-------%%%-------

ZACHARY'S POV

-------%%%-------

After I got pushed out of Dalanie's house, the first thing I did was go to the park where we first got to properly know each other.

I plucked a bunch of leaves (since there were no flowers in the winter) and sat on the same bench that Dal and I sat on last time.

"She likes me, she hates me, she likes me, she hates me..."

I know, you might be judging me now and what I'm doing now is pretty weird for a guy.

But, she's the one! I know it! I feel it! I've never had a girlfriend (I know you probably can't believe it) because girls are just my play toys.

Girls are boy's toys anyway. If not, what or who would be our toys?

Dal however... I don't think she should be a toy to anyone. Not to my brothers (Alex, Kael and Damon), not to me!

"It seems like I need to do something, right? But..." I muttered as I picked the last leaf. "She hates me..."

DAMN RIGHT SHE HATES ME!!!

I shouldn't be so cocky, but that's just how I am!

"Arghhh," I groaned loudly, messing my hair roughly then burying my face in my hands.

No one can help me.

But life goes on, doesn't it?

Unless I do something...

I whipped out my phone and speedily called Alexander.

"Alex, I need you to help me. So tomorrow at school, tell Dalanie that from next week onwards, I'll be going to your school..."

BACK TO DALANIE'S POV

-----------------%%%-----------------

"Wow, she really is flirting with a dude," Alex said, the both of us spying on her through the window.

"Told you so! I know her like you don't!" I winked.

"Okay, okay. Come on, let's get ready for class. Did you do the geography homework that Mrs Mullins assigned?" he asked as we walked down the hall.

"What?! She assigned us some homework?!"

Alex poked a tongue out. "Chillax, I didn't do it either."

"Am I supposed to be reassured?" I rolled my eyes.

"Definitely," he said, flipping his streaks of dark purple bangs and walking off. "Catch ya in class," he winked.

That wink... it sparked something in my heart at that moment. But after a while, it was gone.

"Never mind about that, I gotta get to class!" I came to the sudden realization that I was gonna be late.

Grabbing my books from my locker, I raced with time to get to class.

"Wait up!" I heard a girl shout. Turning around, I saw an Alexa running towards me, frantically swinging her arms.

"Oh hey Alexa, sorry but I have to rush to class now," I said apologetically.

"No," she grabbed my arm fiercely and spun me around, then started to run and I had to follow suit. My books fell out of my hands but she didn't give me time to pick them up.

"Alexa, wait! What's going on?"

"I'll explain later, for now you gotta come. And do me a favour now. Call Alex and Kristen."

"But they're in class. How do I..."

"Just do it! This is urgent!"

"Okay, okay," I agreed reluctantly and fished my phone from my coat pocket as Alexa pulled me out of the school building.

"Quick, get in," she said, shoving me into a bright red sports car.

"Kristen and Alex are coming down."

"Right, lemme start this thing up first."

The engine roared and it was so loud, some students from the classrooms peered down at us from the windows.

"Woah, sis! What's going on? Where are we going?" Alex appeared by the car with Kristen.

"Hop in, guys. I'll tell you on the way."

The two got in and she immediately sped out of the school gates and almost knocked into the security guard if not for the skillful swerve.

On the highway, Alexa sighed heavily. "Sorry for cutting your classes, guys. But this is serious.

Nobody said anything, and there was an awkward silence between the four of us.

"It's like this..." Alexa's voice trailed off, her eyes started to water and her lips starting to quiver.

Something was wrong. "It's okay, just continue," I placed a hand on Alexa's shoulder.

She was shaking but managed to find her voice. "The boys..."

Everyone gulped.

"They were involved in a car accident."

"WHAT?! WHEN?!" I shrieked in utter disbelief. Kristen started sinking back into her seat, pale-faced. Alex sat up in shock and shook his head vigorously, not wanting to listen anymore.

"I know it's hard to believe. They're in the State Hospital now. I think Kael broke his neck and a leg. Damon broke his arm and ribcage."

"What about... Zachary...?" I asked, my voice barely heard.

"He..." Alexa didn't seem to want to continue.

"He didn't... did he?" Kristen whispered. She too was starting to break down.

"Luckily, no, he didn't. But he fell into a coma. No one - not even the doctors know when he will ever wake up. It could be tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, or maybe even ten years later!"

After hearing this, my whole world came crashing down.

I started to reflect on the things that had happened when we were together and he was still conscious.

Lost in thought, I didn't even realise when we arrived at the hospital.

The four of us immediately dashed to the reception after Alexa parked the car.

"Nurse!" Alex shouted, frowning and slamming his fist on the reception counter.

Everyone present turned to look at us. We all didn't care.

"Zachary Huxley. Kael Cambern. Damon Watten. Room numbers. NOW!" he looked at the nurse in the eye, daring her to calm him down.

Luckily, she was professional enough and quickly searched for the boys' names and told us their room numbers.

"Mr Huxley, Room 346. Mr Cambern, Room 547. Mr Watten, Room 691. Guest lifts are down the hall to the right."

Alex didn't even thank the nurse; he just grabbed us all and sped towards the lifts.

I shouted a 'Thank you!' to the nurse and saw her smile back.

"Hurry up, you stupid lifts!" Alex tapped his foot impatiently.

