The House Rent Saga Episode Nine

Many months had passed since Ene discovered she was pregnant. Her belly had grown large, and it was clear that the baby would arrive soon. Ene had been feeling different signs in her body, indicating that the time was near. She had prepared herself mentally and physically for the delivery.

"I hope I will be able to push out this baby successfully. This is my first pregnancy and I hope the delivery will not have any complications. I have done everything I needed to do. I attended all my antenatal sessions and I took all the medications givens to me by the doctors at the hospital. I have done my part and I have left the rest in the hands of God. I'm praying and hoping for a safe delivery. I know that my baby will arrive successfully when the right time comes. I can't wait to celebrate the birth of my baby. That day will surely be a great day." Ene said to herself one even when she was in her shop.

She no longer runs around the shop the way she used to run before. She takes things easy. Her legs now looks swollen and her pregnancy is so heavy for her to carry around. Ene has learned to carry herself and the pregnancy gently.

One night, after a long day, Ene went to bed early. She hoped to get enough rest, knowing that she needed her strength for the coming days. Around midnight, a sharp pain in her abdomen woke her up. This was not the usual discomfort she had felt before. The baby seemed to be moving more intensely, almost as if it was ready to come out.

Feeling an urgent need to urinate, Ene carefully got out of bed and made her way to the bathroom. As she reached the bathroom, she felt a sudden gush of fluid down her legs. She realized that her water had broken. Panic set in as she understood that labor was starting.

Ene called out to her husband, Agada, who was still asleep. He woke up immediately, sensing the urgency in her voice. She explained what had happened, and without wasting time, Agada helped her to their car. He drove quickly but carefully to the nearest hospital, praying silently for the safety of his wife and unborn child.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the medical staff attended to Ene promptly. She was taken to the labor ward, where the doctors confirmed that she was indeed in labor. Hours passed, and Ene struggled through the contractions. Despite her efforts, the labor did not progress as expected. She was becoming exhausted, and the pain was overwhelming.

By the end of the day, the doctors became concerned. They recommended an emergency cesarean section (CS) to safely deliver the baby. Agada was called aside and informed about the situation.

"Your wife has been in labor for a long time, and there is a risk to both her and the baby. We need to perform a cesarean section immediately. The cost for the procedure is N400,000." The doctor explained with a sense of urgency.

Agada's heart started beating fast as he heard the amount of money he was asked to pay. He did not have that amount of money. He had been working hard to provide for his family, but N400,000 was beyond his current means. He pleaded with the doctors to reconsider their stand lower the amount they were demanding.

"Please, is there any other way? I don't have that kind of money right now." Agada said.

The doctors looked at him with sympathy but remained firm. "We understand your situation, but this is a matter of life and death. Without the surgery, both your wife and baby are at great risk."

Feeling helpless, Agada sat in the waiting area. His mind filled with thoughts of what to do. He considered calling friends and family for help, but he knew that raising such an amount on short notice would be nearly impossible. Time was running out, and Ene's condition was worsening.

Just as despair was about to consume him, the hospital doors opened, and Okopi, their landlord, walked in. He had heard about Ene's situation and came straight to the hospital. Seeing Agada's distressed state, Okopi approached him and asked, "What is happening? How is Ene?"

With tears in his eyes, Agada explained the situation. "The doctors say she needs an emergency cesarean section, but they are asking for N400,000. I don't have that kind of money."

Without hesitation, Okopi reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He transferred N500,000 to Agada. "I have sent you the money. Ensure that Ene gets the care she needs.

Agada was overwhelmed with gratitude. He looked at Okopi and said, "I don't know how to thank you. You have done so much for us."

"Ene is like a sister to me. I couldn't stand by and do nothing." Okopi responded.

With the payment secured, the doctors proceeded with the cesarean section. The surgery was successful, and Ene gave birth to a healthy baby. She was weak but alive, and the baby was safe. When she woke up and learned about what had happened, she was highly emotional. She was grateful to be alive and to have her baby, but she also knew that the situation with Okopi was becoming more complicated.

As she held her newborn, Ene was overwhelmed with so much joy. Her joy knew no bounds. She wept out of happiness when the baby was given to her.

"I'm such a lucky woman." Ene said.

Agada nodded, holding his wife and child close. He silently vowed to protect his family and ensure that they would never be in such a vulnerable position again.

But as he looked at the baby closely, Agada noticed that the child looks exactly like the landlord. That was when serious trouble started.

To be continued.
