AFCON 2025: Frank Onyeka reveals how Chelle picked Super Eagles penalty takers

Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka, has revealed how the penalty takers within the team were selected during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria fell short against DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup playoff.

Eric Chelle’s men also lost to Morocco in the AFCON semi-final via spot-kicks.

However, there was a respite, as the Eagles beat Egypt via penalties in the third-place playoff.

“I’ve never kicked one in my life. They don’t pick me, but I also try not to involve myself,” Onyeka said in an interview with Oma Akatugba.

“However, it’s something I need to work on, because I need to trust myself when another opportunity comes.

“Sometimes, the coach asks who wants to take, and other times, he makes the decision, and if you’re not feeling up to it, you can opt out, but most times, the players choose.”
