NELFUND extends Student Loan application deadline

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced an extension of the application period for its student loan scheme, citing a massive increase in awareness and applications resulting from its ongoing nationwide sensitization campaign.

The decision comes after a reminder notice issued last week stated that the portal would close on February 27, 2026. However, in response to widespread feedback from students and key stakeholders, as well as a surge in applications and inquiries, the Fund has approved additional days for submissions. This extension is intended to ensure that all eligible students have ample opportunity to complete their applications pending further management decisions and communications.

According to a statement released by the Fund, the extension is particularly aimed at accommodating:

· Students who need more time to finalize their applications.

· Prospective applicants who only recently learned about the scheme through sensitization engagements.

· Institutions that are just commencing their 2025/2026 academic session.

· Institutions that have yet to submit their verified student lists.

Commenting on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerre, emphasized the Fund’s commitment to inclusivity.

“Our sensitization efforts across the six geopolitical zones have significantly increased awareness and participation. Therefore, in line with our mandate to expand access to tertiary education financing, we have approved an extension to ensure that all eligible students have a fair and equal opportunity to apply,” Sawyerre said.

NELFUND also clarified that institutions which have not yet begun the 2025/2026 academic session must submit an official request for an extension, accompanied by their approved academic calendar, for consideration.

Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this window to complete their applications via the official NELFUND portal before it eventually closes.

The Fund reiterated its dedication to transparency, accountability, and providing sustainable financing solutions to remove financial barriers to higher education in Nigeria.
