really brought her around. Claire assumed it must be the brothers who were objecting to the renovations. But Filippo shook his head.

"The mayor is loyal to his brother and to his wife. Its the sister-in-law who calls the shots. Everyone knows that she is in charge, especially in the bedroom. So she gets to say what happens with the church."

Filippo went on to explain that everyone in the district was aware of the wife's sexual behaviour. Everyone talked of her as having perverted desires and unquenchable needs.

"Then she got found out trying to seduce one of the altar boys. Before my time. I hear it was a full scandal. The old priest then tried to banish her from the village church. Of course, with so many scandals these days, he really had no choice."

He paused as if in thought. "I don't know how the mayor knows that. But Father John and Sister Teresa suggested that I ask for you."

"Father, that is very kind," Claire tried to protest. "But I am hardly innocent."
