Armed robbers sentenced to death by hanging, others receive life imprisonment in Bauchi

Two armed robbers in Bauchi have been sentenced to death by hanging for offences including rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, conspiracy and culpable homicide, while seven others received life imprisonment.

The High Court of Bauchi State delivered the judgments on Friday whine 51 criminal cases involving 64 defendants were adjudicated and concluded during the last quarter of 2025.

The offences ranged from armed robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy, culpable homicide, rape, and fraud, among others.

The convictions were secured under relevant provisions of the Penal Code and the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as well as the Bauchi State Penal Code, 2022.

Muhammad Maina and Yakubu Adamu were the two armed robbers sentenced to death.

Evidence presented by the prosecution proved their involvement in violent robbery incidents across the state, warranting the maximum penalty under the law as held by the court.

Shehu Isa, Adamu Adamu (aka Nalele), Mohammed Bello, Kabiru Ahmed, Muhammad Jibrin (aka Al-Amin), Usman Bello (Maigamo) were sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of fine. and Manu Umaru (aka Alhaji Manu) were sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of fine.

They were convicted for offences including rape, conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide, and kidnapping.

A statement issued by the information officer of the Bauchi State Judicial Service Commission, Saleh Umar, 11 individuals were also convicted for fraud-related offences and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment without the option of fine.

They include Abubakar Shehu, Yusuf Aliyu Alhassan, Miracle Chidi, Dominic Lazarus, James Myaulompwa, Lawus Zakka, Sadiq Dosumo, Jude Titus, Joseph Olamide Adesunmila, Koche Samuel, and Falour Odinaka.

Other convicts received various prison terms ranging from three months to ten years, with some given the option of fines ranging between N10,000 and N500,000, depending on the gravity of the offence.

The judgments were delivered after the court found the defendants guilty beyond reasonable doubt at the conclusion of their trials.

In their rulings, according to the statement, the court expressed concern over the persistent threat of kidnapping and violent crimes in Bauchi State, stressing that the sentences were intended to serve as a deterrent to criminal activities.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Bauchi State Judiciary to uphold justice and support efforts by the state government to combat crime and enhance public safety.
