A student is stabbed to death in the street. Maigret and Cavre disagree over the killer’s motives. As the investigations proceed in different directions, Maigret digs into the killer’s psychology and tries to provoke him into making contact. But his priorities suddenly shift when Countess Sophie calls to say that she fears for her life. Maigret is left facing an impossible decision.
