UNILAG Senate elects Prof. Matthew Olusoji Ilori as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics & Research)
The Senate of the University of Lagos has elected Prof. Matthew Olusoji Ilori, FAS as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics & Research).
Prof. Ilori succeeds Professor Bolanle Oboh, whose tenure in the position ended earlier this week. His appointment marks another milestone in a distinguished academic and administrative career within the institution.
Before his election, Prof. Ilori served as the immediate Past Director of the Academic Planning Unit. He obtained his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Lagos in 1998 and has since built a reputation as a leading scholar in his field.
Over the years, he has received numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, including the UNESCO Fellowship in Biotechnology, Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship, Royal Society Fellowship, Fulbright Research Fellowship, and the DAAD International Deans’ Course Fellowship.
Prof. Ilori has also secured significant research grants valued in millions of Naira, Dollars, and Pounds from notable organisations such as TETFund, Lagos State Research and Innovation Council, the UNILAG Central Research Committee, and Aston University, among others.
An accomplished academic, he has authored a total of 178 publications, including 125 journal articles, 3 books, and 50 conference papers. He has also supervised 17 PhD candidates, contributing significantly to the development of future scholars.
In addition to his research achievements, Prof. Ilori has held several key administrative positions. He is a member of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos and previously served as Director of the Institute of Maritime Studies. His past roles also include Dean of the Faculty of Science, Director of the Centre for General Studies, and Acting Head of the Department of Microbiology.
The university community and well-wishers have extended their congratulations to Prof. Ilori, expressing confidence in his ability to excel in his new role. They also prayed for grace, strength, and wisdom for him as he takes on the responsibilities of advancing academic excellence and research development at the university.