I'd never seen this side of him before. I sensed that he was always a very passive person, even though I wasn't his friend last time.

Ding!

The lift doors opened but it was too slow for Alex so he pushed the two sides of the door open with all his strength.

"Get in, girls," he said to us patiently.

Oh the irony.

Kristen pressed the buttons to level 3, 5 and 6.

"Alexander, you go to level 5. Alexa, you go to level 6. Dalanie and I will go to level 3. At the end of the day, make sure you been to everyone's rooms at least once."

The twins and I nodded.

Ding! "Level 3!"

"C'mon! We've got no time to waste!" Kris grabbed me and we ran to look for Room 346.

"Here!" I pointed to a wooden door that had a plague on it saying 'Room 346'.

We pushed the door open and the smell of medicine overwhelmed us. It took us a while to take in the sight.

"Z...Zachary..." I muttered as I walked closer to his bed.

A woman and a man were sitting near the window. The woman was crying her eyes out and the man looked depressed but was comforting the woman.

As we neared them, they looked up at Kristen and I.

The couple got up and extended a hand to shake ours.

"You must be Dalanie and Kristen," the woman said in between sobs.

I nodded and smiled slightly. "And you might be...?"

"Oh how rude! I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Zachary's mother. My name is Jessa Rosenfield, but you can call me Mrs Huxley."

"Nice to meet you, Mrs Huxley." I managed a small sympathizing smile. Kris followed suit.

"You must be Mr Huxley then," Kristen said, and we both turned to him.

"Yes, I am. Nice to meet you girls."

"Nice to meet you too, Mr Huxley!"

"I'm going to get a cup of coffee. Does anyone want one?" Mr Huxley got up and asked.

"I could use one," I said shyly, getting up too.

"It's okay, I'll get it for you. My treat," he smiled weakly.

"Oh... thank you!"

As soon as he left, Mrs Huxley asked us what we wanted to know.

"Uh... how did this happen?" Kristen asked cautiously.

Mrs Huxley took a deep breath and sighed. "They went out of the school during their one hour break. They were heading to the next town - it's only a few kilometers away. Suddenly, a car sped towards them and the driver of that car spun out of control. Zac was driving at that time, and he tried to avoid the car. It was too late though; the other car was going too fast."

I looked at her, mortified.

"Then they collided into each other. Zac's car flipped over twice and hit a lamp post."

"That's horrible! Where is that driver now?" Kris clenched her fists.

"Kris," I whispered. "Sit down!"

"He ended up with only a few scratches and bruises. Unfair, right? Furthermore, it was his fault that he was speeding."

"I'm gonna find him," Kristen got really mad and shot up from her seat.

"Kristen! Calm down!" I yelled.

"The police are undergoing investigations. I hope the man will take responsibility for what he has done," said Mrs Huxley.

Kristen sat back down.

"Yes, we hope justifiable actions will be taken," I nodded in agreement.

"I'm back. Here's your coffee, Dalanie," Mr Huxley's voice was heard.

"Thank you," I said with gratitude.

Then, there was a knock on the door.

"Hey girls, want to go see Kael? He's awake and feeling alright enough to talk."

We spun around to see Alex looking at us.

"Yeah, okay. Level 5, right?" I asked.

"Yep."

"Cool, we'll go there now," I nodded and smiled. Kris and I turned to Mr and Mrs Huxley, then thanked them. They acknowledged our greeting and went out of the room.

"I hope Zachary gets well soon," Kristen said while we were in the lift.

I nodded plainly.

Ding! "Level 5!"

We stepped out of the lift and found Kael's room directly in front of us.

"Hey Kael," I opened the door slightly after knocking.

All I could see was Kael's bandages and casts.

"Kael..." Kristen breathed.

"Yo girls."

"Sup."

And for the next few minutes of our time, we just stared at each other. Finally, he broke the silence. "Guess we can't go for our snowboarding competition anymore, huh?"

"It's okay, you still have next year. And the year after that. And the year after after that," I tried my best to console him.

"Where are your parents?" Kristen looked around the room.

"Overseas. They went on a business trip. I made everyone who wanted to inform them of what happened promise that they wouldn't."

"But why?"

"Hmm," he sighed. They must be really busy with meetings and stuff at this point. I don't want to bother them."

For a bad boy, he's really filial.

"Say..." I smirked. "Aren't you supposed to be a bad boy?"

Kael laughed and nodded. "That's just an image. Not many know how my 'brothers' or me are actually like."

"That's great," I smiled encouragingly. "But your parents are your parents. No matter what happens, you'll always be priority."

"Exactly why I don't want to tell them."

"This isn't a matter where you just fell and scraped your knees, Kael," Kristen pointed out and I agreed.

"Who have you visited?" Kael asked, obviously changing the topic.

"Zachary and you only."

"Hahaha, guess you should go see Damon then."

"You sure you'll be alright alone?"

"Of course, I'll be fine," he said and grinned.

Kristen shot him a look of worry. He smiled back reassuringly and gave her a wink.

She nodded, blushing and spinning around. I saw her face light up as if she was in heaven.

Oh, geez. I've a feeling.

"C'mon, we gotta go see Damon now," I tugged on her arm.

"Uh...? Huh..."

I rolled my eyes and pulled her out the door, but not before bidding Kael a goodbye.

We got into the lift and went up to see Damon.
