Unexpected Trouble Episode 2

Livinus walked slowly on the street, heading to the police station. His shirt was wet with sweat, and his slippers made a loud sound as he dragged his feet. He didn't look at anyone or anything. His eyes were fixed on the ground as if it would give him answers. He was confused, but one thing was clear in his mind-he had to report what happened. Melinda was still lying in his bed, not breathing. He didn't know what killed her, but he knew he had nothing to hide.

When he got to the police station, one of the officers looked at him and asked, "Young man, wetin carry you come here this early morning?" Livinus stood for a while before answering. "Officer, I get problem," he said. "My girlfriend came to visit me from Lagos. We went out yesterday, came back, and slept. But this morning, I woke up and saw that she was dead. "The officer dropped the pen he was holding. "You say wetin?" Livinus nodded. "She's dead. She didn't wake up."

Another officer joined them immediately. "Where she dey?" he asked. "For my house,"

Livinus replied. "I didn't touch her. I didn't kill her. She just slept and didn't wake up." The officers looked at each other and stood up. "You go carry us go the house now," one of them said. "We must see her body first." Livinus turned and led the way. The officers followed behind, their faces hard. People on the street started looking at them as they walked past. Livinus didn't care anymore.

When they entered his compound, one of the neighbours came out and greeted. "Ah, Livinus, wetin happen?" The officers didn't answer. They followed Livinus straight into the house. He pushed the door open slowly. Melinda's body was still lying there, just like he left her. One of the officers stepped back. The other officer walked closer and shook his head. "We need to carry her body go hospital immediately.

Few minutes later, a police van arrived with two more officers. They wrapped Melinda's body in a white cloth and carried her outside. Livinus stood at a corner, watching everything. He couldn't believe this was happening. One moment they were laughing at the restaurant, the next moment he was standing beside her lifeless body. The officers entered the van with the body. "Enter inside," one of them told Livinus. He obeyed without argument and sat quietly at the back of the van.

At the hospital, the doctor came out and examined Melinda. He checked her heartbeat, her eyes, and her pulse. After few minutes, he looked up and said, "She's gone. No sign of life. "One of the officers frowned. "Doctor, na this kind death you just accept like that?" The doctor looked serious. "We need to run tests to know the exact cause. But for now, I can confirm that she's dead." Livinus sat on a bench, rubbing his hands together.

The police didn't waste time. They turned to Livinus. "Oya, follow us go station. You go write statement." He followed them again. This time, his legs were weak. At the station, they gave him a sheet of paper and told him to write everything that happened. Livinus started from the beginning-how they met, how she came to visit, how they went out to eat, and how she slept and never woke up. He gave them all the details he could remember. He didn't hide anything.

After reading his statement, the officers exchanged looks again. "You mean say woman

travel from Lagos come visit you, and na die she die inside your house?" one of them asked. Livinus nodded slowly. "Yes sir." The officer shook his head. "This kind story no pure. You no even call her family." Livinus tried to explain. "I wanted to call them after confirming at the hospital. I didn't want to panic them without being sure." But the officers didn't believe him.

Another officer joined the discussion. "You no think say maybe na you use her for ritual?" Livinus opened his mouth, shocked. "Ritual? Me? I loved Melinda! We were planning to get married. She even said yes last night." The officers didn't look convinced. "Many of una dey talk like that. Na so e dey start. Then boom, person go die. This one pass love story." They told him to stand up and follow them. They led him to the back of the station and locked him inside a small cell.

The room was dark and hot. There were two other men inside already, sitting on the floor. Livinus stood close to the wall and leaned on it. His legs were shaking, and his head was heavy. One of the men inside the cell looked at him and said, "New man, wetin carry you come?" Livinus shook his head. "Na woman matter." The man laughed. "No worry, all of us here dey for woman matter. Just relax. Tomorrow we go know how your own go end." But Livinus didn't feel relaxed.

As the day passed, more officers came to look at him. Some asked questions, others just stared and walked away. One officer brought bread and water later in the evening. "Oya, take. You go need energy." Livinus collected it and sat on the floor to eat. His mind was full. He thought about Melinda's parents. How would they take the news? What would he tell them? He remembered how she smiled at him in his house. That was the last time he saw her alive.

Back in the main office, the officers were already planning their next step. "We need to contact her people," one of them said. "And we go send the body for autopsy. We must know wetin kill her." Another officer nodded. "But I still dey suspect this boy. Why she go die just like that? No sickness, no wahala. Something no add up." They agreed to wait for the test results. But until then, Livinus would remain in the cell. To them, he was not just a lover. He was a suspect.

Night came quickly. The police station was quiet except for the sound of insects outside.

Livinus lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling. He didn't sleep. He just kept thinking. He thought of Melinda again. He remembered how she laughed when he knelt down to propose. He remembered how she said yes and hugged him tight. Everything happened so fast. Now she was gone. And he was behind bars, accused of something he didn't understand. He knew his life would never remain the same.
