Moving To Italy, Episode 3
Uju was wondering how she would be able to stay in a compound without ever going out. She also wondered the kind of job she was going to be doing for Madam Philo. She wondered why she was warned never to step out of the building. She was not happy. Since they arrived at the mansion, she has not seen any of the ladies who were in the bus with her. Everyone was given their own room just like Uju and they were not allowed to interact or to see each other. She has also not seen Madam Philo. Madam Philo had an office at the topmost floor of the mansion and people only see her on rare occasions. She was the madam in charge of the hotel, but she had people running things for her.
She only comes out when there is a problem that her servants cannot handle.
"Where is the woman who brought us here?
Where did she disappear to and where are all the ladies who were in the vehicle with me? I wonder what may have happened to them.
Maybe, they were given their own rooms." Uju said in her heart. She had managed to take her bath in the beautiful bathroom in the apartment. There was a beautiful makeup mirror in the apartment and there were makeup kits. The apartment had many things that Uju liked, but she was holding herself back. She refused to make herself to feel at home yet. It was too early.
"I cannot start enjoying things here because I'm even yet to find out what I'm here to do. This woman said she was taking us to Italy, but suspect that she deceived us. Is this the Italy? I wonder what is going to happen next." Uju said in her heart. The time was already 6pm and Uju have not eaten anything yet.
"I'm so hungry. How can this woman bring us here without giving us food? At the hotel where I was working in Nigeria, at least, I used to get free food three times a day. Why is this one so different? Since we left Nigeria, I have not even tasted water. The woman did not even care to give us snacks. Look at my stomach, so flat like a punctured tire." Uju said to herself while looking into the mirror in the room. There was light everywhere and even though it was night, the room was so lit and bright. Soon, Uju heard a knock at the door. The person entered. It turned out to be the waiter who had earlier welcomed Uju to the hotel. It was the same person who told her the rules and regulation when she arrived.
"Good evening Uju. I'm glad you are making yourself to feel at home already. You look beautiful. Please, always use the makeup kits, they are all yours. It is just as if you know that work is about to start for the day. Well-done, I'm glad you are ready for work. I was just coming to tell you to get ready for work, but I'm glad you are set." The waiter said.
"I'm not ready o! How can I be ready when I have not eating? How can I be ready when I don't even know the type of work I'm going to do? What is the nature of the job? And when exactly am I supposed to resume work? No one is telling anything. I need full information and I need food in my belly. If I don't eat, how do you expect me to work?" Uju asked aggressively. The waiter did not react with the seriousness Uju expected. The waiter understood how Uju was feeling. He knew it was just a matter of time before she would calm down. He has handled a lot of women like her at the hotel.
"Well, don't bother about the job you are going to do. You will soon find out. As for food, you will be given food to eat after you finish working tonight. In Nigeria where you are coming from, do you get fed before you work? You get your salary and food after working. After finishing your job tonight, you will be given a plate of food." The waiter said.
"Where is the work? Let me go and do it so that I will get the food. I'm so hungry. I have not eaten anything since morning. Besides, where is Madam Philo? I want to see her and ask her some questions. I want to ask her why she brought me here after promising to take me to Italy. I want to see her without delay." Uju said with anger. The anger was coming from her hungry belly. The butterflies in her belly were beginning to bite her and she was sad.
"I'm done with you. All I know is that when the job comes, you will know. Forget about Madam Philo, you will not be seeing her regularly. Just focus on your job." The waiter said as he leaves Uju's apartment.
Uju started crying. Her tears were plenty enough to fill a big bucket. She wept for a long time, but there was no one to wipe her tears. She cried so much that her eyes were swollen.
"What have I gotten myself into? Who told me to come to this place? Who sent me? I would have remained in Nigeria to earn my N20,000 monthly with peace of mind. Look at me now, I have not had anything to eat since morning. What kind of life is this for goodness sake? How am I going to leave this place?" Uju asked herself in tears. As she was still talking to herself, she heard a knock on the door. She quickly wiped her tears, stood up and opened the door. Uju came face to face with a tall man who looked old. The old man was with the waiter who had just left Uju's room a while ago. While the old man entered the room, the waiter stayed outside.
"Attend to him. Make sure you treat him well. This man here is a very important customer to the hotel. Madam Philo will not take it lightly with you if this man complains about you. Make sure he is very happy and satisfied." The waiter tells Uju and locks the door.
"What do you mean? don't understand. What do you mean I should attend to him and make him happy?" Uju asked, but the waiter had already locked the door and left. Uju was now alone with the old man.
