The Breadwinner Episode Nine
When John was coming back from his wife's school, he branched off to the restaurant and bought himself a generous portion of fried chicken. He bought a bottle of red wine and also a portion of fried rice. As he was driving home, he was busy whistling in his car as he drove home. In his brain, John was already calculating how he would do justice to the fried chicken, rice and wine. No doubt, he was a happy man. He thinks he has scored many victories and it was time for him to celebrate. Soon, he branched into his street and drove into the compound.
The time was 8:30am when John stepped into the living room. He suddenly remembered that he was told to resume work at the company on that very day. John picked up his phone and called the general manager to excuse himself. Graciously, he was given another one week to put himself together and resume work effectively. With that off his neck, John sat in the living room and played loud music and started eating his chicken.
"By this time yesterday, I never knew I would become rich over night. It is true the saying that no condition is permanent. No one knows tomorrow. Only God has the keys to tomorrow. The people that mocked me yesterday will want to associate with me today because God has turned my ugly situation into a laughter of joy." John said in his heart as he bit off a chunk of chicken meat and chewed it with relish. He was genuinely happy and he thought it was right to celebrate because he had scored many major victories within the past 24 hours.
As John was busy eating and drinking in the living room, his wife stormed the room like a police officer who had come to make an arrest. Her eyes appeared bloodshot like someone who has been crying for a long time. John was alarmed when the door swung open with serious force. He thought thieves were coming to attack him, but was relieved when he saw it was his wife. John already knew why she was tensed. As soon as Miriam entered the room, she went straight to the music player and turned it off. John deliberately said nothing in reply, but continued to eat his chicken as if nothing was happening in the room.
"You wretched fool. You think you can send me out of my job and go scot-free? Let me tell you, I know what you did and you must explain yourself immediately or else, there will be concequences. Idle fool who has no job. All you do is sit and eat free food. Shameless she-goat that calls himself a man. Start talking now before my anger descends on your head like thunder." Miriam said. Up to that moment, she still doesn't know that John got his job back and she was not aware that there was so much money in his bank account. She was still busy calling him a jobless man. John said nothing, but was just busy eating chicken bones in a way that made Miriam to be more irritated.
"I said you should start talking. You wrote a resignation letter for me and submitted it at my work place without my approval. Are you out your mind? Have lost it? The fact that you don't have money, has it made you mad? How can you resign my job for me? Is it your job? Did you get the job for me? So you want me to be jobless like you so that will be staying idle like you? Your plan will not work because you are going to go back to my proprietor and let him know that the whole plan was executed by you without my approval. If you don't do that this moment, this house will not contain the two of us." Miriam said. She was shouting and barking like a dangerous dog, but John paid her no attention. He drank his wine, ate fried rice and chicken as if no one else was in the living room. This was very painful for Miriam because she expected him to react.
"You fool! I'm talking and you busy eating. Don't you know that it is my job that has been feeding you for the past ten months when you were idle? I'm sure that it was even my money that you used to buy this food and wine. You are eating it happily, but you had the guts to resign me from my job. The job that has been feeding you. John, it's today you will see real madness. I'm going to show you the real stuff I'm made off." Miriam was beginning to lose her senses because the fact that John was not saying anything got her even more enraged. She moved fast and close to where John was sitting and slapped him.
"You think I'm joking? I told you that I will show my true colour this morning if you don't explain to me why you wrote that evil letter to resign my job. You must answer me immediately or be prepared for fire." Miriam said in a fist of anger. What was surprising to her was that John still didn't say a word after the slap. He also didn't retaliate. He just paused for a while and then started eating his food again.
Miriam then took the wine in the glass cup and poured it on John's face angrily, hoping that he would react or say something, but John refused to say a word. Miriam then pushed everything on the table to the floor, scattering the rice, chicken and the bottle of wine. The bottle broke into pieces. Miriam picked one part of the jagged bottles and held it to John's face.
"Start talking." Miriam said. But John was still silent. There was a knock at the door which kind of eased the tensed moment. Miriam went to open the door. She saw a beautiful young woman who walked into the room even before Miriam could ask questions.
"My love, what is happening? Are you okay? Why is the room scattered?" The lady asked John who stood up to hug her. They also kissed. Miriam was shocked.
"Young lady who are you and why are you kissing my husband in my presence?" Miriam asked.
"I'm Nneka. They have told me a lot about you, but I'm here to put you where you belong." Nneka responded with no iota of fear as she took John and they left the room, leaving Miriam in shock.
