"I'm not sure he'll forgive me after what happened last week.

Things have been strained between us for a while. I've made my peace with possibly never speaking to him again."

"Damn," Dad said. "I hate that."

"I do, too, but this is all on him. It's not like I'm not willing to help." I avoided looking over at Emily, who had come to me when she was at rock bottom. If Jacob had done the same, I would have been happy to do the same for him, but while he was on this destructive path, I wasn't about to let him drag others down with him. Especially his own wife and son.

"Richie, I know you've got a full ride for school, but I'm also setting you up with a trust. Mom and Dad will be the trustees till you're twenty-five."

"What? Are you serious?" he asked, his eyes wide.

"I know you're way more mature than I was at your age, but just want to make sure you have some help and guidance with it.. at least for a while."

"Man," Richie said, "I don't know what to say, Marcus!"

"Just keep doing amazing things, man. That's all I'm asking."

"Marcus," Shawna said, "this is all so much. Are you sure?"

"It's really not that much." said. "And I'm happy to do more. All you have to do is ask."

"I wouldn't mind some more grandbables," Mom said, eyeing me and Emily.

"Okay," I said, rolling my eyes.

"What!?" She sald defensively. "I've been waiting a long time for my oldest kids to have some babies! I want more grandbabies before I'm too old to enjoy them!"

"You're forty-five, Mom," I argued. "You've got plenty of time."

She huffed, but I moved on. "Also, I thought you should know that Em's apartment situation isn't working out, so I've asked her to move in here with me for as long as she needs to."

"Can I move in when I start at NYU?" Richie asked.

I turned to Richie, but as I did, I caught sight of my mom watching Emily with a suspicious gleam in her eye, and I made a note to file that away for something to ask my sister about later.

"You don't want to live on campus?" I asked my brother.

"Not when you have a place like this," Richie pointed out, and I couldn't blame him.

"We'll see," I said. "You might want to join a frat or something."

I turned my attention back to everyone. "Look, I don't want cred or anything from you guys. I just want you to know that I'm grateful to have such an amazing family. I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for you guys, and I want you to know that all your needs are gonna be met moving forward. I love you guys a lot."

Mom looked like she was about to cry, and she compressed her lips as she looked at me.

"I don't know how you turned out so well," Dad said, "But we're grateful to have such an amazing son."

"Are you kidding?" I said. "A huge part of that is on you."

The rest of the dinner went smoothly, with more talk about future grandkids, some discussion about the Jacob problem, and speculation about what Richie's first year at college would look like. After dessert, the rest of the family was still talking about Emily's time at NYU and what Richie could expect when I got a call from Erin. I took it outside on the balcony.

"Hey, Erin," I said.

"Hiya, boss," Erin replied.

"You and Vikram having any luck?"

"Well," she said, "Yes and no."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means we don't have a drive, but we have a few places to check. We found references to seven lockboxes that haven't been identified. Two are in New York, one in London, one in Tokyo, two in Prague, and one in Seattle."

"Jesus. So many. How did you find them?"
